Man I wish I got to study such cool stuff

I'm studying Human Geography and Development studies, and most of the reading is out of a textbook. I'm taking a religion paper and an international politics paper as well this trimester though, so I've been reading excerpts and even full versions of some fairly important texts. I read Machiavell's The Prince on Saturday, and the original article version (it became a book) of Samuel Huntingdon's The Clash of Civilisations. So yeah, some interesting things, but a lot of it requires effort to lift the page.

Ahh I really wanted to read The Count of Monte Cristo last year, but I never got around to it. It was after I heard the classical piece by the same name (forgot the composer) in The Shawshank Redemption. I was writing an essay on the music in the film, so I read about the book, and it sounded really good, but... just not enough hours in the day.

How many languages do you speak?

Neds cause most of Scotland's problems. They don't raise their kids properly, usually get pregnant during their teenage years, always enjoy drugs and drink beyond sanity. They work for their money though. A ned who doesn't work is just a jakey.

But it's honestly not that bad. I've never been attacked by a person. I've been chased by the dogs that neds don't lock up, but never by them themselves. Offer them a cigarette and they usually **** off. People stand up to them when they cause trouble in crowded places.

Watch a documenary about street crime in London. Now that's scary shit. I know media outlets and tourists tend to paint Scotland as a knife-riddled shithole, I've never met anyone who's been stabbed, and I come from a very bad ned estate. We're doing ok.

Scotland is like any other country - violence is limited to poorer areas in cities and towns. We do have a special breed of it though, spread by the rapid dismemberment of our economy, especially in Glasgow, under Thatcher. Neds, the tracksuited ones, are the most violent. Neds are prevalent in all cities, but contained to their estates for the most part. Govan, Sighthill, and Maryhill are Glasgow's worst. For Edinburgh it's Leith, for Aberdeen Torry and Northfield. Places to avoid. And Dundee, or Scumdee, is to be avoided because it is a shithole.

I know exactly how you feel, man. I've been back at uni for two weeks now, and I really want to read Dune, which I started in the two week winter holiday, and got 200 pages in until I abruptly had to stop to give way for ridiculous amounts of uni reading. I think I spent 15 minutes reading Dune, and felt almost guilty afterward... damn readings, they're such ball breakers.

I've been somewhat keeping up with the Tour de France. I got into it after reading Lance Armstrong's autobiography, but I'm not familiar with many of the recent names, so I'm a little on the back foot here. It goes through parts of Belgium, Germany and Spain, right? Did you go see it?

Hell yeah. My name's very old. We used to control the whole of Galloway and Dumfries, then somehow ended up being shipped to America and Australia by the English. Variants of my surname litter the world. As for my contingent, we're a gang of over-breeding, uneducated working class alcoholics living in self-imposed squalor near Glasgow. Except me, because I got out. Maybe I can make having my name something to be proud of again, rather than something repeated in court.

That question is pretty broad. Haha um... I guess my two favorite performers are Elvis Presley and Vienna Teng. And I'm a big admirer of Ella Fitzgerald. I like some ska (the thing that kills most popular ska bands for me is bad singing), bluegrass, blues, jazz, classical guitar, world music, classic rock, rock, swing, some pop... I'm really not picky as long as it's good music. I tend to go for stuff with a nice melody and good voices (if there are voices involved), but I'm not opposed to rap, depending on lyrics. Aesop Rock is a favorite for that.

I just started listening to this guy Tommy Emmanuel. If you love guitars, I think you'd like this guy. He's acoustic and it's incredible. He sings in a few songs, but I listen to him for his guitar playing. He's mostly instrumental.

Robert Randolph plays a killer pedal-steel guitar. And his bass player is superb. They're like funk/blues/sometimes gospel.

And a good violin/fiddle player will get me excited every time.
