Why do people use anime characters, fictional creatures, etc as avatars? Why are you curious about the gender of an avatar matching the gender of the user?
Guys using female faces as forum avatars.
Not just here, also at the 3 other forums I visit.
Wasn't much of this a couple of years ago, now it's everywhere. Can someone explain?
I'm not trying to bash anyone, Im just curious .
Why do people use anime characters, fictional creatures, etc as avatars? Why are you curious about the gender of an avatar matching the gender of the user?
Simple. Because it's eye candy for some. But it's just a picture. They're not meant to be accurate representations of the user. Just of the user's interests.
Though in most cases I find they ARE a representation of the user.
Take che for example.
I think most of the time an avatar isn't a direct representation of the user. (It probably wouldn't be good if my avatar is a direct representation of me since the character in my avatar has some questionable hobbies. )I know that I usually make avatars from specific characters that I like in anime/manga. Like Vicky said, I'm interested in anime and manga, so that's what I put as my avatar. Also, in anime, girls usually have better personalities, so they're more likable. Most male characters are generic.
To be fair, che's avatars are usually just pictures of what/who he'd have sex with. (Darth Vader, Demi Lovato, deadmau5, etc) <--why the **** do I pay so much attention to your avatars?
Avatars are meant to convey something about the user.... but it might just be "I think she's hot."
Curious?

HEY DO YOU LIKE MUSIC? Because I make music.
LISTEN HERE!
You can tell something about the user by looking at his avatar as it quite often indicates what he or she likes. Take me for instance, I have a female avatar even though I'm a guy, it represents my taste in music, I love Gothic Metal/Rock bands with female vocalists.

...honestly? My avatar is usually just a smaller version of my banner in my sig (most of the time). I make the banners when I'm in the mood to, and they usually convey something that I've thought about recently. Like right now, my banner is of Zhai from Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, an old PS2 game I used to like.
I'd say I was due a change or something because I don't really like it. ^^;
Half the damn time, it's not even showing for me anyway. >>;
Not that it matters in my shoes right now, as I am female. But it doesn't really bother me with anyone else. Only avatars that bother me are the really tiny ones. ^^;
Sometimes I use male avatars, but I do try to use female ones most of the time. The internet makes things quite androgynous; when I first chose my name I didn't realize people would associate it with a male. So I try to use my avatar as a hint, though because so many guys use female avatars anyways I suppose the effort is wasted heh. No different from playing online games though.
~DragonHeart~
Family: Psiko, Mistress Sheena, Djinn
My avatar is usually a little sprite or animation.
Usually something i've made. 9 times out of 10 it's male.

Unknown Entity, My recipe trading, PS3 playing cousin.

And then just like that i'm gone again.
I thought you were a guy when I first started reading you're post too, that girl in your avatar looks kindof like a guy.
The "~"s around your name at the bottom of the post look, feminine though.
I agree about the genderlessness off internet use. Im not trying to say anything negative about using gender oppisite avatars, or entirely posing as oppisite gender(responsibly). I was just wondering why it's more common nowdays than it used to be.
Though now that I think about it many guys in Final Fantasy have female faces. So it fits well in this board in particular

Guys posting female faces as avatars pisses me off, because when I come to find out that that particular person is a pain in the ass, and is in actuality not female, it ****s up my entire stream of consciousness.
Posting the opposite sex as an avatar is deceptive, and if you do it, then Jesus hates you, you're a son of a bitch, and you deserve to rot in hell for all eternity.
I can't get mine to work! I keep banging it.. but nothing..
I think I've used one female character as my avatar for my entire illustrious career posting on forums. It was Ririn from Bleach. That looks fairly androgynous though, maybe. I'm pretty sure that when I used her, though, it was after I'd been here for like 5 or 6 years, so it probably didn't confuse anyone. Except maybe newbies.
Then again, there have been people in the past who have thought I was a girl anyway, just from the way I typed. Mostly girls, though. The whole "Wuv, Yer Mom" thing probably doesn't help my case either. Anyhoo...
Wuv, Yer Mom
My avatars just happen to be various things I've been involved with/interested in as of late. Like Nicki Minaj aw yeah I'm definitely been involved with that na mean Also it throws the female stalkers off a bit too, because then they think to themselves "wait a minute Rocky could actually be sexy enough to be a girl how come I didnt think of it" and bam! mission accomplished

I actually kind of agree with this. Not that I would think of anyone less as a Female or Male, but if I'm talking to someone or referring to them it just, kinda sorta messes me up my thought process of that person. I guess because when I read posts I try to imagine a voice and figure for that person as if you're reading fiction, and the ambiguity just messes me up. Does that make sense?
I've always hated Andro for this and his/her (I lean toward "her" though) smug refusal to reveal which gender she is. I kinda respect her for being "oooh mysterious" but it kinda itches at my curiosity and desire to call her by her true gender whatever it may be.
Andromeda is a male.
Also, I solve mysterys on TFF! Zoinks!

In Andro's defense, he doesn't reveal it because honestly, it's the internet and it doesn't really matter what gender you are. And it irks him when people reveal his gender too, because again, it shouldn't matter what it is.
And as far as it messing you up; you're not supposed to assume anyone's gender in the first place. So it's your own fault if you get messed up. If you're not sure, ask. It's that simple.
I don't get it. What about the pronouns? And what's wrong with Scott Pilgrim? A guy can't like Scott Pilgrim? Is that it? ;p
The point is, don't assume. Just ask.

Really? Wow. My bro introduced me to the comic, and I believe all the members of the Scott Pilgrim social group "Sex Bob-Omb" on TFF are males. So in short, my experience has been that more guys like it than girls, heh. Oh well. Now you know. And I'm not sure what I think of this idea that it shouldn't matter what your gender is. On one hand, I'd hope that people were honest. On the other hand, I guess I'll never meet most of you, so... Anyhoo...

For the record, I am not actually Santonio Holmes, in case that needed to be cleared up.

I don't know anything about the comic, but I know several girls who are HUGE fans of the movie. Maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know many anime/manga fans anymore, these days I kindof just step over them when I want to look at the graphic novels in book stores (not rudely, I say "excuse me")
Are the comics Shonen?
Uh, Scott Pilgrim is an American comic. It's not a Japanese manga. It's basically got huge gaming references and a whole lot of that kinda stuff.
The bottom line, girls aren't the main target of the comic.
But anyways, this isn't about SP. Uh.. Yeah. So the moral of the story is, don't assume anything just because of an avatar.
This is like people complaining that males use female avatars in games. If I have to stare at a character's ass all day long, I'd prefer it to be something tolerable to look at. My avatar/sig is not a representation of what I look like(damn that'd be awesome... wait, what? ). I choose my avatar/sig for aesthetic purposes.
By looking at my user id combined with the phrase "Magically Delicious" one could presume that I am a male. Of course, it could all be a complex scheme to lure you into a false sense of security. Hmm...
Well you wouldn't call the F. columbarius and F. aeasalon(bird) magically delicious, would you?
