Personally, of late I've fallen for GeoShell (http://www.geoshell.org/). It's a very recent thing, and I haven't explored all the things possible yet, but it has some nice alpha blending and a good amount of plugins/skins. It also uses less resources than Explorer for a nice little speed boost.

There's my current desktop. GeoShell with a nice skin I downloaded from the official site. It has great customisation if you play around. .
