Irony? Hmm, I don't think so. I will admit to leaning to one side, only because the libertarian argument just seems to be a big sign that says 'don't touch me'. However hard paternalists are simply arrogant. The libertarian paternalists already inhabit a middle ground. For instance, they're people who want to make you reach over a salad to get at the cake. You can still choose the cake (libertarian), but your 'systematic cognitive biases' are put into a more even balance when you see the salad first, and are thereby less inclined to choose instant gratification over your long-term health.

Simple application: is it really fair to put candy bars at the checkout, where you'll be standing, at your most hungry, for a not-too-short but not-too-long period of time? It's hard to say we're actually making a rational decision when we grab one.

What is (will) your thesis (be) on?

You know, I'm not too sure. I am quite convinced by behavioural economics, but to almost conclude that people aren't actually capable of rationality seems difficult. It will probably be balanced. Everything is easier with a balanced essay.

I rarely give my true opinions in class. I fool around as the Devil's advocate in tutorials. I can't help it; something about someone else holding my own opinion allows me to see logical and conceptual flaws that for some reason are never apparent in other situations.

I've been busy with uni going back for the year. Currently writing 2011's first essay (on so-called libertarian paternalism). Other than that, I broke up with my girlfriend. Which felt horrible, then good, then immaterial.

I get the feeling you've been at university for ever. Is it strange that I wouldn't mind that?

I think my intentions were a bit clearer in the original I wrote. When it was deleted, I couldn't be bothered being terribly clear, just getting something across relatively quickly.

Yeah sorry, I did go on about HYVs a little too much; but that's where my knowledge lies in this area, and why I got you to make this thread so I could bring my knowledge more into the 21st century.

However, I'd still be willing to argue that many of the features of HYVs persist in GMOs, as well as many of the attitudes and 'philosophies' surrounding agriculture and global agribusiness.

Haha.. It certainly is, though in years past, I would gripe about it because we would be out and about waaaaay too early in the morning.
