oh re-do's I get it now

    - What do you think of covers?
Meh as long as it's good I'll listen to it.

    - Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?
It all depends on whose singing, who sang it, and what the song is?

    - What is your favorite cover?
my fav, most likely ummm...er....let me think here...I'd have to say Frank sinatra doing singing in the rain. original artist Gene Kelly

    - What cover do you think is the worst?
Prince's Kiss, he sounded okay sining when doves cry, but IMHO he destroyed this song, left it in an ally, and took it's wallet. original artist Art Of Noise.

    - What do you think of covers?
It can go either way. There are a lot of good ones and a lot of bad ones. For example, the original "Enjoy The Silence" by Depeche Mode beats the shit out of the Lacuna Coil rendition, I believe.

    - Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?
    Sometimes.

    - What is your favorite cover?
Diablo's cover of Duran Duran - A View To A Kill.

    - What cover do you think is the worst?
    Too many to list, seriously.

Covers are either great or total shit.

I don't mind Joe Cocker's version of A Little Help From My Friends. I found Mark Ronson's cover of Radiohead's 'Just' offensive at first but have since warmed to it. Speaking of Radiohead, there's a great song by Scroobius Pip vs Dan Le Sac that samples Planet Telex. I can't remember what it's called, but it put Radiohead's music to great use.

I heard a cover of Bowie's Let's Dance and I wanted to cry.

However, I like covers. So long as they add something to the original. Seu Jorge's album of Bowie tracks recorded acoustically in Brazilian Portuguese is sublime. Bowie himself was full of nothing but praise to Mr Jorge for giving his old songs this new dimension. For songs like that, and the like of Joe Cocker et al, I'll defend covers.

I believe the Radioead sample Heather speaks of is A Letter from God to Man, by the wonderfully talented Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip, which can be seen here:

YouTube - Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip - Letter from God

Also, Joe Cocker is the master of covers.

    1) What do you think of covers?
As Gov said, it can be really good or just crap. It's interesting to see an original song from another bands being used by another band and using it with their own style.

    2) Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?

It depends really. Vocally and musically. And if I like the band or not.

    3) What is your favorite cover?
    I have a few:
    Nine Inch Nails-"Hurt"
    Evanescence-"Thoughtless"
    Emilie Autumn-"Is It My Body?"
    Depeche Mode-"Tainted Love"
Lacuna Coil-"Enjoy The Silence" (I don't like it as much as the original but they did do it justice. )
    Zeromancer-"Fade To Black"
    Jack Off Jill-"I Touch Myself"

    4) What cover do you think is the worst?
I love Disturbed but their cover of Faith No More isn't all that great and bored me a bit. I heard the original "Midlife Crisis" by Faith No More and it's better. =/

EDIT: I was curious to hearing how Avril covered Chop Suey and add that to the worst cover. Poor SOD.

What do you think of covers?

    Some are awesome, others...
Well there's a wide range of variation. Some are slightly worse, some are just bad.

Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?

Sometimes. It's not the most common thing though. I find a lot of covers where there's a style change can either make them a whole lot better or a whole lot worse.

    What is your favorite cover?

I've loved Nirvana's cover of Love Buzz. I preferred it to the original by Shocking Blue quite a bit...
I also liked Nirvana's covers of The Man Who Sold The World originally by David Bowie, and Where Did You Sleep Last Night who Nirvana credited to Lead Belly, but I'm pretty sure it has it's earliest roots elsewhere...

What cover do you think is the worst?

I don't think I could single one out in particular as I tend to avoid them pretty much entirely, BUT I can't stand most covers of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. The original was a classic and a great listen and I doubt I'll ever hear a cover that beats the original. I literally wince every time I hear a cover of it will be played.

And I also tend to dislike conversions of alternative rock songs into a more pop styled cover. REALLY DISLIKE.

Hahaah It's bad isn't. Avril killed it, she also did another cover to a pretty heavy song, can't remember what it was though... I'll find it.

