As far as I'm concerned, it's just a legal arrangement to give your partner certain rights in managing your affairs.
The communion of two souls bit can happen with or without it.
Been meaning to post this on here. After almost 3 years of being with my lady we both have agreed to take the plunge into marital bliss once again. I am excited but also we have set the date for next spring.
I know some of you already knew this via Facebook but I wanted to let my other friends whom don't have facebook know!
Which also brings up my next question. What does marriage mean to you. I know some people see it as just a peice of paper while others see it as a communion of 2 souls. I want honest opinions both positive and negative but be respectful of others opinions seeing this is a touchy subject.

For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting. Blessed are the Madmen, for they hold the keys to secret knowledge. Blessed are the Phobic, always wary of that which would do them harm. Blessed are the Obsessed, for their courses are clear. Blessed are the Addicts, may they quench the thirst that never ebbs. Blessed are the Murderous, for they have found beauty in the grotesque. Blessed are the Firelovers, for their hearts are always warm. Blessed are the Artists, for in their hands the impossible is made real. Blessed are the Musicians, for in their ears they hear the music of the soul. Blessed are the Sleepless, as they bask in wakeful dreaming. Blessed are the Paranoid, ever-watchful for our enemies. Blessed are the Visionaries, for their eyes see what might be. Blessed are the Painlovers, for in their suffering, we grow stronger. Blessed is the Madgod, who tricks us when we are foolish, punishes us when we are wrong, tortures us when we are unmindful, and loves us in our imperfection.
I'm with HA on this one. I always thought of it as a piece of paper/tax write-off/thing of that nature. You don't need something like that to know you're with the one you want to be with.
Congratulations to you and your future wife, bro! That's exciting news.
As for what marriage means, as Victoria mentioned, you don't need it to know who you want to be with, but I don't think that's necessarily the point. It's two people telling each other definitively who they want to spend their lives with. Marriage is a connection that bonds you to another human being, both legally and spiritually. How I view it is, you aren't whole until you find somebody (or in some instance, something,) that fills every void in your life, and when you find that person, it just makes sense to seal the bond.
im getting married soon but I see it mainly as a ceremony more for the families other than us. Id rather put the money towards a house deposit TBH...
it was our wedding anniversary on sunday, and tbh, i still wonder why we bothered lol. I often joke that that money could have been better spent on a new car and kitchen.
I was glad when it was all finally over so we could just relax again and concentrate on life lol. i think these things were the major thing for me, it felt like we were planning/paying it off for so long (2 and a bit years) coupled with the horrendous time I had with his mental family I'd just had enough of it all
I don't really know what marriage means to me... nothing has changed for us, relationship still the same etc. If I could go back in time, Id be driving a fancy new car right now.
Congrats bud!
Its good to celebrate every once in awhile, Marriage in my opinion is one of if not thee best celebration/party events. You're celebrating something actually worthy of celebration, love.
All other events are either commercially created for the soul purpose of bleeding your bank account (christmas, easter, halloween) or so frequent and boring (birthdays)
The only other things worth actually celebrating would be the birth of a family member or passing a big exam.
So yeah, out of all we the shit we celebrate, marriage is in my opinion the best and often proves to be, most fun (dont forget the road to marriage often includes the bonus bachelor/bachelorette party)
Am I wierd for not wanting a some other girls tits in my face for my bachelor party?
Yes.
Jking. Or am I?
Congratulations again, Meier! I think it's awesome. It's still very exciting news! =D
Getting married isn't on the top of my list of goals. It's certainly something I'd like for my life, but it doesn't make or break it. I don't understand the rush to get married with young couples. My hopes is to be with my partner until I die anyway, and I don't think marriage would change that for me. Marriage to me is a formality, and while still exciting, it irks me that my relationship with my partner is deemed less worthy and taken less seriously because we're not married.
The celebration side, however, is something I'm really looking forward to. I'd hate to think how much it's going to cost, but I have a lot of talented friends who I know who'd help me with food, photographs, lighting, music, props, etc... I dream of a woodland clearing, with a bonfire, and cabins, and stars and lots and lots of wine. Damn hippie shit.
Indeed, bring on the tits.
