The only active threads are generally unintelligent ones. They're not necessarily bad threads, but they aren't topics which require a lot of thinking. Remember my threads from two summers ago? The ones which forced you to choose only seven of the fourteen characters, or one person's power? (And why?) We need more threads like that.
Heh, from what I can see, it's not just the FFVI forum that's suffering from this. The worst has to be FFX/FFX-2. I want to post in there sometimes, but I just can't.

Yes, good threads will require some thought. They'll definitely help out activity and I think will make the forum look better. "Make a List/Describe choices on list" threads usually provide intelligent responses. With intelligent responses come intelligent people, usually. I think the best example would be your "Top Ten Video Game Songs of All Time" thread. I know that a lot of people on the board have played FF6, and some appealing threads would attract them to the forum. I know this because I'm one of those people. I'm turned off by most of the FF forums because the threads are either questions that have been answered 10 times over, or as Cesar said, topics that don't require much thought and have the old 20 words or less responses. Anyway, bottom line is, an effort in ALL of the FF forums would help (although we should probably start small) in "fixing" them.

Unfortunately, I'm fresh out of ideas at the moment. Mind you, something might come to me in the next little while, and I'll try it out.

Man, skirting around issues is like a talent for me.

But don't worry, I want to make things better, I just need some time.

EDIT: I see someone's already on the case.

You better believe I'm already on the damn case! The problem is, nobody is responding. I have a firm belief that I scared off any and all n00bs who have read the thread by emphasis on intelligence in responses. They must be all like "Woh! Eye r nt smrt, sew eye knt pohst their!"

Which means it is up to us, the genius vets of the forum, to get that going. So...what are you all waiting for?

    Most likely.

It's a good thread, and I've added in my two cents. I just hope it catches on. There's some serious potential for discussion in there. But, as you said, it'll be up to the vets, 'cause, uh yeah, there's no way them feckin' n00bs are posting. Unless of course, there's the odd exception. I mean, when we were new to the forums, we weren't that stupid, were we?

On an unrelated note, oh snap! Brrrrah brrrrrah!

CP: PoP:SoT. I'm trying to finish the game in under four hours, but right now, it doesn't look like it's happening. Too much time wasted looking for life upgrades, when in most battles, I usually make it through unscathed.

I am officially in LOVE with the Seiken Densetsu series! I beat Secret of Mana last week, which started the liking for the series. I beat Final Fantasy Adventure this evening, which only confirmed that the series is good. I'm now 90 minutes into the third game (Japan only!? Bastards!), and I've decided that there is a VERY good chance of a new Top 10 game on my list before the end of this one. I've read a bit about it, played a bit of it, and I adore the game.

6 characters to choose from, you pick half. Each character has a unique story, as well as a unique set of classes. Two class changes per character per game, each class change containing two options for a total of seven available classes per character. OMFG this has tremendous potential previously unseen by me. I love variety, if you didn't already know that. Adds to the replay value of games by a LOT in my books.

Which is why FFI remains my favorite after all these years!

Okay, I think I'm going to bump this back up. When it's no longer on the first page of threads (under default settings), then there's a problem.

Did everyone die or are people just being as lazy as me? I can see both being true of Zro...

Anyways, I haven't done much in the way of old school gaming lately. I'm stuck on Monkey Island and although, given enough time, I could figure out what to do, I'm now far too addicted to Imperial Glory. The first time I played it I didn't like it too much, but that was, I assume, because I had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm having a blast. Except that I hate Austrians. Stupid Austrians.

I'm still gaming Seiken Densetsu 3, and I am afraid. I fear for my Top 5, because it would seem that this game could easily topple any of those on the list. I have NEVER played a more challenging RPG in my life. Seriously, if you like being on your toes all game long, this is perfect for you. Difficulty + variety + beautiful musical score = OMFG!

    Hmm..

Seems ZRO has gone missing, actually. Last I saw him was on the 15th, since then its been pretty quiet - I'm starting to wonder what the hell he is doing with himself but last time this happened he had a Cable screwup but he usually manages to hop online somewhere.. o_o hmm. Very un-characteristic of him to say the least. If anyone hears anything let it be known in the Cult eh?