NO-ONE covers FnM songs and does it better NO-ONE I TELLS YA!!!!!
Maybe thats just the ditsy fanboy coming out in me :S

Oh and I found another one for the worst list.
Megadeths cover of "Battery" By Metallica, now I know Dave Mustain is and was old Metallica, but he sure cannot be new Metallica (well from when he left.)

What do you think of covers?
-It all depends. On so many things.

Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?
-Yeah, they can. Doesn't mean they always are, and most often aren't.

    What is your favorite cover?
-Emilie Autumn did a great cover of Is It My Body by Alice Cooper. I also think that Gary Jules did an amazing cover of Mad World. And to be honest, I don't even like it better than the Tears for Fears version.. He made it into such a different song they're incomparable.

What cover do you think is the worst?
-There's a few. Most recently, I heard Fall Out Boy do an absolutely HORRENDOUS version of "Beat It" by Micheal Jackson. They also destroyed the song Roxanne. Also, when Jessica Simpson tried to cover Angels by Robbie Williams. She just didn't do it justice, one bit.

Interesting, It appears that Lacuna Coil is one of your favorite bands.
Did you know that Evanescence is accused of ripping off Lacuna Coil? People say that Evanescence has made a pretty good living by ripping off that band.

In my personal opinion I think people need to shut up! comparing Evanescence to Lacuna Coil is like comparing USA to Afghanistan! but wait! this not even a valid comparison! totally different sounds. I've listened to both but Evanescence blew me away!

Cristina has such a powerful voice which I really love but that dude who is called Andrea...don't really know what to say about him but he really disturbs me..>.>; I think Lacuna Coil could only hope to come close to Evanescence. Evanescence is simply the best band with a female singer. that just my opinion, but hey Fishie! If you love Lacuna Coil then ignore it.

I was listening to that song at Youtube and I totally agree with you but their cover of Land of Confusion was great. love that animated video too!
In fact, most of Disturbed music videos are great.

It's all good. I also hate how people compare them to each other as well. Their music and their style is entirely different as you've mentioned. Just because they both a have a female fronted vocalist, it doesn't mean they copied one another or one of them ripped the other one off.

And actually, I've been into Evanescence longer then I have been into Lacuna Coil. And I remember I had gone through that phase where I was EVANESCENCE, EVANESCENCE, EVANESCENCE, EVANESCENCE!!!! They're an awesome band. I love them. Same with Lacuna Coil. But they will always be different from one another. Lyrically, musically, and vocally.

What are/is your favourite type(s) of music?

I'm actually into most music genres. Metal, Rock, etc. I enjoy all of them except Rap. I DESPISE RAP! Soulja Boy has got to be the most pathetic thing I have ever saw.

Do you have a particular favourite artist/band? If so, who?

At the moment, my favourite band has to be Disturbed. Their new album Indestructible is awesome. Haunted, Enough, Indestructible, Facade, The Night, Perfect Insanity and Inside the Fire are great songs.

I also am into Breaking Benjamin, Evanessence, Midtown, Theory of a Deadman and I have recently started to like The Getaway Plan. Old Linkin Park is great music as well. I hate to be too mainstream, but I must say Metallica is a great band as well, even though Fade to Black got them banned out of most countries.

How has music affected your life?

Music has had a major impact on my life. I always used to listen to music since the age of 7. I guess it was kind of a relief from the sadness from around that time.

Then I got to primary school and I always used to like to sing, and then decided on joining the choir. That didn't affect me too much, other then the occasional "sissy choir boy" comments. I did my own thing, screw changing who I am for them.

I then got to high school and my musical tastes changed. I started to like all forms of music, instead of just being obsessed with one kind of genre. Metal and Rock became more apparent on my mp3 player and I recently started liking Techno.

Music has helped me get though rough patches in my life. It calms me down. Which is a good thing.

    Have any musical talents?

I have a few. I used to play the Trumpet in grade 5 to grade 7. I never practiced yet managed to pull off a A in homework. Go figure.

And as I stated before, I joined the choir, and believe it or not, I can actually sing. *shock* *horror*. Some of the best times of my life so far were back there. Lol.

And I can play guitar as well. Quite well too. Not as well as most people, but good enough to play along with my favourite songs.

