    Time to hit the books.

Question for all the students here on TFF, how do you study? Do you have a certain place where you like to study... library, at home perhaps? Anything particular that helps you study better?

I'm the type of person who gets distracted rather easily, so much so that I don't even have my mobile phone with me when I'm about to study, in other words I require as peaceful and isolated place as possible which in my case is usually the attic. I'm not really fond of libraries since I like to repeat what I've learned out loud. If possible I also avoid group studies, when you have friends as mine in most cases you get barely anything done. I also stick to specific time, never early in the morning and never ever at nights.

I use to like to listen to music in my room while I was studying. Until recently when I started my new coursework I realised how much concentration was required to fully understand what was in front of me. Now I require absolute silence when I'm trying to study otherwise much like you, I will get distracted and lose my train of thought.

Back when I was in school I enjoyed studying in the library it was nice, and quiet, and very few people bothered me. Others places were my bedroom of course. Can't beat being alone in your room with a room book, you even can rub one out if you get to stressed.

I like studying in the library. The silence and being around books somehow allows me to focus. I can hardly study at home because I'm surrounded by the television, video games, manga, computer, comfortable couch, food, etc. If I want to study at home I'll have to turn off the lights and turn on my lamp with nothing but the sound of my AC running.

I have my final final tomorrow and I'm home free!

Re: Time to hit the books.

Living with five other family members makes it pretty hard to study in peace when i'm at home. Usually i'll study on my bed with my book, laptop, etc on my lap or on the bed in front of me. If i'm at uni there's a little balcony outside each floor which I sometimes go to. Only before 10 though because everyone else has a similar idea and begins to flock there. Other than that, there's a group of picnic tables on a grassy patch where I go to study in a relatively quiet inviroment when all else fails. I'm actualy sitting there right now, having just done a test. It's pretty peaceful but i'm open to the elements in winter.

I study best with my horde of brothers around. I say the words out loud and if they don't care, they leave! (MAGIC!) but sometimes some stuff interests them, and I can get a few tidbits of useful knowledge into those hard boiled eggs that rest on their necks.

Re: Time to hit the books.

I usually work in my room with my music on, depending on what I'm studying for. This year I haven't really had much to study for, I've had more practical work instead. Not a lot of revising. If I'm doing photography work I like to listen to music with my laptop but if I'm doing artwork I need to not be on the laptop, I need to be in the zone with art. I prefer to do artwork in my actual art class, so I try to spend free lessons in there to do extra work. I get more work done with music in my ears as well I find, because then I'm less likely to engage in conversations with people.

I listen to drum and bass. It gives me a sense of urgency and a rhythm to absorb as much information as possible at a certain pace, but still make it to the finish without wasting a bunch of time.

I stream Bloodborne, FFXIV, and occasionally other games.

Re: Time to hit the books.

It totally depends on what I'm doing. I hate the idea of going someplace else to get work done, and I've always hated it, so the library was out of the picture.

When I wrote papers, the more distractions, the better. I'd have the TV on to whatever, and sometimes I'd even have music playing.

For reading, I'd usually have nothing on, or some music. The TV would cause me to look up too often and I'd lose my place.

For actual studying and reviewing, depending on how important it was, I'd have either the TV on or music. I kinda always need something else going on.

Even when I'm working on something now, I usually need music to be playing in the background.

Do you ever think about going back and finishing it? I mean, you were so close. Having a BS is a really good thing to have. A lot of people don't.

Re: Time to hit the books.

I still have to study occasionally, though I am not a student anymore. My test to renew my translator certification was last week, so I studied the best way I knew how.

Lots of telenovelas, music videos, and foreign news reports!

Seriously though, study time was my favorite time of the day. I could learn at my own pace (normally about two or three chapters ahead of the rest of the class). Whether it was in my room at my desk, or at the kitchen table helping by brother and sister with their homework.

Usually I don't like distractions while studying; but with my work, studying requires what I used to consider distractions (TV, music, etc.). It is a big change from what I grew up doing, that's for sure. But I wouldn't want to go back to studying that way. Unless it was for a subject that wasn't connected to the languages area.

One thing I learned while studying for finals is to not study where you sleep, so don't study while laying in bed or on a couch you take naps on. I say try to find an area where you can feel free to move about and talk to yourself.

An important thing to do while studying is if you reach a point where you feel like you can't read another word, just take a break. Watch a show, take a walk, or even surf the net. Then come back to studying.

If you have a public speaking or monologue for acting due, one thing to try is tossing a ball back and forth with someone as you recite it. It helps you stay loose and get you out of your head and focus on talking.

Always stay hydrated while studying and I find I do my best if study for a while, take a break, and then switch back to studying.
