Thread: Where are all the FF Players?

Where are all the FF Players?

Sorry if the title is a little misleading, but seriously...

There are no people in my city who play FF. Either that, or I can't find any of them.

I know one other person who's played FF at my school (out of 1300 kids). Not only that, but I have never, EVER, IN MY LIFE, met a girl who plays FF.

Where are all the FF players?! WTF? We need to have like, a FF Convention for the US FF players. Seriously. Either that, or have one in London and buy me tickets. XD

Does anyone have like, a tight circle of FF player-RL-friends?

    Got it memorized?

A tight circle? No. My circle's pretty loose, actually.
<insert your own joke about whores here>

I know a couple dozen people who are fanatics for the series, and another hundred or so who love the games but aren't so crazy about them. Numbers are not exaggerated, either... I know too many people. I think if you need to find more players, you should start expanding your circle of friends.

Of these couple dozen fanatics, there are three of them sitting in an apartment with me right now, three of them sitting in an apartment just down the street, another two at the store I work at, another seven at the store I used to work at... etcetera.

Get yourself hooked up with a job at a game retailer. You'd be surprised who plays what.

Very few people I know have played or even heard of Final Fantasy - even fewer know what an RPG is. You would have thought that living in a city where all the shops and ads are based, you'd find more people that have heard of Final Fantasy... It sucks in the same way how few people know who Theory are...

My friend Ella has heard of Final Fantasy, but I don't think she has played it. I've shown her a few in-game movies on YouTube, and she has watched a few other FF movies, which I haven't heard of lol, but still...

I seriously know what you're getting at. It's the same with anime at my school =.= You have to start talking about FF or something before they pop up with "you play that too?!"

But outside of school I know people who play the game and we talk about it pretty much here and there and help each other when we're stuck somewhere or want a different way of beating a boss.

    But other than that, I know how you feel ^^;

When I go into video game or comic stores there are people who know about the FF series...Also, there are tons of fantasy/scifi-centered cons where I'm sure there are tons of FF players...I guess you just have to look in the right place? I mean, RPGs aren't often multi-player experiences, so I think we often keep to ourselves. lol

No one where I live has heard of Final Fantasy, except one friend who has seen Advent Children. The only games my friends play are sports (NBS, SFL etc.), Halo and GTA. Seriously. No one knows RPGs even exist. It's depressing.

Most people hear tend to associate the words 'Role Playing' in any sense you use them with geeks and 20 sided dice. Naturally, that means few people I know are into Final Fantasy let alone any RPG franchise of any kind.

It's all about Halo, Guitar Hero and occasionally DDR and the like here. Not the worst games by no means, but hardcore RPG fans seem a minority in a lot of places...

The positive side? The games are always in stock at stores.

    Haha... loose circle.

Uh, I know a fair sum of people who've either played FF or at least know enough about what it is to insult it. I'm pretty sure most people that frequent video games know about Final Fantasy games... They're famous for being extremely long. Not a lot of people can take a game that takes you... 90+ hours to beat.

I'm getting behind on my console gaming anyways - I don't have any of the new generation systems (Wii, Ps2, what have you).. I generally just play World of Warcraft... but I canceled my subscription yesterday... maybe I'm just out of the loop? Poop?

    Nah, I'm just awesome.

I thought I was the only person who likes the series while I was going to high school but found out one of my good friends loved it too, that made me happy. We used to chat about it and it was awesome. Nobody else had any idea what we were talking about. My other friends from school don't really know about it, not many people in my family do either. It doesn't worry me too much, I like it and that is the main thing.

Ya there is no one i know who plays... usually whenever friends pop over real quick and i happen to be playing final fantasy (especially ifs its like number one or two) there lookin at the game i'm playing and are wondering what the hell am i playing and why?... they dont understand it thats all probably thinkin its just a straight nerd game or something... i mean my girlfriend use to bash it because of the graphics and what not but i kept buggin her just to try it and got her hooked... she played seven first and she is currently playing eight... i think some people are just emberassed to admit to playing games like this and keep it to themselves but i dont care lol no matter what friends say about it being whatever they might say

I only know one or two people in real life who play Final Fantasy games or any RPG in general.