I got his cell#, but, maybe he hasnt paid the bills? messages wont send. Hit me up on AIM if you want his cell and maybe one of you can try him.. o_o

But Mike aside, I have been rolling around in all kinds of randomized gaming madness. Final Fantasy 11 (when arent I playing it, lol, like crack), Postal 2, Taito Legends 1/2, Metal Slug 5, Command and Conquer Red Alert/Renegade.. invested in the next season of Battlestar Galactica yesterday aswell, but I need to put more time into some ROMs soon too.
    SPOILER!!:

Aye, I'll be sure to let you know if I hear from him.

As for that message... a couple days ago (when you posted, heh), Sprint's entire text message network went down, so if he has Sprint, then there was a nine hour period when he wouldn't have been able to receive any messages. Hmm.

As for me... I've spent a LOT of time offline lately. Between work, videogames, and a social life, the internet has taken a lower priority; however, the inclusion of much videogaming makes up for this, in my opinion.

    Eh, sorry for worrying everyone. ^^;;;

    Actually had a bit of an issue with the cable bill apparently not bein paid out completely (through no fault of my own, per usual ~.~) and as such, wasn't able to get it turned back on till I managed to scrape together the backpay. <.<; Also, having no access to a ride to anywhere with net access really put me in a bind this time, so eh, yeah. ><; Sorry to worry everyone. ^^;;

On a side note, the offline time has been somewhat good for my playing of other games.

Come on people! What happened to the whole "FFVI Forum revivification" idea? The Phoenix Down has failed to activate! Death! @.@

Am I the only one who will make an attempt?

And the turnout was rather disappointing in that thread! I love the ideas in there so far, but it died down. I'm glad the n00bs stayed out, but WE need to all join in. There are MANY ideas out there for that particular thread, so there is no reason why any of us can only put forth one post in there.

Playing nintendo had melted my brain. *melts* I think I am agreeing to have more posts in this thread, but keep the n00bs away. Technically I am a n00b, but I am a hard working n00b. ^_^ I ahev way to much time at night to post lots. XD. An if I got that statement out of nowhere.....ah well.

cp: Ha HA! I was playing FF6 today! An I enjoyed it for the most part. I have moved up my n00by status a bit. *goes invisible* Also played Killer Instinct SNES style. HaHa! Ever notice Orchids boobs? they are like those orange comes on the side of the road when workers do construction. So keeping to the old school name...I played ^_^ I conquered...I ran from the scary wolves.

Hello everyone. I have been watching this club from afar and decided that I must try to get into this club! I think I would be a great asset because I love old-school video games. Ever since I got my first Atari 2600 and played haunted house I have been addicted.

Still I may be getting a little ahead of myself. Let me introduce myself. My name (as you can see) is Maxpower, it is the name you love to touch. I have been around on TFF for a little while and am probably best known for being a hippy, my sweet van, and liking both nintendo and old school games.

I am not talking about those games that many of the people here consider old school (how can any game that appeared on the playstation be considered old school? Was 1995 really long enough ago to be considered old school?) I am talking about games that were good before graphics and 3-d were all the rage. Bring back the side-scroller!

I love most 8-bit nintendo games but my favorites include Duck Tales, The Legend of Zelda, Little Nemo the Dream Master, Contra, Any Super Mario but ecspecially super mario 3, adventures of Lolo, Duck Hunt, Metroid, Tecmo Bowl, Blades of Steel, Startropics, Punch-out, Final Fantasy, Milon's secret Castle, Kid Icarus, most of the mega man's but the 2nd one was the best, Dragon Warrior, etc. I use to play these games for hours on end when I was younger.

Then one day a new nintendo system came out! I owned a number of other systems (sega master system, atari, commador 64) but in the day video games meant Nintendo, so when the Super Nintendo came out I was very excited! It was then that I really found the joy of the RPG. I was introduced to Final Fantasy II (IV) and I have been playing Final Fantasy games ever since.

I hope that this is enough information to at least get considered for membership in this club. I can answer any of the questions that you have, or post anything else you would like to know.

Well good, because we certainly don't consider three dimensions to be old school here. When categorizing FF titles as old school or new school, FFVII tends to fall right on the line between the two. Yes, it's three dimensional, but it was also an instant classic. We often consider it a legitimate topic of discussion here, but tend to lean toward either random gaming escapades or actual discussions of old school titles.

