Definitely Link's Awakening even though it's not the best one I played. It was my first game in Zelda series, though there's more behind it than nostalgia, the game itself means the world to me as it was a present from my best friend who died in a terrible car accident. God knows how many times I've beaten it so far, I swear I could do it blindfolded.
The one I consider to be the best though, is Ocarina of Time. First time I saw Zelda game that has a "meaningful" story. I like the other entries in GB era also, Oracle of Ages/Seasons were fun, especially Minish Cap in which for the first time I saw Vaati, finally a fresh change after Ganon who became tedious I'll have to admit. The first Zelda on NES was good, I should probably give it more credit as it inspired many great games later on including Final Fantasy.
Majora Mask and Link to the Past were good also, great in fact, I appreciate darker approach of Majora Mask, Link to the Past was great all around. Phantom Hourglass was also a decent game, new features were certainly nice.
Now when I look at my post I realize that I enjoyed playing every game in the series, I have yet to dislike a Zelda game, which is amazing as every game is almost the same, but still haven't became tedious. With that said I think Zelda can be even better, if Miyamoto would put more effort in story department that is.
Also Sabin, Zelda is pure example of action adventure game, it has nothing to do with RPG.
