Weird way of phrasing but what will you be when your older or in the near future?
I am hoping to become a Video game designer, then if that doesn't work, a Music designer for Video games, if that doesn't work, a psychologist, if that doesn't work, a professional fighter.

I will be a video games designer. At the moment, I'm pursuing game/application testing or casual game design work in London.
If that fails, I'm doomed to the misery of admin/clerical work for the rest of my life. Or, the brighter option, become an IT Tech in a school, but it'll have to be my old secondary school or I wouldn't like it very much.

I study civil engineering, if by any chance I fail at it I'm still a building technician, I honestly hope to find a job in that field. Why? It's my passion, I love doing projects, I guess I inherited that from my grandfather who was also a building technician.
Other than that I would love to work as butler, strange I know, again, it one of my passions, weird ones, but nevertheless, and there's nothing wrong with honest work. I'm also good at drawing, in near future I'm planing to publish my own comic, manga, whatever you want to call it, we'll see how that works out though.

Well, I am graduating in April with a degree in Computer Science and an emphasis in Animation. I had hoped to do software engineering in the gaming industry, having worked at SOE last summer, but SOE is on a hiring freeze and my interview with Bungie did not work out...
I am currently interviewing with Pixar for a software development position with them, and my backup is development at a local accounting company as I have a friend there.
Unless Blizzard finally notices my applications...

I'm well on my way to a degree in psychology. I'm looking to specialize in both abnormal psychology and family therapy. Until I get my doctorate, I'll be doing generalized clinical therapy. I'm gonna be in school for f*cking ever.

Though I'm thinking about teaching Maths, English and Religion - but I'm still not sure about that. (And I have more than enough time to think about it - I have to make that decision till the end of May.) But it seems I'll do it. At least everyone I talked to says it'd be a good decision. .-.

I have a Biochemistry degree at the moment and in the fall I have an offer to start Optometry school but if I get into a dentistry school that allows Financial Aide (one I almost applied to refused to take funding from any program, whats up with that?) I'll go to that.
So an Optometrist or Dentist. Worst comes to worse, Dental Hygienist, which isn't so bad. Best case scenario I marry a girl who loves to work somewhere that pays her a lot and I can be a stay at home dad. I'm not much of a cook but I love kids and don't mind cleaning.

I'm almost half-way through my four year degree in Computer Games Design, and I'm hoping to do an industrial placement at Jagex (RuneScape, FunOrb) in Cambridge (370 miles away) or Rockstar North (Grand Theft Auto) in Edinburgh (75 miles away). Ironically enough I feel that I'm more likely to get a placement at Jagex since they openly advertise their placements in my Uni.
Even though I'm top of the class in the course, I can see the possibility of me not getting a job in the industrym and I'm not too sure what I'd do if I didn't get a role in one of the larger businesses.
I could go indie, but it's a difficult market to crack. Or alternatively, I'll become the first or second Prime Minister of the Republic of Scotland.
I will say this too budding designers. It's hard. There are many many different forces at work in the creation of games, including psychology, interaction design, communication as well as being able to make a fun product. If you're not willing to put 100% in, it's an industry that will chew you out.

It appears we have quite a few budding game designers in our midst. I myself thought of it for a while but after talking to a number of people in the field, they confirmed my suspicions. This really applies to any job and is something to keep in mind: Whatever you do all day long at a job, you will most likely not do in your free time because you'll be sick of it. For example, I used to write software in my free time just because I love doing it, but that all changed when I started working full time. I loved my job and had fun doing it, but after spending 9 hours a day writing code, I had zero interest in coming home and doing it more.
So for me the choice was easy. I love playing computer / video games so I definitely didn't want a job creating them. When I come home I want to get away from my job, not be immersed in it more. I can't say the same for everyone of course. Just something to think on. ^^
The trick to staying happy with playing games and being a designer is too seperate work and play. Dramatically.
I'm at the stage where I can play games for fun, but not my own. Anything I've had a hand in creating loses a bit of it's spark for me, and after a semester doing my course I was beginning to analyse everything critically.
But still, my course/future career doesn't involve playing the actual game, so that's probably helping the distinction. At present I'm in Level-Design mode, so playing the Sims and LittleBigPlanet loses some of it's appeal, but luckily since the spectrum of today's games is so large I can find things to play that don't relate to my work day.

True, I suppose the QA people would be the worst hit. They get paid to repetitively play the same section, etc over and over and write notes about it. That would really drain the "fun" out of gaming to me. Someone like a story designer or a music producer wouldn't really be effected because oftentimes they never even "play" the game they are working on. So yeah, it really depends on what you are doing.
That means I can definetely be a game designer.
Since early 2009, I have been working on several games, story-lines, bestiaries, animations or at least ideating about it, and everything possible.
I don't think I can get bored of it, being my game, I'm being a game designer, the director and hoping to start my own studio.

I'm curious as to how you came up with this figure for your expected minimum salary. This is the most up-to-date look at the reality of pay for those in the gaming industry, and while your projected salary is not completely unheard of, it is definitely not something I would go around expecting to make as a minimum. I mean 180,000 is the highest recorded salary for ANYONE in the game design field. I would like to point out however, that I don't want to attack you over this or say that you should change careers, but feel that it's a nice and responsible thing to point out to a fellow human.