Now, as I told you in the PM, Dawezy, Dauragon (if he's around), and I will ask you some random questions about various old school titles to test your general old school knowledge. Half of my questions will focus on FFVI, since half of this club IS the Cult of Kefka, after all. Your answers won't be a final decision for your admittance, but showing off your knowledge is always a nice thing.

    1. What is your favorite track from the FFVI OST?
(I know it's not exactly trivia, but I'm curious.)

    2. During the Opera Scene, what are the three choices you have to make as Celes in order to recite the lines properly?

    3. In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Adventure, what color is the special edition cartridge? This one should be pretty easy.

    4. You mention SMB3 is your favorite. What is World 9?

    1. I know that it's probably cliche but I've got to go with Aria di Mezzo Carattere. I hope that is how you spell it because I bought my FFVI soundtrack in Japan.

    2. They are something like, oh my hero......Im the darkness....must I?

    3. That one was easy I have two copies of this cartridge because my battery died in one so I couldn't save things....however they are Gold.

    4. I might be wrong but I think the Lost Level was only included starting with the Super Mario brothers All Star game (the Super Nintendo re-release of all of the NES super mario games) Still I do have both cartridges so I will have to check? Anyhow if you beat all of the 8 first levels of Super Mario Brothers 3 without warping then you continue on to the "Lost Level" world 9. I think that it is called the "Lost Level."

Man I loved Super Mario 3! Did you ever see that movie the Wizard? that was Fred Savages pinnacle, and the reason I bought the power glove.

Well, you got the fourth one wrong, and honestly I wouldn't have cared how you responded to the second one -- the effort was good enough for me.

World 9 in the original SMB3 is also known as the Warp Zone. Any time you go to the Warp Zone, look at your stats on the bottom of the screen. It'll say World 9. A little useless trivia that very few people know, including die-hard fans. I thought I'd ask you all the same.

But, just because you got that wrong doesn't mean I'm going to turn you away. From where I'm sitting, your passion alone should get you in with us, not to mention that great PM you sent me yesterday. I'll go ahead and allow you into the club, but if Dawezy or Dauragon feel like asking you random questions, you should answer them just for kicks.

...that could be a fun activity for us, too, since we're down on things to discuss lately. We could all ask each other random old school questions, of course revolving mostly around the FF titles. Thoughts?

Sure I don't know if this counts but I have always wondered why only the first Final Fantasy game was released in America for the NES and then square did not release another Finalk Fantasy title until Final Fantasy IV in the US. My question is do you really think that America was not ready or interested in RPG's at the time or was Japan just afraid that they weren't ready?

Also many people tend to credit FFVII with making RPG's mainstream. Still I seem to remember FFVI being pretty huge with the people I knew. Do you think that FFVI played a role in helping RPG's become acceptable for release outside of Japan?

FFI wasn't actually that big of a hit here in the States. Sure, later on it became highly popular, but at first, it was a slight flop. Because FFII and FFIII were different, Nintendo and Square decided not to release them Stateside immedately. I think they had plans to do so at some point, but by the time FFI had even made it Stateside, FFIV was in production for the NES.

FFIV was quickly bumped back to a project for the SNES when it came around. When released in America, Square made the decision to rename it as FFII, so the American gamers wouldn't feel "ripped off" like they were missing anything. Poor decision, in my opinion, but it does actually make sense. I'm sure you know all of that already though.

To answer the question you presented... while FFVI did big things for Nintendo fans and helping to spread the love of RPG titles, FFVII really did do it on a much larger scale. The Sony Playstation was such a huge hit that when a FF title came out with the amount of sheer buzz and advertising as it had, it really hooked the crowd and a huge playerbase, which only spread when friends told friends how awesome the game was.

FFVII can't take full credit for jumpstarting the RPG crowd Stateside, but it definitely was largely responsible.

