I got stuck with that at first, too. It seems you have to use Rico to tame the both the bat and the snake, but one at a time. Then march each one beside you to the door, examine it, and it'll get sacrificed.

I think it's getting worse. And if I cough too much at school, they'll advise me to stay home. =P
