    the tramp stamp

So yeah I know we have had quite a few convos here about tattoos but I figured I would open about one specific location of the most female popular tattoo.

There is a lot of bias when it comes to the tattoo's that some females decide to get on their lower back section, yeah right above the buttock.

So what are your opinions of this style of tattoo?

    Is it something you dig?

Is it something you would get (if you are female and don't already have one)

I hate the term the "tramp stamp". I am not a fan of it and would never refer to a woman with a tattoo in that region as a tramp. The only reason I titled this thread the way I did was to grab some attention.

Personally, if done right I think a tat in that area is sexy as hell. I personally don't see it as bad or as a marker for a woman to be slutty.

    What are your thoughts?

What is the point of getting a tattoo in that location, other than something to aim at after doin it doggystyle? It's just a trashy place to get a tattoo imo.

Not to mention I haven't seen a decent tattoo in that area ever. It's always some shitty tattoo.

No, it doesn't make you a slut if you have one. But if you're already a slut, you might have a tramp stamp.

like meier mentioned, "if done right" they're fine. the problem is, is that there are so many out there that are tribal-esque/half assed. and it has nothing to do with the location its just a bad tat with a lack of creativity. if your going to get a tat, for the love of all that is mighty, put some thought into it. its going to be there for the rest of your life.
on a more positive note, ive seen some lower back tats that looked down right amazing.

    Is it something you dig?
    not so much.

Is it something you would get (if you are female and don't already have one)

    absolutely not....it wouldn't fit who i am.

I'm not a fan of the stamp on a tramp. Like chad said, I have yet to see some cool design on there. I would never get a tattoo there myself, and I would never tell my loved ones to do so either.

I think the area is a trashy area. There are plenty of other places that make more sense that the lower back. Why would you get a tattoo just to hide it? When you're showing people you gotta show off that area. I dunno.

    Just why there?

And no, I have never seen a good one. It's always some uncreative shit.

So you are saying the lower back is trashy on a female? what makes that area trashy?

Sorry I am just trying to get some input here.

I find it to be a very procative spot myself and if there is a tat there that is done nicely could accent the area.

    Bravo pun!

I don't have an opinion on them.

However I will say that they seem to invariably point to a given area. It's that suggestion which makes people associate them with 'tramps'.

As an aside, what is meant by the term 'tramp'? Is it like someone who is promiscuous? Or a prostitute? I've only ever heard it on American television programmes, and we just call prostitutes 'prostitutes', given that it's a legal profession (complete with labour union) in New Zealand.

correct, it has to deal with promiscuity. Since we're on the subject of the world's oldest profession, how difficult would it be for a male foreigner to break into the prostitute business? Just curious

    Re: the tramp stamp

I've got one there, never got it with the intention of giving some chap having summat to look at while banging me from behind either

I'd never even heard of this term til recently, nor do I really understand it

I just like tattoos, it's a fairly large one, and I already have one on my left shoulderblade, so it was the next logical place to put it, I'd link a picture, but the general idea is IVE NEVER SEEN A DECENT TATTOO IN THAT AREA so I'm a tad wary about trying to sway that opinion with my own design xD (it's a pair of wings btw) I'd also like to point out, it's soething that had a LOT of thought go into it, I wasn't about to just get some little design on a whim (2 bloody years infact)

I suppose I could just conform to the stereotype and shag everything that moves.... mind you, if someone approached me on the basis that I had a tatoo there and thought he was gunna get an easy lay, he'd have another think coming

edit* actually, why do I give a **** what people even think? *I* like it and that's all that matters *gallops around on high horse*
    http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...tattoos002.jpg
yeah I've got bum wings *folds arms, what o it* they have meaning for me, and like I said, the only place I could fit them

It varies by the person. In general I think tattoos only work on so many types of people, especially the tramp stamp. Alot of the time it doesn't look good on people, but some can pull it off. There's a surfer chick who comes in and is real chill that has one and it just fits her personality. Then there's some people have it who have one and it looks wrong, like the people that try too hard. And then some who have it are sluts, with a short skirt and the whale tale sticking out their back, I don't think they're going to church. But hey it's there life.

It can be sexy but it can also come off as trashy. It's all about presentation.

