    Yes, he was a 1st Class SOLDIER. You find that out in FFVII: Crisis Core at the end. When the game starts for the original FFVII he is an ex-SOLDIER(Meaning used to be). Now he is a member of AVALANCHE, a group of rebels who hate the Shinra Electric Power Company for everything they did.