Yes, I have heard about the medium for game developers.
Trust me, I have so much in store for my designing. It will be massive work, I can say that, but I have great drawing abilities, gaining great musical abilities(9 years piano, 1 year guitar, and learning violin soon), and already have 1 of 5 game designs basically complete.
Before I post, no negative comebacks, I know what I am saying when I post this.
If I am a music designer, graphical director, Game director, Storyboard artist, Storyboard director... Things start to add up.
Plus, one of my games honestly just needs to start the building process, then I getting on a scary game, and an adventure game, then a samurai game.
All of which are past the ideating stage.

If you'd been around longer, you'd know that I've been working on a project for a number of years (since 2007 - there's even evidence). And I have to say that the progress I've made only results in around 1-2hours gameplay max, that's with someone else designing the graphics, sound and the story having been written in 2007.
I have qualifications related to musical composition and programming, and even at this point actual game design. Having more skills doesn't make progress faster, it slows it down. Especially if you're planning to go into detail.
I think you may be underestimating the amount of work you have to do.
But since I don't want to get into an argument with you, I feel obligated to say good luck and ignore any more of your enthusiasm.

Development time for games is honestly a very odd thing, for my main project this year I'm working as part of a team of 2 designers and 2 programmers. Sure it's a 2D Platformer in XNA, but we've actually got quite a lot done in the last 9 weeks.
Modelling a 3D Game would be a bitch though.

It depends on your modeling skills I think. I have had experience mostly with Maya in terms of modeling characters, and the only ties I have used with it have been openGL and UDK... With OpenGL I have personally imported 3d models and it really is not too crazy (I dont know much about animation with openGL). UDK has functionality for importing 3d models in, and setting your skeleton meshes and stuff.
I am not sure about XNA however. That is my next area of interest. Once semester has ended, and depending on where i end up I am looking on doing a game in XNA... I will learn more about what it requires then.

Is that in JPY or something? Companies won't pay you big bucks without actual experience working for one that develops games. Not only that, the economy is in the shitter and getting these places to pay $55k for three years is a stretch depending on the area.
Now if you want to pick up contract work, you can make good money. Unfortunately you get no benefits whatsoever, so all that extra money needs to be saved up. If you don't you'd just be shooting yourself in the foot come retirement. I know quite a few people who have gone the way of contract jobs and yeah, they live the high life. They don't have a penny saved up and when their contract ends, they crash and burn until they can scrape up another. I don't want to live like that, but to each his own.
If you're fronting the company, you definitely won't make that amount of money, especially not for the first few years. It might even take longer. Not everything will add up and fall into place in the way you're thinking. It takes more than just having the skills and the ideas - it take commitment and discipline. David Cage, the designer behind Heavy Rain, was working up to fifteen hours a day for a whole year just on the writing part - AND he had a whole creative team behind him.
It takes a lot of sacrifice. Health and mental state will deteriorate after long periods of time working on a project, and no matter how much you enjoy the subject, it'll start to grate after a while.
Really, I'd be happy working in social media for a game company. Sony have been advertising a few jobs for Home, which I've been interested in. Testing would probably do my head in because I like gaming too much. But I might like it - I'm very thorough with my video games, and I don't stop until I've seen as much of it as possible. As for being a designer, I just want to set a story in motion and see what comes of it. I have my ideas, but it'll be a while before I have my own offices and dedicated team of however many.

Well, I know that, but I have one game 100% laid out, all I need is to start the literal design phase. I don't plan on starting the new studio until I have a name for myself.

Ninety hours on a first run? Sounds like a lot of work to do on your own. Not to piss on your fireworks or anything though, it doesn't sound like you have a well thought out plan. While you're dedicating time to making the game for consumer use, who's paying bills and putting food on the table? You're going to need some start up money, and the start up money needs to last as long as your dedication to the game creation will be. I think there's more stages than you've geared yourself up for.
I've made a small iPhone game as part of my college work, and it sucks when you have to do everything yourself. I actually thought the coding part was fun, but when you've really ****ed up, coding becomes a nightmare to solve. As well as getting the code to work, I had to design all the objects myself, make a user-friendly interface, and make it idiot proof. Testing was fun too - playing it multiple times, and hoping to hell it matched the formulas I had down on paper. Making that game took me over thirty hours, going by lesson time (I don't have a Mac at home, and I preferred xcode to a C language at the time - another story all together x.x). Thirty hours doesn't sound like a lot of time, and a pro would probably have been able to do it in half that time, but it was stressful.

Im in a class right now working on a team of about 10 people, about 7 programmers and 3 artists and we are using the UDK for our game. Started start of semester and we may be lucky to finish one level of our game.
I encourage your vision though, just look at how 2 guys did Braid. I think they give a good estimate for what the workload is for less people.
Personally, having worked a bit in the industry, its a very interesting area. Pretty much to get in, you have to be in. You also want to be careful of the companies you work for. Some expect you to sell your soul to them and the 60+ hour crunch time turns into months and years simply because you work for that company. They could care less if that means it kills your family life.
Burnout in gaming is extremely high though. I have an acquaintance at Epic Games and he said from what he knew programmers last 3-4 years in the industry. It just depends on where you work. Big Sweat Shops like EA probably that is the case. Smaller private companies like Valve or Epic, maybe not so much.
Its a tough industry to be sure, but you would be surprised how many of the guys I worked with at SOE played games regularly in their free time. When SC2 came out we played it together at lunch nigh unto every day. There was always talk about Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, Mass Effect and other games. In fact, from the team I was on I can only think of one guy who was not at least a passive gamer.

Security offers several branches of progression, but I'm thinking I'll end up either a Security Consultant or an Instructor as realistically I'm not going to stay physically capable forever and those roles do attract quite a nice wage over here...