You can set up a brothel provided its not too close to a school. I'm pretty sure that's the only restriction, but most of them are in light-industrial areas (sort of like, mechanics and car yards), because residents generally aren't too happy with the thought of living next door to one (could you imagine the noise!?). There's one about five minutes from my house, opposite the gym, called 'Paris'. It could do with a more original name, IMO.

So if you want, sure. But it'd probably be more profitable to be the pimp business owner, rather than the prostitute. Though even then most of the owners are female.

    Re: the tramp stamp

I wouldn't call someone who gets a tattoo on the lower back a tramp, but at the same time I get what Che's saying. If you think about it (fully clothed) no one is going to see the tattoo unless you walk around in extremely short shirts or you walk around with your ass crack showing... or naked. If I wanted a tattoo, I would put it somewhere it could be visible at some point.

For example the shoulder, or ankle. You can see just enough of it in those locations if you were wearing maybe a tank top or blouse or shorts and flip flops for the ankle.

Exactly. Isn't the whole idea behind getting a tattoo to be unique and have your own style? Yet you put it in the same spot everyone else does. Couldn't you find a better one? Rofl.

Also @ Lily, why didn't you put wings on your back? You put them on your lower back. No animal has wings that are just above their butt. I just don't understand the point.

You're probably going to take offense to what I said, but I don't mean to be mean about it. I'm just curious as to why you made your decision.

because i already said I had a tattoo on my shoulder?

I wasn't getting them because I wanted to get the wings of an animal, and that they don't have wings there. I just wanted them, that was the only place they would fit, so there they went.

There's alot of room to work with on your back, maybe that's why some people get them there, idk. I didn't think about the place I was getting them, just that I wanted them and they had to fit somewhere. I want more added, make it larger, so it's not quite just...stuck in the middle like that, but me being me, that'll take me afew more years to decide what to have done

Personally, I'm an artistic person by nature, and if I had the means, I'd be covered in tattoos, much to my mothers dismay, but it's my body

Also, no offense taken. I suppose it's always gunna cause abit of controversy, am alright with that

    Re: the tramp stamp

So just because it is hidden now makes it an unworthy spot to have a tattoo? This logic makes no sense at all.

There are a lot of people that have hidden tattoos, chest, upper arms, upper back, legs, hips, ankles, feet, stomach, mid back, shoulders, and even the neck if hair is long enough to cover it. So what makes the lower back any more trashy then any of those other areas?

I only titled this thread the way I did because I think the terminology would catch some attention and bring the issue into light. Also I am not trying to be a prick by questioning, just trying to gain an understanding of perspective.

As for a person that gets a tat in this area, I don't think it is a marking of a tramp. I know plenty of people that have lower back tattoos that are not tramps then chicks with out them that are.

I like tattoo's along the lower part of the back, especially hena style or flowery ones, I don't like the man style tats like a heart wrapped in barbed wire or skulls, doesn't matter what part of the body they are on, I think they look awful and too butch to be on a woman.

I really want to get a lower back tattoo, but I heard it hurts alot down there so thats putting me off a little bit.

    Re: the tramp stamp

The tramp stamp is just something that society has labeled a tattoo in the lower back area as, I don't think it is trashy at all because I too have seen some that are very well done Meier. What makes it trashy to me is if a girl always wears a shirt that is short in the back or ties it up just so that you can see it.

I don't think that getting a tattoo means that you have to show it off either because there are plenty of instances where whether you are interviewing for a job or meeting people that you want to impress that might not think a tattoo is professional or moral and why offend people that you want to impress or at a job? I want to get a tattoo in the future across the top of my back, that way I can still look like a professional even if I have short sleeves on but still have it because I want it for me.

    Exactly.

It's not just the area that makes it a "tramp stamp", it's the style. Lily's tat isn't really a tramp stamp, I'd say, because it wouldn't be completely visible by simply having low-cut jeans and a shorter shirt on. Part of it would be, sure, but it's not designed to draw attention to her ass, like most tramp stamps are. It's the same with cleavage tattoos -- most women that get ink done right above, or on top of, their breasts don't do it because they want people to know how artistic and original they are, they do it because they want to draw attention to their tits.

