No problem The name I used to go by was Sir David, I think there was a name change somewhere in between these two names but I've no idea.

Now that I think about it... I think it was you that recommended Agalloch to me. You seemed really familiar before. Dante (also recommended a lot of good bands to me before) told me you had a name change, so it might've been back then. Anyway, thanks for that and Agalloch are amazing.Originally Posted by Heimdall

I could have sword I posted earlier, that is quite weird
I need to get Slough Feg's other album, I have Down Among Deadmen which is quite spectacular I might add. Is Twilight similar?
Empyrium is also good stuff, if you like them Tenhi is also kind of similar but it's just pure Folkish.
Still haven't caught onto Agalloch yet but I am finding them to be alright.
Right now I am going through a Windir phase and I am pretty sure you will like them Daisy. Also as I said in your Korpilaani thread you might like Ensiferum if you haven't heard them then may I suggest the song "Lai Lai Hei", I can send it over MSN if you wish.
Right now I am listening to Leviathan's A Silhouettes In Splinters EP which is ok but I quite liked Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide, if you like Xasthur you will probably like them.
Someone should buy me the Agalloch demo that is on ebay since I'm such a dedicated Agalloch fan with absolutely no funds.

Thanks for that Winter, I believe you recommended Windir before... but my playlist says otherwise. Maybe I looked and was unable to find any... Hmm... Well, I'll check it later again, methinks. It's about time I got some new shit.
Heimdall, ah, no money? I ran into a bit of money lately, but it's gone now. Damn.

Yeah, don't rush getting into them. It took me a year of casual listening to them to really "get" them.Still haven't caught onto Agalloch yet but I am finding them to be alright.
Ah yes, Leviathan is fantastic. Have you listened to Lurker of Chalice? What the ****...?
It took you guys time to get into Agalloch?
I heard "You Were But A Ghost In My Arms", and decided I was in love them, proceeding to collect more of their tracks over time.
Tenhi have some good shit, Winter, you got me into them although they're very hard to find. Maybe my searches just suck or something. Hmm.
Nest are hard to find as well. Dante and this other guy I knew got me into them, but I was only ever able to find a few tracks.
That's the only thing I dislike about stores, is that it's impossible to find a lot of types of metal. They tend to stick to "nu-metal" and have a limited supply of heavier shit... It's not that I won't listen to nu-metal at all just because they aren't as hard, but there reaches a point where you think "I've heard all of this. It's time to get more varied".
A lot of nu-metal sounds false anyway. Little boys trying to be tough in a lot of cases.
Music shops need to progress with the generation, dammit.

If you can order online I'd suggest trying out The End Records mailorder (shopping.theendrecords.com) or Newburycomics.com both are very cheap and have a great selection. I just recently bought 7 cds on Newbury's site for under 65 dollars.

Not bad!
I usually don't order from the Internet, though. It's not that I don't trust them with my card number, it's more the fact that I have no money on my card. Oops?
It'd probably cost more for me, living in Britain and all the postage and stuff. I'll check it out, though, for future reference. Or whenever I'm actually willing to get a job that actually pays me more than shit.

Anyway. Who's into Nile? (Black Metal? I dunno...) I know Leviathan is big into them, but he's pretty inactive since he got himself a life.
Ven'Gyr listens to them, too, I think?
Marduk are good as well. Except I don't think I've ever met anybody else who actually listens to them.

Nile is a Death Metal band, and a pretty fucking great one aswell.
If you like Death, check them out.
I already have a load of their shit.
I enjoy it, but like Children Of Bodom I can't listen to them for days on end. It's a one day thing, then a loooong break, then another day of them.
And for the record, Nile's best track is Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten.
One of my favourite tracks of that genre, in fact. I used to be a little more into death and black. I seem to have mellowed out into progressive, it would seem, but death and black is always good to get the adreneline pumping.

I'm into their shit even though I primarily listen to Black Metal and it's subgenres, Doom Metal, Thrash and Speed Metal. I have 4 of their albums and I pretty much like them all.
METAL UBER ALLES!!!! \m/ \m/
I can't stand Nile, they are too much of a gimmick band and don't back it up with interest music.
Try out Lykathea Aflame for better "brutal death" with a Middle Eastern theme (musically not lyrically.) They actually have really cool uplifting guitar work and "spiritual" lyrics.

