I don't want the Dumb America Experience, as it sounds (and probably is) scary. You managed to elect Obama as your president, and he is yet to be shot, so at the moment I'm feeling optimistic about your country. I get annoyed enough at the swathes of foreginers I've met who hear my accent and proceed to immediately: A) Call me English, B) Tell me how cute the Queen is, C) Ask me if I know her personally and D) Attempt to imitate me. I fear that the Dumb Americans would take that oft-repeated cycle to a whole new level, so I wish to avoid them as much as possible.

Thanks for the informations. It does sound fascinating. It's a statement to my curiosity about America that I'm not even scared of the prospect of having to get on an aeroplane. Miami, 'Godless'? Evan said that the last time he was there he saw a billboard that just read, in huge letters, JESUS LOVES YOU. Then again, I come from a country where Charles Darwin's face appears on some £10 notes, so who knows.

From what you say about all the Cubans, the Haitians, and so on, it does sound like the America I'd like to see. A true melting pot, not the half-baked 'multicultural' shit we have over here. Evan's absentee ballot was written in three languages, and I impressed by that. It sounds neat.

I hope I won't die of heat, though. In Scotland a heatwave is a day or two where temperatures remain above 25 oC - 77 Fahrenheit, apparently. In Poland in the summer, I had to take a nap every time it topped 30 oC. As part of the trip, if it happens, we'd be spending a few days in New Mexico, seeing a friend of mine and going on somewhat of a personal pilgrimage to Whitesands and the Trinity Site. Apparently it's even warmer there. I will have to come up with some plans to avoid falling about the place from heat.

Thank you for your insight, though. To be honest I asked you, a native, to see if your instant reaction would be 'It's a shithole, go elsewhere'. Life has taught me that if a city is respected by the people who live there, it's worth going to. You may have just sealed the deal on Heather Does America.

Do you mind if I use you as a tourist information point for a moment? Evan has family in Miami, and we were considering going over to stay with them for a couple of weeks in the summer because air prices have gone through the floor and I want to see America.

Would you recommend a holiday in Miami? Is it worth the money? I want to see a place that's a kind of American soundboard, if that makes sense. To see if your food is huge, if Jesus and Pals are really that important, and if everybody stands up for the national anthem at sporting events. Remember, all I know about your country comes from political news and Hollywood movies - so it's a pretty weird image.

Art school is pretty awesome. Even when people don't take what I'm doing seriously... I just think of how much fun my classes are compared to theirs... and I feel just fine.

I do like it too. It is a tribute to excellent and inspirational oratory. But at the same time, Tom Morello crooning 'Yes we can, I want channge' just seems wrong to me somehow. I can't quite describe it. Maybe it's too good to be watching without some kind of suspicion.

Or it could just be that things about 'hope' are a bit gay.