What's your favourite song at the moment?

At the moment, my favourite song would have to be a fight between Haunted by Disturbed and Brother my Brother by Blessid Union of Souls.

They are both great songs lyrically and instrumentally. I guess I would choose Haunted if it came down to it.

    ----------------

Has anyone actually heard the cover for Rihanna's - Umbrella. It was done by All Time Low. I found it better than the original myself, but that might be because I despise Rihanna. XD.

    Agree.

Yeah, the same thing is happening to me! I swear I can't stop thinking of them! the funny thing is, I never ever thought I would listen to a band like Evanescence! you know, because of the huge difference between their sound and the sound of my favorite bands (Godsmack, Metallica and Alice in Chains). but man, I was so wrong! It appears my taste in music has changed other the years. I think I know why..but now, all what I know is I can't imagine myself living without Evanescence. so, damn you Dystopia!

But they will always be different from one another. Lyrically, musically, and vocally.
Exactly. that's what people need to understand.

What are/is your favourite type(s) of music?
Ha, wow, I might as well just list all the genres I listen to. I love Rock, some Progressive Metal, Instrumental Rock, some Orchestral (basically Final Fantasy/The Black Mages), a bit of Techno, Trance. I also realy like 80's Rock, 80's Dance, and 80's Pop, for some reason. Basically the only things I don't like for the most part are Country, and Rap. Though there are a few hip-hop/rap songs I like.

Do you have a particular favourite artist/band? If so, who?
I like a lot of bands, but here's a top 5 or 6 list of what I've liked the longest, and the most

    -Godsmack
    -Dream Theater
    -Buckethead (amazing guitarist)
    -The Black Mages
    -Taproot
-System of a Down, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Rush, Pink Floyd.

(pretty cool how I threw all those in there, eh?)

How has music affected your life?
It's kept me going through some of the toughtest times in my life. It's a link to my past, to the good ol days when my family was still happy go lucky, and we'd fly down the road blasting whatever was on the rock station. It sets the pace for many things I do (Dragonforce and Disturbed helped me research and type a 7 page term paper in less than five hours, and I got a C!) It's also a great way to vent out anger and other emotions.

    Have any musical talents?

Does Guitar hero count? I've five starred every song on GH Rock's the 80's, Every song except for Six by all that Remains in GH2, and all except for TTFAF, The Way it Ends, Take This Life, and Raining Blood on GH3. Because I'm that much of a dork XD. I used to own an acoustic guitar, but it's in my old house, which my family can't go in, for environmental reasons. I never good play it anyway.

What's your favourite song at the moment?
Wow, That's the hardest question yet. To be honest, I have a list of favorite songs too

    Home - Dream Theater
    Soothsayer - Buckethead
    Premontion - The Black Mages
    Poem - Taproot
All the Right Words - Ill Nino.

if I absolutely had to choose one, though, it'd be Soothsayer or Home.

    yep yep!

    @ Joesteel Welcome.

Listening to: You Don't Know - Reel Big Fish

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

I dont think that my music tastes have changed per se. They have widen somewhat though.
As a child I was brought up listening to 80's glam rock like Gunners and Crue, so that music is always with me, I have started to appreciate music without lyrics now, which has gotten me into Neo Classical band such as GS!BE.

I have found out I like almost everything. Like right now i'm listening to Reel Big Fish, and before that I listened to Rush, and I just changed to Death, so I can easily say if my music tastes haven't changed, they have grown substantialy.

*I have an idea, when we post, we say what we're listening to up the top, just so people get a fell of our tastes more.*

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

Well I've always liked grunge to some extent. But when younger I tended to go with what most were more into. Basically mainstream rock, alternative rock with softer vocals, stuff like that.

After that in late primary school a lot of my mates were listening bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit leading to me buying a few CDs but I still favoured grunge, punk and a few other forms of rock. I liked a good beat, preferably louder than softer.

Early high school it was bands like Disturbed (which I still listen to) and Linkin Park (who I don't mind a bit now, but don't really listen to them any more.) And Grunge. I think Nirvana was my most listened to band at that point. I also picked up a fondness for Deftones, who I still listen to occasionally, often if the mood suits it. I also started getting into other grunge bands and bands with grunge influences around mid to late high school. Think psychedelic grunge like Love Battery and Grunge metal like the Melvins. Great stuff...