It is the same where I live. Most of my friends would rather play Halo or Guitar Hero instead of an RPG. If I had a lot of friends who played Final Fantasy, I probably would have never come to this forum in the first place, so I expect most people here don't know that many Final Fantasy players in rl.

I probably have.. 5 friends who I know in real live not including everyone from here who play Final Fantasy. So not very many. Then again I don't have many friends who like RPGS. They all like shooters xD.

But other then those. No one even knows what I am talking about =[. Most people just play Singstar and Guitar Hero is they play any game at all. It's obvious from what people buy from work too. o.o.

    It's crazy.

Odd, as most of the people I mention it to around here do know it in some way or form. A lot don't realise it's a game series, though.

Me - "Ever played Final Fantasy?"
Them - "You mean like Advent Children?"

So it seems that everybody has some sort of knowledge of Final Fantasy itself, and I know many, many people that have played one game, or a part of one game.

Maybe all you people just aren't looking?

i know what you guys are saying out of all the people i know only 3 know and play FF most of the people that i knew in high school either never played it or are saying it a lame series but it not and it hard to have a conversation about FF if you dont know anyone that play it

I know plenty of people that play FF that live near me. There's Tiger Lily, Froggie, Cilla and others.

I guess I was just lucky to meet these people. ^^

I only know about 2 other people who's played the games, 2 that now want to after listening to me all day and 1 other who hasn't actually played them but knows enough to have a conversation with. However all my other friends have just got used to me sometimes randomly talking about it. That's still not many people - I'm sure there must be a couple more fans out there in my school, I just haven't met them yet.

Back when I first started playing Final Fantasy, in '93, I found myself coming to the same conclusion. No one had ever hear of it. I was the only one that knew it. They only knew what I had told them.

It was probably accurate back then to say that there were very few to no Final Fantasy players in every town. There had been less than a dozen games, and the only RPG type game anyone ever knew was Zelda (of which most only knew of as the cartoon that played on the Friday episodes of the Super Mario Bros. Show.)

However, now, I'd say that's fairly inaccurate. Let me show you the progression of it through my eyes.

In the early days, I was the only one. I told everyone about it, though. All I ever talked about was RPG's: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Secret of Mana(SD2), Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 4 (still numbered as "2" in the U.S.), Final Fantasy 6 (still numbered as 3), Earth Bound, Final Fantasy Adventure (SD1), Final Fantasy Legend 1 - 3, Lufia 1 & 2, Brainlord, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, All Zeldas, and on.... it was always everything I had ever played.

I persisted. I talked about it and immersed myself deeper, in spite of awkward and rude response. It became a ritual to have anyone who visited me play games with me. I made several people beat Secret of Mana with me. I made my friends and family watch the end of Final Fantasy 6. Everyone played Secret of Mana with me at one time or another. Many others watched me play anything from a Final Fantasy to Earthbound. I made my best friends tapes of me reciting the game while playing it, for them to know the story.

I immersed the world around me in it.

Then came Final Fantasy 7. Everyone that played video games in my area knew what it was without me really saying anything. There were hardcore fans popping up everywhere.

It was now easy for me to find someone to talk to about Final Fantasy. There were a few dozen in my high school of 1100 alone. It was even popular enough for me to submit a school newspaper review of Final Fantasy 8. I've found people that play it in more than 60% of the places I've worked. I've had very many meetings in random places and at parties with RPGers. People in my family play these games, as well.

I've also found numerous fans online. It's quite popular now. Look at just Last.fm's list of listeners for the Black Mages. There are forums, groups, websites.. anything you can think of.

All because people talked. (And advertisers advertised.)

I personally see it as that if you talk about RPG's, there are fairly decent odds that you will find a few people that will readily talk about them with you. Especially Final Fantasy.

Just talk to everyone. Who cares if they all think of you as "The Crazy RPG Nerd?" It's worth it to find people to have quality gaming discussions with... if you are a big fan.

