    Stand Up!

    Comedians that is.
Who do you like? Who is your favorite? Who do you not like?

    Personally I love
    Donald Glover
    Louis CK
    David Chappelle
    Kevin Hart

I use to like Dane Cook in Jr. High, but now I really can't stand him. Anything, his movies, his stand up, ugh. Its all just noise in my head.

    Re: Stand Up!

Dane Cook's a douche, but I still think he's funny as hell. My best friend and I are planning on acting out his "I don't even know about jelly" skit in a grocery store. His car alarm act was pretty good too.

I was introduced to Lisa Lampanelli a few months ago and I don't think I've laughed quite that hard at a comedian before. She's one of those that you can't be easily offended to appreciate her humor; she's awesome.

There was a black woman I saw on Logo I think...or maybe it was Comedy Central I'm not sure, my friend had her on. Her act was pretty damn good too, I'll have to google research some of her lines and edit or report back with names. I know she made a lot of **** references.

Eddy Murphy was funny back in the 80s.

Dave Chappelle's great, as is John Leguizamo.

I like Billy Connolly and Michael McIntyre. I also think Ricky Gervais' stand-up isn't bad, but I hate most of the shows he's done. "Extras" was so over-rated, I don't get why everyone was so crazy about it.

Oh, and Peter Kay as well. Back in my university days my housemates and I watched a DVD of his, and one lad (from Yorkshire) didn't think I'd get his Northern English humour, (I'm from South East London, on the way back there as we speak) but I laughed harder than any of them. I like him because all the stuff he comes out with is funny because it's true!

    Re: Stand Up!

I really like Mike Birbiglia and Jim Gaffigan. Mike Birbiglia seems like he's "one of us," because he's awkward and humble, but also seems to be intelligent. I love self-deprecation, and he's full of it.

So does Jim Gaffigan. He talks about being lazy and eating food all the time. Also, makes a lot of funny religious jokes that don't offend me.

I've heard some Dana Carvey and some George Carlin that I've liked too. Also some Louis CK. But Jim and Mike are my go to guys. Anyhoo...

    Re: Stand Up!

Carlin for sure. He was just an angry, hilarious man who loved to push the envelope and call people on their bullshit.

Chappelle was awesome too, with his ridiculous stories. I also admire the balls he had to talk about race like he did, and still appeal to everyone.

I like Louis CK as well, but not so much his show on FX. It's a little too depressing for me, but his standup is funny.

There's also Jim Gaffigan, with his lazy, awkward humor, and one of my new favorites, John Caparulo. Just really funny, blue collar guy who has some ridiculous stories

    Re: Stand Up!

I used to adore Carlos Mencia, still love his old bits, though recently his jokes became all too familiar and repetitive. Dave Chappelle's the best if you ask me, I also love Louis CK, Katt Williams, and some of the old shit from Eddie Murphy.

    LOL, grodey.

Also, Sommore is the comedian's name I couldn't think of earlier. She was on the Queens of Comedy tour; it's a movie too apparently. Good stuff right there.

    Re: Stand Up!

haven't really been taken by US comedians at all, imo they're just a step behind the Europeans. Oh! apart from Stewart Francis! absolute legend!

Id recommend looking up these people; they dont get that much attention
    -David Mc Savage
    - Jason Byrne
    - Dylan Moran

Big names that I think are just incredible:
    - Billy Connolly
    - Russell Brand
    - Frankie Boyle
    - Tim Minchin

Oh, and women cant do comedy,.. well they can but they're shit at it.

    Re: Stand Up!

I love Michael McIntyre, I could watch him all day. My favourite jokes from him are the ones about Scotland, namely these two. This one is also really funny.

Lee Evans is another one I really like, Russel Howard, Dara O'Briain, Steven Fry. There is this Canadian comedian named Tom Stade, and I've only ever seen one of his stand ups before, and it's hilarious! Here it is.

Mitch Headburg has been dead for years and his jokes still get me tearing up laughing.
I have never laughed so hard from any other comidian.
Dane Cook comes close, but if you can't see him, youre missing half the comedy.

    Re: Stand Up!

The only stand-up comedian I watched and actually liked was Louie Anderson. His impressions of his dazed mother crack me up every time ("There's more sweet potatoes in the garage"), though his electrically incompetent, exaggerating veteran father is also hilarious: "Throw that jello out on the lawn!"

    Re: Stand Up!

Stand up used to be a big hobby of mine. I used to visit local comedy clubs all the time and I saw plenty of the big UK well-known comedians live. Here's a list and not in any particular order that I've seen live:

Dara Ó Briain - Dara was brilliant. Saw him in Salford, and the Lowry had a power cut when he was due to come - ad-libbed 20 minutes and shared a laugh with us all in the dark. But I've always just liked his humour full-stop - very traditionally Irish and observant. Nothing too garish, too below-the-belt, but still a little out-there, enough so as not to be mainstream.

Rob Brydon - We paid £15 for a ticket so we didn't expect much (was in the whole Islands in the Stream Gavin and Stacey bit) but was actually very very good. It was a bit of a warm up gig in the Palace Theatre in Manchester and we were sat in the gods so we could see all the themes he had planned because he had them written on paper on the floor. But bizarrely Peter Kay made a cameo on stage to sing with him at the end. All told, very good and surprisingly cheap.