Which brings me to this present day. Pretty much every artist I listen to has a song or two with a grunge style or influences. It's just what I like to hear.

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

Well, when I was younger, I was into pretty much pop and classical. I guess that came with being in choir.

But when i got to around about Grade 7, I started to like Game music. Music from Sonic and Final Fantasy as such. I guess you could still count FF as classical considering everything is composed by Nobou Uematsu. But as well as that, I liked Green Day, Evanessence, Simple Plan so that was pretty much a mix of what was popular in that year, combined with my liking of Classical and Game music.

High School. I started to like metal bands. Disturbed, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold and multiple others. I guess thats when I started to become more anti-social. But I got to grade 10 and realised that I liked Techno now. So I would listen to a mix of pretty much....anything. Depending on my mood, depends on what song I listen to, that sounds really corny, but its true.

Welcome, both of you ^^. Craven, that Umbrella cover was actually pretty good. Much better than Rihanna's...I can't stand her.

My music tastes have changed dramatically. When I was younger, I went with what I was encouraged to listen to, much like all kids. Britney Spears, and all that other yadda yadda. Pop, basically. Then I was introduced to Rock and Metal, and I was blown away. I thought "Why didn't you show me this six bloody years ago?!" haha. Eventually, as I found more of these types of bands and listened to them more and more, I grew out of Pop. And I can confirm that I'd never go back to listening to it.

And also, that's a good idea, Spiral...

@Dysty: That's one of my favorite Ev songs off The Open Door album. The violin is nice in the beginning. Definitely should throw that in for the next album.

    For Omega's question:

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

My music has changed drastically. Starting out from R&B & Rap, I never thought that my music interests would change like the way they are. I started getting into rock when about a year and a half ago. A friend of mine had Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness" on his myspace and I thought it was the most coolest thing I had ever heard. I started to check out more stuff and the band immediately become one of my all-time favorite bands. And because of them, it started me off into checking out other rock bands like Sevendust, KoRn, Fear Factory, Sixx:A.M., The Smashing Pumpkins, Orgy, Dope, Drowning Pool, Meshuggah and several others.

Evanescence was another band that actually got me into the gothic metal & gothic rock genres. Though Evanescence is classified as Alternative Rock or whatever , I did go through this phase were I was obsessed with them. I found Amy's voice truly unique and the band's style as well. But eventually, the hunger for them faded away and I started listening to bands like Beseech, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, After Forever, Mandragora Scream, Epica, Tristania, Nightwish, Paradise Lost, Crematory, Moonspell, Coffin For Mary, and London After Midnight.

Orgy was another band that helped me get into bands with industrial influences like KMFDM, Snake River Conspiracy, Kidneythieves, Razed In Black, Nine Inch Nails, Black Comedy, Fear Factory, Celldweller, Mindless Self Indulgence, A Dark Halo, Angelspit, Hanzel and Gretyl, and Zeromancer.

And this might sound cheesy but there are people on here that I thank for showing me some awesome stuff:

Omega Weapon: Godsmack, Alice In Chains
Nathan: Deftones, Alice In Chains, Green River
Sinister: Haha. My goth mentor. Him and Froggie are a major impact on my music. ThouShaltNot, Bauhaus, Rosetta Stone, Sisters Of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees.. the list can go on.
Gobble Vamp: Rasputina, Emilie Autumn, Hannah Fury, The Cruxshadows, ThouShaltNot, Scarling, The Dresden Dolls...List can go on too.
    Craven & Ann: Breaking Benjamin

But yeah. My music tastes have come a long way and I think I have a more diverse taste then what I used to.

Well I guess to put it simply my taste in music has gone from "twinkle twinkle little star" from some kids tape to bands like Emery, Anberlin, and the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

Yeah I think music taste changes as one becomes older whether that be physically or just straight up maturity, and with circumstances, a certain genre will appeal more than another depending on how you're feeling.

