I'm talking about hack and slash, everything is on the developers. Add in the power up button aka Devil Trigger, or make your guy have bad ass powers aka God of War...almost the same thing in my book. What else is different. Because I felt no difference in either game.

That's like saying that all shooters are the same because you have guns that shoot in all of them.

Devil May Cry is much more action oriented. The focus is on swift, stylish combos that require expert timing and reflexes to pull off. The combat in God of War is a lot more simplistic, using a style that's less over the top, less quick and less stylish while being more brutal and heavy. The adventure element in God of War is also a lot more refined than in Devil May Cry. The puzzles in Devil May Cry are barely puzzles and most of the time only serve to break up the action. God of War uses puzzles expertly and the guys and gals at Sony Santa Monica have really produced some fine puzzles for their games. So to summarize, Devil May Cry takes a lot more from the action side of the action adventure genre while God of War scales down the action a bit in favour of more adventure, similar to Zelda in some ways.

Hack and slash isn't really a useful genre, unless being applied to Dynasty Warrior type games.