And that's the only thing I really don't care for. Some, when tastefully done and on the right girl, can be pretty damn hot. But the entire point of a tramp stamp is to draw the eyes to the lower back / upper ass region. On top of that, to show it off, a girl has to wear pants that show part of her ass and/or shirts that show a few inches above her waistband.

It would be like a guy getting a tattoo on his torso somewhere and wearing baggy cut-off sleeveless shirts with giant armholes to show it off.

Are some sexy as hell? Of course. Are most simply trashy-looking? In my opinion, yes. Is there a better location for a tattoo, with more style and originality -- not to mention to appear less like a slut? Undoubtedly.

I used to like it long ago but then I started to associate it with a certain type of girl, I guess. I'm not saying having a tattoo like that makes you a slut, but for some reason it's associated with it.

It really depends on what kind of tattoo it is, which goes for any place you get it. If it is tasteful, I can see how I would find it attractive.

When my cousin was 15 she got a tramp stamp body spray tattoo crap. Since that day I predicted her future. I was pretty close, but it's better then what I thought.

For me? I honestly haven't seen a good looking tattoo on anyone's lower back. It would rarely look good.

    Re: the tramp stamp

I always thought of it as the "peek a boo" tattoo. So if someone moves a certain way you catch a glimpse of it... but unless the person was either a) naked or b) in a bikini then chances are you don't see it.

I don't get how its trampy, tbh. As mentioned earlier there are lots of tattoos that are covered, how is a tattoo on the top part of a woman's breast less/more trampy than the small of her back?

I think society has deemed that if you get a tattoo there, then you must be of questionable morals. I think a person's actions would be a better gauge of how straight their moral compass points. But then again, we also live in a society where we base everything off looks, so silly me for thinking we should judge people by how they act, rather than how they look.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know that generally people don't, and most times people don't even realize that they are doing it. But still. For the record, I don't have any tattoos. I never liked anything enough that I was willing to commit to. Now that I have my daughter I've been toying with the idea of getting her name, but its still an idea.

    Re: the tramp stamp

I don't get all the fuss over a tramp stamp, last time I checked behavior, personality and action determine if you're a slut or not, a measly tattoo has nothing to do with it, and thinking that it does is just stupid imo. I have a friend who has a tattoo on her lower back, and a nice one I'll have to say, she's the last person I would call slutty or anything like that. As for do I find it attractive, meh, tattoos in general rarely impress me.

    Re: the tramp stamp

Honestly, it's a tattoo. Big deal. Instead of pointing someone out for their tattoo and judging them on it, look at the damn tattoo and admire the work that went into it.

A woman's back has a larger surface area to put a larger tattoo on; having a large tattoo over the breasts or across the stomach is considered less attractive because the roundness of the boobs would distort the art too much, and it's a bit "slaggy" when you have to have your boobs hanging out over the top just to show part of it. Also, boobs are pretty enough without a tattoo on most women - why the **** you'd get a tattoo there is beyond me.

Also, women could get a tattoo there for many reasons. My aunt used to (and still does) jazz and street dancing, and a lot of the outfits she's worn DO show off the stomach and lower back areas. For one piece she had to do, she and the other dancers had a fake tattoo placed along the lower back, because the choreographer didn't want too much bare skin for when they filmed. She actually liked the way the tattoo looked, and had a real one done there. It wasn't to enhance or draw attention to anything - she just liked the design, and it wouldn't do anywhere else.

Personally, I don't want a tattoo. I can't think of something that I'd like to get. If I do get something, I'd want something small done just above my ankle.

    Re: the tramp stamp

I just don't find lower back tattoo's all that appealing. Unless of course a chick has a tat of a target that way you have something to hit.

One of my friends who is a guy has a lower back tattoo. It is a shamrock. The tat itself looks alright, it is just the fact that he got a lower back tattoo. Come one what guy does that.

The term tramp stamp is ridiculous. There are women I have seem with a lower back tat that are not even remotely tramps. My high school english teacher. She was like 45 had 6 kids, and a husband, certainly not a tramp. My mom has one, I don't approve of course, and before anyone calls my mom a tramp f*ck you...lol
