What is the plural of roof?

So I was thinking about this today when I was talking about more than one roof. I think it's rooves, as weird as it sounds, because of other -f words that take -ve in the plural:

    Wife > Wives
    Leaf > Leaves
    Dwarf > Dwarves
    Half > Halves
    Hoof > Hooves
    Loaf > Loaves
    Calf > Calves

Roofs also sounds weird. But I'm still not sure -- so what do you use?

Re: What is the plural of roof?

I just checked my dictionary (the big one that can be used to give people a concussion if used correctly), and the plural of roof is "roofs". However, it can be pronounced as both "roofs" and "rooves". Both are fine and accepted throughout the English-speaking community. But yes, it does sound weird either way. Probably because you don't normally talk about more than one roof in casual conversation.

As for what I use, it has always been "roofs". I had to memorize the dictionary for spelling bees and stuff, and if you don't pronounce it correctly, you normally don't spell it correctly during competition.

I can positively say I've never had to use the plural word for a roof in my entire life.

I use rooftop more than roof, to be honest, but I would say roofs. It's one of those weird idioms.

The real question though, is the plural of milf. Just think about it

Re: What is the plural of roof?

There's actually no wrong answer here. But, if you look in your average dictionary, there is no entry for 'rooves' anywhere. It actually comes up as a spelling mistake with spell check. Removing the second o makes it another word altogether.

BUT: Here's what google has to say:

    noun /ro͞of/  /ro͝of/
    roofs, plural; rooves, plural
While neither are really wrong, it all lies in personal preference. I like rooves.

Re: What is the plural of roof?

People that use dictionaries to answer a simple question are cheaters. Besides, what the hell are people doing with dictionaries? It's the future. Books are so last century.

Anyway, the plural of "roof" is obviously "roofus." I will use this in a sentence. I put shingles on the roofus of my two homes, so that I wouldn't be the only thing in my life with a case of shingles.

Wouldn't it make more sense to call it a roofcap? After all, a roof is something that caps off the walls of a building.

I'm a 'roofs' person. It sounds more doggy that way.

Re: What is the plural of roof?

So, in order to answer this question I simply typed both possibilities in this reply box here. "Rooves" is underlined in red, meaning it's either misspelled or doesn't exist. "Roofs", however, is not underlined. Thus, my conclusion that the correct answer is "roofs".

@Kyra Google is my bitch, and she's not always right. I've tried training her, but even my bitch slaps don't seem to work. Apparently.

@Clint Eastwood That's a good point, you know. "Rooftop" implies that one is talking about the actual top part of the roof, whereas "Roof cap" implies that the roof is the cap on the walls of a building.

PS - Thank you, Alpha, we're all now analyzing words, let's do profanities and/or obscenities next.