Sound-wise, those two genres are the same to me.
The Egyptian theme is what I like so much about this band, I think. Even if it's not really heard throughout the music apart from lyrically, it's just a theme I've always been keen on.Originally Posted by Heimdall

It's good to be outside of the ring, although it'd be nice to have something cool in Britain...

Well basically, Death is more fast paced than most Black Metal. Granted many BM bands sounds somwhat like Death but look at it this way.
BM is different, some is fast paced other is more Doomish (slower paced but more musical). Doom (what I've heard) is slower than both BM and Death so if you picture BM as a "mix" between Death and Doom it might help..
^Crappy explanation, I know. I hate explaining stuff.
But I experience Death as a straight fast paced music genre (yes I know it varies) but most of it is mostly about blasting out like a nuclear explotion while Black Metal tend to be more symphonic like Classical.
^Better explained?
Death and black = similar.
Progressive and doom = similiar.
I think I get what you're saying, but I still doubt I'd be able to tell shit apart just by hearing it.

I really wouldn't go with saying any of the genres are "similar."Originally Posted by Chez Daja
Death and black are sister genres yes, but death metal is more of a rhythmically complex genre where as black metal is more based upon atmosphere through simplicity.
Doom is most similar to heavy metal actually, and in some cases death and black. It is quite possibly one of the most far removed styles from prog metal, which is most closely related to power I find.
I'm really bad at describing the actual quality that the music possesses in "technical" terms though.
www.myspace.com/lykatheaaflame to hear some of their music.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v52/CrushedHopeMWW/bece6c58.gif"
Genre's are important for understanding the basis of music and they are put into sub-genre's so you have a fair idea, it's annoying when people tag something incorrectly like say I am looking for some Black Metal, so somebody say's check out CoB so you do but when you listen to it, its like "What the fvck? This isn't Black Metal!". Here's how I would describe them:
Black: Really raw, simply riff's most of the time but some of the melodic stuff can get fairly techincal (Dissection), a lot of blast beats, occasionally use of synths (OMC & Barad Dur) but a lot of the time just basic instruments (Beatrik does this and still sounds amazing). Very Atmosphere, does not always have to be about "satan" and "kvlts" as some would have you think. Mostly has raw growls or scretches but in some cases such as Hate Forest uses Death Vox. Most people say it started with Venom but I disagree as all the did was coin the term, it really started with Bathory, Von, Mortuary Drape, Mercyful Fate & Burzum/Mayhem (Varg's sound was similar on the Uruk Hai demos to his works as Burzum).
Death: Quite well known for its brutality, has deep vocals, not often as fast as BM but can be. Technical drum, often has guitar solos, some bass while not always. I find most DM lacks much atmosphere in most cases but it makes up for it in it's heavier sound I feel. I can really say where it started from but my presumption would be bands like Morbid Angel and Possessed.
Doom: Often very slow droning, deep guitars, more atmospheric than Doom Metal, some bands like Nortt are a good example. Don't really notice the drums and hardly the bass, very long songs pretty much most of them are over 10minutes. Vocals are sometimes Deep growls whilst others tend to be more clean. And as Heimdell said, closely related to Heavy Metal, I believe started with Black Sabbath though I think Gaap can confirmed that.
Power: One of the most technical forms of Metal, often full over excessive chessy riff's, high pitchs vocals, intense drumming and that running bass kind of sound. Most of it is incredibly cheesy and often focuses to much of sounding very technical. The Vocals tend to focus on Medi-eval Europe and fantasy ie Blind Guardian sings about stuff like Lord of the Rings. Some of it is quite good though like Demons & Wizards (Blind Guardian Vocalist with Iced Earths Guitarist) whilst others is highly overrated (Dragonforce, from what I've heard), I would say it started with Iron Maiden.
Viking/Folk: Pretty much my favourite, probably the easiest way to describe it is "as the line between Power Metal and Viking Metal". It tends to have the Melody of PM except I feel it has a better structure, has the same Atmosphere as BM except tends to go for more of an Medi-evil feeling rather than a Dark (Though both work well). Some of the more folkish stuff uses folk instruments like Cruachan who uses real Celtic guitars and the Viking stuff often uses Horns and the like. Tends to have Epic vocals which switch between Rough screams and Clean Vocals. Pretty much started with Bathory and Falkenbach imo.
I hope that helps, this is how I see it so some may see differently but that should be accurate enough.
Thanks, guys, that helps me a little more!
Let's see...
Anybody else listen to Cryptopsy? The lyrics don't even sound like lyrics... Just some really ****ing angry guy breathing into a microphone. Not bad in the sense of music, riffs are catchy... Hmm.
Also, Dark Tranquility? They have some good stuff.