As for myself I progressed from the classic rock on the radio to newer punk rock pop bands that everyone else listened to, then drifted into the grunge of Seattle's offspring Nirvana and strangely with that I dabbled into Evanescence, from there the funkadelic sounds of RHCP, and this year at school people brought me into bands like the ones mentioned at the first of my post.

Most of the transitions came from the recommendation of others. Now with me I usually didn't get sucked into a whole music taste shift I would only listen to one band from a certain style, and then another band of a different style would get my attention and I would move on.

Listening to: Vicarious by Tool (One of the most awesome-est bands EVER)

    Anyways....

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

For the most part it hasn't changed all the drastically. I don't listen to Kiddie Music anymore, but I still listen to alot of the stuff I used to hear on the radio when I was younger. 90's rock, 80's rock and pop that was played on the local radio stations (I was born in 1990). Since then, the only major changes are that I listen to a lot more types of rock music. I've gone from what now is considered classic rock, to alt rock, to a bit of metal, to some instrumental guitar, depending on my mood. I almost never listen to the radio anymore, I got tired of the same eight songs being played in a loop. Besides, listening to all the hits isn't as much fun as listening to some obscure song by a band that never gets any air time (Deftones, A Perfect Circle, a couple others). So in short, I guess it grew and evolved as I did, to suit my interests, emotions, and just what I thought sounded awesome at the time.

Me too, You won't believe it but when I was a kid, I was a Pop nut! and just like you, I was encouraged to listen to Britney Spears and I really used to like her music. I also remember that one of my friends introduced me to Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls but there were probably some others that I can't recall. However, despite the fact that Spice Girls was one of must successful pop groups, I didn't like their songs at all (with the exception of Viva Forever) but I have no shame in admitting that I am still crazy for Backstreet Boys. I listen to their old CD's every day. but I always hate myself when I remember that Brintey Spears was one of my favorite artists. >.>

Anyway, I did not start developing my own musical tastes until about 15 years old when I decided to start my own adventure in the world music after listening to Pop for more that 5 years. so, I started getting into rock when I discovered Godsmack! and their "Faceless" CD was the first cd I bought with my own money. the song Straight Out Of Line on that CD was the first song that got me hooked on them. and just like Fishie, I started to check out more stuff and the band immediately become my all-time favorite rock band. then Shortly after that I discovered Alice In Chains, System of a Down, U2, Disturbed etc and I was intoduced to the kings of metal Metallica which has become one of my all time favorite bands.

In the beginning of 2007, One of my relatives got me in to some rap and hip-hop artists. I'll be honest and say that some of their songs were catchy but the lyrics were horrible! However, I can guarantee you that I have listened to almost all the so called 'best' rappers but I didn't like their songs at all so I abandoned them automatically.

Recently, a miracle happened. After so many years of hating and not recognizing the amazing genre of goth rock, I started listening to Evanescence. THEY BLEW ME AWAY. Bring Me To Life was the first song that got me hooked on them and one of the things that had attracted me to them was Dystopia's posts in the "What are you currently...." thread.

Hahaha, I never thought that you would mention Alice In Chains! I agree that I am well-known of my addiction to Godsmack but Alice In Chains too...sweet! but seriously, I really love this band and it's, If not, one of my favorite 90s bands to date.

Bottomline: I can say that my taste in music has improved so much this year but for the most part, music I enjoyed in the past, I still tend to enjoy and I don't really tend to abandon genres I used to like.

Not at all dude. Friends are a major resource when it comes to finding out about music. Especially when they can let you listen to some.
It's the fully legal 'try before you buy'. Unless you count sending mp3s to them which is very questionable at best. Even if nothing happens about it.

As for the last few posts, I've found my tastes have always centred on forms of rock and/or metal. Mostly rock though...
I don't mind some songs in a few other genres, but I noticed most other genres had CDs where I only liked one or two songs so they weren't really worth forking over $15-$40 a CD.