Peter Kay - Who hasn't? Saw him in 2003 for the 'Mum Wants a Bungalow' Tour (the DVD for that one is Live at the Bolton Albert Halls) and it was everything you expected - perfectly pitched observational humour. I saw his gig at the O2 Arena, the Tour That Didn't Tour recently. A few strong laughs but I think he's getting lazier now. Jokes about Sky+ are a bit.. old frankly.

Bill Bailey - What's not to love about Bill? He was my comedy idol growing up, from Comedy Store 10-min spots to Bewilderness and Part Troll. We also saw him at the Palace, before he started a nationwide tour and of Aus and NZ, it was a mix of material from Tinselworm and what would make up Dandelion Mind and it was quite possibly one of the best gigs I've been to. Because the Palace is quite dense in layout it was surprisingly acoustic so it was fairly intimate (that and we were on the eighth row from the front at the bottom!) and he also deviated a little to explain why he left Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Turned out he didn't really get along with Simon Amstell as much as was portrayed on the show, and he didn't agree with the changes to the format that was going on. Good on him for having principles, although I like Simon a lot. And the show has become rather disjointed and pointless these days..

The Mighty Boosh (Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, featuring Rich Fulcher, Michael Fielding and Dave Brown) - I love the Boosh. It's definitely an acquired taste and not to everyones' liking but I get the surrealism and the random associated with it. But I didn't watch/listen from the start. When the tv show hit BBC Three in 2004 I dismissed it, hadn't listened to the years of radio show broadcast beforehand and it was only the second series finalé that I actually got into it - and it is GOOD. The team are currently all off doing their own thing: Noel has his own series and NMTB, Julian is doing all sorts of theatre work and Dave and Michael are DJs. I know Rich is still dabbling and may be collaborating with Matt Berry again for another series of Snuff Box. I hope that comes off. Oh, the tour I saw was the Future Sailors one but I was quite ill at the time and didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. But I'd had the tickets for 13 months so there was a lot of hype!

Steve Coogan - An odd one to see live, I'm sure you'll agree but it was basically a prepared sketch show on stage. You had all the characters you'd expect - Paul and Pauline Calf, Tommy Saxondale and of course, the eternal Alan Partridge. Definitely a mixed show and Partridge takes up a half of it (the good half). Not a cheap night at the Apollo either frankly at £45 a ticket but to see Alan live made up for it.

Al Murray (The Pub Landlord) - I saw Al in 2008, can't for the life of me remember the tour but I know I was at the Apollo for it, practically front row. I used to love his abrasive style but now I realise there's little difference from one year to the next and it's a real shame because, he's actually a very intelligent man. I enjoyed that night though, if simply because it wasn't long after the markets collapsed and he managed to wind up bankers in the audience which let's face it, is always a laugh.

Roy 'Chubby' Brown - The less said the better. The ticket was bought for me and I had to go. I never wanted to though.

Mick Ferry, Paul Sinha and Rob Rouse - These might sound a little more obscure to you but I saw all three on a Comedy Club billing in Manchester and I should have been paying THEM money. Mick's a legendary Manc compère and his wit has always been razor sharp but sadly it's never really translated to solid TV time. A shame really.
Fans of the TV show 'The Chase' in the UK will know Paul Sinha as the white-suited Indian fellow with the sarcasm and the faux-nastiness. His stand-up routine is actually so far removed from that persona, in actual fact he makes light of being a gay Indian in a very traditional family and his passion for quizzes. A warm, funny guy.
Rob Rouse HAS been on TV quite a bit, in various forms and mostly in sitcoms, but he topped the bill that night. A fairly average routine but we were all a bit merry and couldn't have cared less. Well worth a fiver to see them all!

I've seen more but they might not be considered famous enough, and will likely just be random names to you!

I've seen plenty of televised stand ups though, and I'll have seen all these comedians' performances unless otherwise stated:
Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Patrick McGuinness' 2006 and 2008 ones, the Ricky Gervais set, Chris Addison, Jason Manford, Dave Spikey, Simon Amstell, Sarah Millican, Milton Jones, Lee Mack, Dave Gorman, Frankie Boyle, Russell Howard, Michael McIntyre, Tim Vine, Johnny Vegas, Andy Parsons, Dylan Moran, a couple of Alan Davies', most of the Lee Evans ones, David Mitchell & Robert Webb did one based on some of their sketches called the Two Faces of Mitchell & Webb which I had the DVD for, Will Ferrell's pastiche of Dubya known as You're Welcome America and Greg Davies (You'll know him as Phil Gilbert (the head of sixth form) in the Inbetweeners) to name but a few. Also you could add all the list above, as in the ones I've seen live as I have all of their released works. It's a hell of a lot of stand up.

I'm not keen on a few though. Ross Noble really gets on my wick, I just don't get him at all. I've never really taken to Kevin Bridges either, seems to be jumping on the Boyle bandwagon. I'd like Omid Djalili more if he didn't make every stand up about being Iranian, and Shappi Khorsandi does a similar angle. Not keen on Lucy Porter either.
