I think it was perfect. For one reason only...
When was the last time you left a film and felt horrible afterwards? Never. There was no happy ending, no (intentional) comic relief, just sad, insane, psychotic behavior and a man's struggle with keeping it all together...
It was a film about insanity. Imagine yourself in that same situation and what your mind does to you being alone like that. When I was in that theater and the scene came up when Will was trapped by the Darkseekers, everyone was laughing at the thing with Fred. How is that funny? He is losing his mind....
I dont really know the best way to explain this all, clearly, but if you see the film and go into it with your focus on emotion, opposed to shiny, flashy movie BS, you will appreciate it more.
My girlfriend said it best after the film by saying " I liked it a lot, but I will never see it again. I don't ever wanna feel that way again." That was the point right there. Expose the dark, painful side of life and the fragility of the human psychee.
