    Ultimate Campaign Settings

What's your favorite Fantasy Campaign Setting, and why? What are your favorite books or games within that world?

I've listed some top ones here, but there are a ton. I'd be esspecially interested in learning about some lesser known or lesser used worlds.

Also if you're a fan of any of these worlds, and esspecially The Realms, come check out and join The Citizens of Abeir-Toril club here http://thefinalfantasy.net/forums/cl...en-realms.html

The only one out of these I know well is Azeroth. I watched The Hobbit (1970s cartoon), and that's what I'd call my knowledge on Middle Earth.

Middle Earth, when you're not following hilarious hobbits around, seems kind of boring. And gross.

I'd much rather be in Azeroth in Stormwind, so I can be a hot human living amongst all these other races. Of course, there's no atmosphere like Orgrimmar in the evening when all the torches are lit up.

I know Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings, Simarillion and Hobbit, but for campaigns I know Warhammer sort of. I play Fantasy Warhammer so I guess its The Old World for me, though I do love Middle Earth.

But as I understand it Warcraft was originally Blizzard's license product of Warhammer, but the company that owns Warhammer pulled the license. So Blizzard went ahead and did their own thing that is pretty much based on the Warhammer universe, but far enough away not to be breaking copyrights and such.
Curious? There's no limits but your own imagination.

Warcraft had such great lore. It's just too bad I didn't get a chance to know it better.

Eberron is probably my favorite as far as campaign settings go (in the context of role-playing). It feels almost like the antithesis of Forgotten Realms. Forgotten Realms just had way too much going on, most of which was completely inconsequential. Its world was huge and that lead to a lot of flexibility, but it was very hard to distinguish much of anything in it. Like that gigantic pantheon that I knew very little of. Everything was so epic that it actually became the norm, making anything below that rather boring.

Eberron is pretty small in comparison, but the locales and major threats are defined well. The background gives great detail but intentionally leaves key points blank so that you could fill them in with your own unique twist if you so desire. And overall, it's just a great alternative to standard fantasy and give most of the staples a good twist. I just love the flavor. And really, it's one of the few settings you can play in and feel like you're actually doing something amazing even if you're only level 5.

You're all crazy. The ultimate campaign setting takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Elves and Dwarfs began to bore me quite some time ago. Since, I've dabbled with custom ones ranging from post-apocalyptic, fallout-esque worlds to 16th century Europe to Raccoon City. I did co-create a Warcraft campaign with a buddy, but that was years ago before any official adaptations were available. Star Wars still provides the most opportunities though. Plus there's Jedi.

Middle Earth is a tough one. I wish there some more adaptations written within that world. Personally I think the entire background, the ancient details concerning why the elves and dwarves were created by the gods, why evil came into the world and that whole story is excellently portrayed.

I can see why somebody might call it boring, but think of it as having more purpose. There are only 5 wizards. That's it, and they were sent by the gods. There won't be others. And there is a undefined source of magic, but it's limited. It's not like forgotten realms where everybody can learn magic if they want. It just makes having power a special thing, and makes a person who has it very important within the world.

Plus there's a lot of mystery surrounding the geography that we never see, like the people of the East and of the South. It's just a very magestic setting. I really wish there would be a push to write more stories within it.

@ Solider - By the way, is Eberron set within Abeir-Toril? I think it might be. It's dungeons & dragons right? I was trying to find it on a map, but couldn't see a continent on the world called that, but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

Eberron is the name of the planet itself if I recall right. As you have probably already guessed from that, it's a campaign setting separate from all of Forgotten Realms. A bit after 3.5e was released it became one of the more popular ones. You should check it out!

I hope I'm not somehow being toyed with... hahaha.

Loaf,,,, you're favorite campaign setting is your own? Actually I think that's pretty cool. I write myself and I always have to draw out a map of where exactly things are taking place. I've yet to map out an entire continent. I've only gotten 3 novels written (none-published) (yet) but as I do, and if it fits, I merge the worlds together and gradually expand the map. Curious to see how yours is going. Do you have some things drawn out you can share?

Got nothing so far, my friend does the drawings and right now he is saving up money to get some tools so his drawings can be done on his comp. Whenever we get some pictures I'll be sure to post some.

I've only heard of Abeir-Toril (Forgotten Realms), Middle-Earth (The Lord of the Rings) and Azeroth (World of Warcraft), but only liked Abeir-Toril.

I don't like The Lord of the Rings. I can't stay awake during the films, and I'm not even going to think about reading the book. I've never played Warcraft, but I've heard of the world it's in.

So Abeir-Toril it is. I played Demon Stone and Baldur's Gate (can't remember which one - it was at my uncles house), and have yet to read the novels.

Unknown you should definately join the club listed in the first post then. And I've got a group under my name. If you've played some games or read any of the Realms books I'd love to have you review them.

And you should check out the Hobit at least. The LOR books are pretty intense, although I really liked them. But the HObit is a fun story that gives you a good taste of Middle Earth. Check it out.