Cryptopsy is the shit. Even though Lord Worm is kind of a pisspoor vocalist (he sounds like a dog barking at the mail truck), their guitar work is pretty intense and Flo Mounier is one of the sickest drummers I've ever heard. It's a shame Mike DiSalvo wasn't able to stick with them as a vocalist, because his growl is so much better than Lord Worm's.
Whoa, this is the first time I've ever heard anyone dislike Lord Word and prefer DiSalvo to him. Lord Worm's vocals are great imo, and are really the only good thing about the band (as a whole, Flo is a fantastic drummer and the bassist is good but that is individually and not when combined with the rest of the band.)Originally Posted by Musashiden

Meh, in "The Pestilence That Walketh in Darkness", I like the spoken word bit Lord Worm does, because it's in sync with the rythym and just plain sounds evil, when he growls it just sounds weird. It's almost always out of rythym and to me sounds like a dog barking more than a typical growl.
Never heard Cryptopsy though I've seen them mentioned quite a bit.
I have The Gallery from Dark Tranquility which is quite good, I've had it for years now but it was one of the early bands I listened to. I heard their newer song which I thought kind of sucked but The Gallery was quite good, kind of like Romantic Melo-Death I guess.
For a second I thought you mentioned Lord Wind which though it isn't exactly Metal is still great stuff, any word on the new album? I heard it's around but I haven't seen it.
Indeed, Doom metal is much more similar to traditional heavy metal than it is to progressive metal. Bands like Black Sabbath and Pentagram who are some of the first proto-metal bands could easily be fitted into the doom category (Well when Deathrow turned into the reincarnation of Pentagram they did become a doom band) and lots of bands like Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar, and to a lesser extent also Cirith Ungol definitely blurred the lines between heavy metal and doom.
Winter, I wouldn't say that Nortt is a very good example of doom metal though. In fact, I always considered him a bit of a funeral doom/bm cross over. Pentagram would probably the closest thing you can come to THE sound of doom metal. I don't think that there's any other doom metal band who's been so influential on the genre. And I doubt that there are many doom metal bands that hasn't done a Pentagram cover at some point in their carreer haha.
"One should forgive one's enemies, but not before they are hanged." - Heinrich Heine
Morbid Angel is a good example of early death metal, Possessed is more thrash metal but has some death metal qualities. Other early death metal bands include: DEATH, Vader, Bolt Thrower, Sepultura (debatable).Originally Posted by Wintermetal
And while the following bands aren't death metal, many do think they've paved the way: Mercyful Fate (you can't go wrong with King Diamond), Venom, Slayer, Entombed.
Hypocrisy.
I've been listening to them for a while and only just realised today how utterly orgasmic they are.
My favourite tracks so far are...
Blood Drenched.
Destroyed.
The Abyss.
Soon to add more to that little list. Now I'm even more glad I stole my boyfriends' Hypocrisy hoodie. (...Well, I did bring it back again. <_<... And then he gave it to me... >_>... I only "stole" it for one night. <_<...)

Ah Metal! A great force which pounds through out the darkest halls. Old School Thrash/Death is bad ass, can't go wrong with stuff like Slayer, Bathory, Entombed and of course Morbid Angel. However right now I am more in the mood for stuff like Aeon and Severe Torture.
