um... a really fake one. The demon slaying sound good but how about having it so there are two rune sets, the kaballah and the reverse kaballah (The kaballah is the knowledge tree in jewish mythology I think) Then you could have it so what your summoning is either good or bad, for example an angel or a demon
ohh no sorry forgot to comment on that part, the second sounds better, i was talking about the dreams ooooooooo brain wave, how about it sumons great deffender but also summons giant demons/monsters etc. as penance, so you must slay the demons to awaken the great deffender. P.S. completely forgot, do you know what a glasgow smile is?
So you want a group of runes which grant power over space and time, right? How are they going to know where to go to find said runes, ancient texts or just exploring old ruins in a kind of chain riddle quest (for example you go to one and solve a riddle about where to go next / there is a part of a riddle in each of the ruins the more they go to the more obvious it becomes where the runes are)
I like the first idea >:-) The scars are made on the 18th day after the child's 15th birthday by and unknown spirit, they just wake up in extreme agony blood pouring from teh wounds but after one day they are healed over and are thick white scars. Also, teh girls guardian (her parents are jailed) is a thin man, grey hair, black eyes, and most importantly his body is covered in scars, worst of which is his Glasgow smile. He has a rough attitude and will start a fight and though the first punch.
You know what would be really quite funny, having one of them see the other having an intimate relationship with someone else during the dream. More seriously though, how is it that they get the scars? Are they a sign of knowledge carved into the flesh by their teachers or is magic an instant wonder with some kind of artefact that fuses into the flesh leaving a specific scar pattern. Maybe the runes could give powers over space and time or the ability to summon a powerful defender (they could be ancient heroes or powerful monsters) a different one for each rune (personally I think the second one has the most merit for a continuing adventure as it gives you a much wider scope to work with)
The Restraint jacket is meant to be out of place, but the rune on his eyes would fit in with another idea i had. The thing with magic in this tale is that it has nothing to do with speaking or summoning, it just happens when you think it basically, but each spell caster can only have one or two element, and judging of each element they have a mark kind of scar/pattern on their body. I am sort of doing the characters at the moment, lol. Basically the world is set out in semi continents, so very big countries, there will be forests, ice regions, swamp, deserts, etc. The main story follows the girl but later on they join, but yes effectively its just starting out in a simple town and they some how meet and then find out their true destiny. The main thing they are looking for is a set of runes that will do something (don't know yet, if you come up with something that would be great ^_^) They are semi aware in two ways, the first every month they have particular dream which is what the other person has done over the month in fast-forward, and the second thing you suggested. Oh and after they find whatever they are looking for, she disappears, and they have to find her.