3 of my male friends in the town I grew up are Final Fantasy players, but none of my female friends. When I went to university I was quite surprised when 3 out of the 4 girls on my course have played Final Fantasy titles, one being as much of a fan of the game as me. There must be people who play around you, you just probably haven't met them yet. Nobody can guarante that they are alone until they meet the entire lot of people who live where they do! I've felt like the only one who likes "insert whatever here", but I find other people who like that subject sooner or later.

ANYWAY. I knew a guy from college who knew of Final Fantasy, but even then he wasn't bothered about it. I don't mind, I don't really care about it anymore, either. FFIX, yes. FFVIII, sure. FFVI, OYAH. But none of the others. To be honest, it must've been two or three years since I last played a Final Fantasy game. I can't even find my FFIX or FFVIII anymore.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I hang out with anyone that knows Final Fantasy. I do have two other friends and an acquaintance that play Final Fantasy, but all the others aren't even in to gaming (Except for Guitar Hero and MMORPGs). It's kind of sad that when I bring it up every so often, I can't even get the Advent Children reference from people. But I can't be one to talk since I haven't touched a FF more than six months or so.

But within the two of my friends and myself, there are some nice little discussion every now and then. Those three kids are the only ones I know that play the series though. And only one is a hardcore fan (too bad that's not me). Maybe FF isn't as popular as we thought...

  24. #24
Yeah, I hear ya. I pick up a Final Fantasy at least once or twice a month...it's kind of my drug, if you will.

Yep, that's right. I play FFIX instead of drinking. Why? Cuz it's healthier to sit on your butt and enjoy playing a video game than drinking tequila.

...not to mention I'm not old enough to. But anyway...

Final Fantasy = better than any bad substance you could ever use. Period.

Me and my mates all play Final Fantasy or at least some of them, Me Raider and Loner-kid at least. Most 'gamers' dont tend to play RPGs anymore, people are more into 1st person shooters which are all about the same thing just differnt weapons, graphics maps and gameplay. Infact the year at school im in practicly condems people who play MMORPG and RPGs as they think 1st preson shooters are so much better

Let's go into the "archives" in "Washington D.C." and find out how people "masturbated" in the "roaring 20's."

Here is an idea, I did this when I was questioning how my Resident Evil fanatics there where in Tulsa. You might have to check online. But buy a shirt that has something to do with the series and wear it everywhere. Doesn't have to be something flashy, all mine is, is a plain black t with the umbrella logo imprinted on it. The first few times I wore it out in public I went to real high traveled areas, such as the mall and the riverwalk. Just watch the exspressions on peoples faces and you will be able to eventualy pick up on who actually plays the games. Keep it simple but reconisable (like something from VII). Any which way it goes good luck with that.

I have managed to find a few FF players here in town and convinced a few to jump ship to the darkside. haha All together I think I have only found around 30 people, mainly people my own age.

I know what you mean. I only know about 6 kids who have played Final Fantasy. Most I know that play it Love it. Of course, I do have the nerdiest friends in our whole school. *Shrugs*

I guess its peer pressure to play stuff like Halo and Gears of War and laugh off Rpgs.
Who knows. I have kids at school who say they love Video Games and Video Game culture in general and I ask them whats Old-School to them. They say Halo 1. I ask them what Chrono Trigger is. They say no idea.

Seriously, schools need to start game clubs for RPGS as most of them aren't mindless shooters.

I try to not think of it as some huge trend (in which it is, nationally) and just take it as a personal interest. I know some people who has play/know about at least on series of it. In fact, my friend has my GBA SP with my FFIV !!!

Most of my friends into basketball games and other ones that I just fade off of. They at least know what RPG means though.

Even tho I play it more then your usual kind of person, to me I feel teaches and influences something about yourself. FFVII being mine but that's just me >,< XD !!!

So it seems that everybody has some sort of knowledge of Final Fantasy itself, and I know many, many people that have played one game, or a part of one game.

Maybe all you people just aren't looking?
    life is hard remember that
