After reading about the game (which is going to be released later this year) I came across an section which mentioned Metro 2033 the book. Along with it's sequel Metro 2034. I've been reading articles about this post-apocalyptic Russian cyber-novel ever since. Both online, an off. I must say, I'm intrigued. From what I've gathered it sounds very good indeed. It takes place in a nuclear war inflicted, Russian dystopia and orientates around the survival of man. Or, to be more precise, the survival of the people living within Russia's underground metro stations. The concept follows a similar theme to Fallouts apocalypse. Human-hunting mutants are born from the ashes of our dead civilization. These are aptly names "Homo-Novus" or "New-Man". These mutants, needless to say, seem to be the main threat to mankind. Therefor centering the limitless struggle mankind would face to exist. However, the struggle is not limited to these creatures alone. It would seem that the surviving citizen also face trouble within their own ranks. Political and religious fascists also rear their ugly head. This gives the groups of each Metro station their own standpoint. Some uniting themselves with their respective colonists, some politically controlling them. All in all it makes to be an interesting read. While not a new read in Russia; an English text version is to be released in the near future.
The writer, Dmitry Glukhovsky, wrote the book online at the age of 17. I'd imagine it was a set-up not so different to some of out own writers in that respect. It was only when he re-released the tale on his own website that it became a Russian phenomenon. Boasting 2 million online fans, with over half a million sold in cover version it's hard not to expect something of the English release.
I wish I could say more about it but that's all I know. Hence the subject.
Has anybody seen/ heard anything about this book that may further push me to buy it?
Is anybody interested in looking it up themselves?