I wonder though if the great reviews FFVI got here in the states helped to assure Square that an RPG could do really well in the states. According to wikipedia even upon its release in 1994, Final Fantasy VI received a positive from most major gaming publications of the time. GamePro gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 score, while Electronic Gaming Monthly granted a 9 out of 10 in its October issue and named it game of the month over Earthworm Jim and Mortal Kombat II. Additionally, Electronic Gaming Monthly later ranked the game ninth in its 1997 list of the 100 greatest console games of all time, and when it was rereleased for the PlayStation, the same magazines rated it 4 out of 5 and 9.5 out of 10, respectively. For their part, Nintendo Power declared the game "the RPG hit of the decade", noting its improved sound and graphics over its predecessors, as well as the game's scope. Moreover, they suggested that "with so much story and variation of play ... fans may become lost in the world for months at a time".

Do you think that these positive ratings and great reception in the States helped Square decide that a project as huge as FFVII would be worth while?

Ah, now your question has a stronger point, and I believe the answer is yes.

Yes, FFVII helped make RPG gaming mainstream.

But yes again, FFVI showed Square what amazing potential they could have in the States if they pushed their games more. With the buzz from the existing FF players combined with the insane advertising they did, it pretty much pushed FFVII into everyone's laps.

Even though I don't personally like the game that much myself, I must admit that it did amazing things not only for the series, but for the genre as a whole.

Well. My copy of Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore for the PS2 just came in today. I played it a bit today. It's pretty fun. Not many characters to choose from, but that's alright. The game is kinda old anyhow.

I've also been playing Baten Kaitos. I'm on the second disc, but nowhere near the end of the game.

    Sorry if I'm ruining your conversation, just thought I'd post here since I haven't for so long. ^^;

Okay here is a strange question. Which system do you usually play FFVI on? I mean I have it on both Super Nintendo and PSX and plan on getting it for the DS when it comes out, but oddly enough I usually prefer to play this game on the SNES for the oldskool feel.

I always leave all my systems hooked to a television just incase I want to play an older game, which means FFVI is always available to play on either the SNES or the PSX. Still because I like the way that the SNES controller feels in my hands and how the game play feels on the SNES I usually play it on that system.

As long as I'm home, SNES. If I'm anywhere else, I play it on my laptop via emulation. I've got one of the greatest tools in the world... a PSX-USB adapter from RadioShack. You can use PS1/2 controllers through your USB port. It's gorgeous, and perfect for emulation of anything SNES age or older, because the buttons match up quite nicely.

So yeah, if I'm ever away from my SNES, my laptop's my safehaven.

One of these days, I need to restart my old OSCoK file on my FFIII cart. Maybe I'll just do it on the emu instead so that I can get screenshots and then we can alter the text to say funny things... yes... YES.

FFVI (SNES and emu so I can play with screenshots)

Oh hell, that should get good. Or ya know, I could just like...send ya all the sprites and we can just put shit together. XD That's always fun too. I wish I could figure out how to replace the sprites in the games tho. If I could do that I could truly customize our games. XD

I know how to go through the various ROM files and alter the information which comes up for them... but going into the deep detail about how to hack these already illegal game rips is probably something I shouldn't discuss. You know, forum rules and whatnot.

Maybe if we were all creating brand new games from scratch for the SNES emulators, then we could talk about it freely (because there's nothing illegal about that). Shame I don't possess the necessary skill to code an entire game from scratch. Shit, if I did, I would have started that ages ago.

Maybe we should make it the lifelong goal of this Cult to create a videogame.

And maybe I'm just off my rocker.

Yeah, we do. I didn't put one in mine because, well, I was discussing the game I was playing. =P

But today is a different day, because I didn't really play anything. I have a huge list of games, and I don't know what to play.

Oh wow, a good ammount of posts have happened since my last.

Welcome maxpower; may I please touch your name?

Anyways, I'm having troubles gents! I've beaten Monkey Island (albeit using more guides then I would have liked. Note to self, don't stop playing an adventure game for more than 5 days, it's impossible to remember what to do) and for some reason, I don't feel like going straight to the second one. Oh right, because I like sound and a lack of it was bothering me. I looked for the third one, but I haven't found it yet, so until I do I have nothing to play and it hurts me (forgot to mention that my playstation and gamecube are at a friend's, so thus rules out a bunch). Maybe I'll fire the sega up soon.

Also, my laptop is coming hopefully early next week (A promise from Dell isn't worth much mind you), so I can finally start installing some games again. Until then though...help!

    CP:
    NOTHING!

    Until now!