Grunge I like in that most albums only have one or two songs I don't like so much, if they have any at all. And Evanescence are Goth Rock? I honestly had no idea. I have a friend who listens to two things. Evanescence. And opera music with female vocals. So when I go there I automatically expect to be greeted by usually interesting music, (some operas are a little... 'dull' to me, just my personal taste) with amazing female vocals.

And yeah, great idea to write what we're listening to.

Well...yes, Evanescence are quite Goth Rock-ey. Though I believe they have an Alternative edge to them as well. And also, I think people usually label them 'Goth Rock' or 'Goth Metal' because of their image. Hmm...to be honest though, I'm finding it quite hard to assign them into just one musical category, myself.

@Omega: Wow. I'm partially the reason you got into Evanescence? Wooow. =D Haha.

I agree. People tend to sometimes label Evanescence as gothic, gothic rock, and gothic metal. Lacuna Coil is know to be a gothic metal band which is partly why people always compare Evanescence to them or Ev being compared to Within Temptation.

Ev has influences from classical and rock I noticed in their songs.. I recall reading somewhere that Amy stated that Evanescence was a rock band with a dark, epic, and moody edge. So it is kinda hard to pin point them to a certain genre.

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

Well my music taste has changed quite alot over the years. I've always grown up hearing all the classic and old rock bands being played in the background so I've aöways like Deep Purple especially and The Sex Pistols and Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath etc. which I still do like. Over the years though I guess my musical taste branched out all over the rock genre and although I do like some other non-roock bands my musical taste has generally stayed in the rock area.

One of the first bands I found and hit home with me was Green Day, their old stuff such as Dookie and Insomniac etc. It was so different than the old rock bands I had grown up listening to and Billie Joe's voice was amazing.

As I grew older my music grew steadily heavier and the styles I listened to grew more vast. With the Nu Metal invasion came lots of bands, few opf which I still listen today. I also found bands such as Tool and Dream Theatre.

After a while I started listening to bands such as Marilyn Manson and The Murderdolls, which in turn lead me to bands such as In Flames, Soilwork, Lamb of God etc. Of course there are many more bands I haven't mentioned here that lead me to new genres and so forth.

Basically my musical taste has stayed the same but diversified much more. So much so that there are even some non rock bands that I like nowadays such as Eva Cassidy.

I will admit that I had short lived thing for rap at one point and I had a HUGE thing for Michael Jackson, who I still think is an amazing artist, just a little....eccentric, and yes, I even jumped on the Spice Girls wagon^^ What fun is being a kid if you can't enjoy pop music^^

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

Tons. A few years ago i listend to punk and pretty much nothing else - my music collection must have equalled about 5 Cd's....

Nowadays i could increase that by tenfold. I don't really know when i started to change, i just heard a few songs by Atreyu and thought "hey, this isn't that bad" and kinda got into them, and then expanded through that.

Before, i would run away from anything that could even be thought of as "heavy". Now i listen to death metal and sorts.

It's interesting, I've never really thought about it much before. Music used to be something i occasionaly listened to to pass the time. Nowadays it's a very strange day if i don't listen to music.

I have a few questions regarding live artists/bands. There are loads of bands I haven't actually seen live, but have heard them live somewhere, whether it's youtube, the radio, the TV, etc. Some sound brilliant, but others not so much. So...

What is your favourite artist's live sound?

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

I'll give my own answers, too.

Which /artist band do you think sounds the best live?

Bullet For My Valentine sound brill live. Almost exactly the same as they do on their albums. Also, Fall Out Boy and Enter Shikari sound very good. I'm not a fan of either of their music (well, Enter Shikari aren't that bad) but I do respect their live sound. Although Fall Out Boy may perform well, they do absolutely nothing with the crowd. Very boring...

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

A new-ish international emo-pop/rock band called Madina Lake. I respect them for actually getting up there, though. And they do always look like their having fun, which is always nice to see.

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

Enter Shikari, as I've mentioned before. I don't like the way they change the lead singer's voice in the studio. I prefer the way they sound live.

Which do you prefer, live acts or studio recorded?

Honestly, studio recorded for the most part. Sometimes it can change the sound of the artist for the worst, like I mentioned above. But most of the stuff I've heard sounds brill from studios.
