Any good JRPG's other than FF?

I mean I'm a fanboy, and I have a hard time getting other Rpg's cause I think they will be as good on multiple levels like FF, music, graphics, story, and gameplay.

But today, all I see is WRPG's which have no story worth mentioning, and Jrpg's with guns as primary.

I want an RPG for ps3 witthout guns being main elemt of battle, a good story, and music.

    Is this so hard?

Okay, let's see. I was thinking about Star ocean but the reviews aren't the greatest.
Mass effect 2, yea right. It is everything I just went against. Wrpg, Guns, confusing unperfected story...

    ANything?
    HELP!
I just spent 60$ on Resident Evil 5 gold edition and castlevania lords of shadows, which I despise action games...>.>
There were no Rpg's i was trusting and FF13, I already beat it once before my profile got bugged, or at least the trophies did.

Nostalgia and Radiant Historia on DS are decent. Kingdom Hearts of course.
Chrono Trigger,Seiken Densetsu are even better games. (Well personally i like Kingdom Hearts the most of those mentioned but that's just me).
Grandia is also one of the better jrpg i know, alot of games, you just need to search for the classics, they are the best in my opinion.
    Especially ps1 and ps2 games.

Re: Any good JRPG's other than FF?

The thing is with the PS3 there aren't many JRPGs to begin with let alone good ones or JRPGs with your criteria.

Resonance of Fate has guns which you didn't want & the story hasn't been lauded as being great.

There is Demon Souls from Atlus but that plays more like a WRPG where you make a character and go from there. Valkyria Chronicles is pretty good from what I've heard but it does have guns, though it is more of an alternate history type game taking place in 1940's Europe with different names. You may want to check out Eternal Sonata. I don't know a lot about the game but it has been received well so that is a starting point.

I would suggest Nier even though its reviews have been mediocre the game has establish a fan base, perhaps a cult-hit. It's not about the graphics, it features many different styles of gameplay which it does adequately but the story and music - definitely the music - has been well received by those who've played.

3D Dot Game Heroes is for those wanting an old-school type RPG. The 3D dots give the game a 3D pixel look.

As for Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the story isn't good, but the combat makes up for that as is the usual case for Star Ocean games - gameplay takes precedence over story. The music isn't bad from the small amount I've heard, battle theme is definitely good. I would suggest at least renting this game.

Before I forget you may want to check out Disgaea 3. Strategy RPG game with plenty of humor.

Other than that, though some may add another title or two, there isn't much in the way of JRPGs fitting your criteria. The next "big" titles for the PS3 JRPG genre are: Final Fantasy XIII-2, Tales of Graces F, & Tales of Xillia though that last one is some time off.

If all else fails, download Xenogears or Vagrant Story through PSN.

    Main series FFs Beaten - FF: 4x, FFII: 3x, FFIII: 3x, FFIV: 3x, FFV: 3x, FFVI: 4x, FFVII: 5x, FFVIII: 5x, FFIX: 3x, FFX: 4x, FFXII: 3x, FFXIII: 2x, FFXV: 2x

Re: Any good JRPG's other than FF?

I highly recommend Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Made by Squeenix. It's more action orientated than Final Fantasy. It's also got an awesome story and great characters. Graphics are also beautiful. But yeah, I definitely recommend this.

Also, even though you said you dont want guns as the focal point in combat, but I must recommend Valkyria Chronicles. It is one hell of a strategy RPG.

Re: Any good JRPG's other than FF?

The Last Hope isn't made by S-E. It's only published by them. Tri-ACE would be the game's developer. Sorry, but I always tend to correct that mistake.

And I recommend TLH as well. I had a lot of fun playing that game, despite its negative reputation.

Re: Any good JRPG's other than FF?

I enjoyed the old Phantasy Star games on Sega Master system and Genesis.
If you can get your hands on Sonic's ultimate genesis collection, Then they should be on it.

Shining Force- legacy of great intention(Simply titled "Shining Force" is also on said collection. It and it's sequel Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal(Agains imply titled "Shining Force II" are both great RPGs. As is the Prequel\Sequel Shining in the Darkness. This it's a totally different kind of games. More like a First person dungeon crawl with random battles.
In both games you have around 20 characters to pick from, And if you don't mind a little strategy. I highly reccomend them

    As for PS3's RPG list.

    I can't really help you outside of those as I don't have a PS3.

Persona (Series) by ATLUS, made in Japan originally, its amazing and is addicting, haha. thats all I can think of.
    Final Fantasy games played:1,2,3,6,7,9,10,12,13
    Final Fantasy games beaten:7,10,13

I really didnt get too much into 1-3, I got about halfway through 6, didnt play 9 that much, and played 12 at a friends house.

Xenogears, Xenogears, Xenogears, Xenogears, and Xenogears.

Yes, I like Xenogears, and would recommend it to anyone or anything, even a turtle. Xenogears is that good.

Actually, I'm rather biased. Xenogears is a pretty niche title. The battle system is very accessible, but the story is hardly friendly to those not used to JRPG convolution. I personally think it to be the greatest game ever made, but you may differ in your opinion. Outside of that, I'm personally fond of Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, Brave Fencer Musashi (I liked it so much I named myself after it!), Parasite Eve, Xenosaga, and if I'm feeling particularly saucy, Ogre Battle tickles me. The most openly accessible game in that list is Parasite Eve, so it's a definite good first stop.

Guys, stop talking about emulators. It's against the rules. See? You will be destroyed if you continue discussing such things. And by "guys" I guess I mean primarily Odin-O. I will be removing said things from your posts.

Xenogears is coming to the PSN, or already is there. You can purchase it there. You can also purchase at least Grandia 1 there. Also, you can get the Shining Force games Calvan mentioned on the Sonic Genesis Collection disk. Anyhoo...

I played and passed Phantasy Star Universe a long time ago. Real-time battles and a decent storyline. I recommend that if you haven't played it already.

Re: Any good JRPG's other than FF?

Dragon Age isn't bad. From what I've played, the story is pretty good but some of it gets lost [for me] when in dungeon like areas or doing side quests. The characters make the entire game interesting with the relationships you can (or can't) build with them, and their relationships with each other. It's not linear, but it's not exactly sandbox either.

I'd totally recommend Nier. It looks like it should be a PS2 game, but don't let that put you off. It's got a really good story, it's packed full of side quests to keep things interesting, and is full of likeable characters. The music is phenomenal, and if you wish, it's one of the few games that supports you being able to play your own music from the xmb when you play. So long grinding sessions in Nier + Disturbed = Awesome.

There is White Knight Chronicles, but the story is shot full of plot holes. The only characters I liked in it was myself and a guy called Caesar. Despite that, it is a lot of fun to play through. Online is pretty fun too if you have a couple of friends playing, as some of the quests are impossible to solo.

    Other than that... that's it.

Oh my god I can't believe I forgot about Nier. It's my favourite as well.

Yeah deifinitely Nier. The soundtrack is nothing short of beautiful. Easily my favourite soundtrack ever. Story is amazing too.
