    I was excited until...

    Until, well...

My long awaited(since mid-November) FFVIII PC version did not function properly. At any rate, damper in the day, completely totally. Grrr... Kill it!

Anyways, I installed everything just fine with the installation disk and all and all system requirements were WELL exceeded. The only thing that wasn't functional was 8-bit graphics, but I have enough RAM for that to work according to the ReadMe and it also isn't "necessary" according to the ReadMe.

So after that, I install CD 1 and expect the Autorun... Autorun gives me five files. I try out the files, run them with FFVIII's program and get FFVIII running. I thought it was strange the Autorun didn't directly initialize the game, but the Squaresoft screen started up with one of them five files and the smexy music started and I probably squeed at that point.

So now, I'm thoroughly excited and just for shits and giggles, I watch the long beginning schpeal, and write down Playstation controller equivalences(hehe). Schpeal finishes and I go down to menu screen and select "NEW GAME".

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

... Well not exactly. That'd have been cooler. Anyways, all of a sudden, the game closes and I get a prompt "FF8.exe has a problem and has to close. Windows will let you know if a solution is available". Of course, handy ol' Windows Vista can't do crap, so I get another prompt "FF8.exe has a problem"(thanks, captain obvious!) and voila! Back to square one!

The help website was actually down and out for the count, so I couldn't get help there, so I'm wondering if any of you guys could possibly figure what's up or perhaps some basic programming error could be fixed. Or maybe for some enlightenment.

    Anyone?

    Wel

"To get FF8 (PC version) to work on windows VISTA move the ff8.exe file to the directory one level up.

    for example:

    C:\program files\eidos interactive\SQUARESOFT, Inc\FINAL FANTASY 8\ff8.exe

    moved to

    C:\program files\eidos interactive\SQUARESOFT, Inc\ff8.exe

don't ask me why it works or how it just does. i own the pc version of the game and had wanted to play the game again since i had trouble running the psx version on my psp. I can't remember the forum or the website but someone posted that it worked like that on vista.

Just double click on the ff8.exe icon and the game should run fine.

Oh and remember to run the game using software rendering else there is a good chance there will be graphical glitches in the game."
Quick google search gave me this. It cant hurt to try right? I hope it works 0.o

    Holy smack!
You are like, light shed on a dark path. *glomped*
...Let's just hope that I can managed to run the game without it glitching.
These disks are shot to hell.

Though- it did the same error again. I'm not sure if it's disk related, BUT I wonder if anyone knows any OTHER possible issues...

    Final Fantasy VIII
    The problem: Crashes immediately.

Solution: First off, download and install the version 1.2 patch, whether it's essential or not. (Update: Service Pack 1 seems to have fixed this problem so moving the EXE is not necessary.) All you have to do is move the EXE file to another directory. I made a "\Game" folder in the "\FINAL FANTASY VIII" folder to put it in.

Other thoughts: I have no clue why moving the file worked, but whatever. Don't forget to fix your shortcuts.
Well if it crashes right away try following this one and download the version patch. Let me know if it works.

If its the discs though I think your pretty screwed unless you buy new ones. Or try copying them and use the copied version that can often work.

Have you tried running it in Compatibility mode? it doesn't work often, but it's worth a shot.

Once you've finished reinstalling, find your ff8.exe file, right click it, and select properties.

There should be a tab titled "compatibility"
Click the check box that says "run this program in compatibility mode for"
    then select Windows XP SP2

You can also click "run this program as administator" but you'll have to allow the program to start each time you load it.

    Hope that helped ^^

Unless you turn off those annoying UACs, then you don't have to allow it to run every time.

Well, I change the resolution and ran it as an administrator. It worked. Weirdly. o.0 GO me for tinkering.

I've found more often than not that simply running a program as Administrator solves most problems in Vista. What I find stupid is that I my user account is an Administrator but apparently according to Vista, I'm not an administrator. "You must run this as an administrator". I am, dumbass. But anyways, if something in Vista is acting stupid, always try running it as Admin first. It solves so many issues.

Have you seen my topic talking about the PC version?

Granted, I don't have Vista, but it might help if you check out the FF8 Launcher.
