    Sick Days

So today for the second time since I've started working jobs almost a year ago, I've called in sick. My throat is aboslutely killing me, and my voice sounds like I gargled hot asphalt, though that may be because I'm awake early (though I oveslept my alarm by 3 hours).

SO, How often do you tend to call in? Do you call in on days you just don't feel like working, or do you save it for when you really need are sick or can't come in? The same can go for not showing up to school or uni too.

And on a side note, give me your home remedies for sore throats. Preferably ones that don't involve tea or a doctor, though if I have to suck it up for tea I can I suppose.

    <3 you guys.

    Re: Sick Days

When I actually had a day-by-day job I didn't call in sick unless I had to. I worked at GameStop and I loved my job. I worked at a game store what is not to love.

I would definitely try some warm tea, with a bit of honey. Honey is supposed to help sore throat. My doctor told me to gargle salt water every 2 hours. Never heard that one thought that was for losing a tooth.

Sitting here waiting for Rocky, and Che to notice me!!

    Re: Sick Days

    I don't think I ever called in sick while I was at secondary school or college. Obviously mum had to call in if I got ill when I was at primary school, but that's it. Secondary school only really required a signed note from a parent. College was pretty much your own responsibility, but no one seemed to care or notice if I took a day off due to illness. I took a little advantage of that on a few down days so I could just work at home. ^^;

Sweets. Well, cough sweets. Some of them are pretty tasty but others not so much. I don't know if you can get them over there, but Soothers and Lockets can help. Soothers are the yummy ones, but don't work as well as Lockets, and Lockets work faster, but they're really gross.

If you're not into the tea idea, take a small spoon of honey every few hours. It's got antibacterial and antibiotic properties, so it should clean and sooth your throat pretty well. You can also put a few spoons in with a tea, like honey and camomile tea - pretty much the only thing I drink when my throat feels like a chainsaw.

My dad swears by a honey and ginger tea he makes up when he gets sick. I've never tried it, but it's something. xD

Whatever you do, do not drink milk. Milk contains bacteria which'll just make it worse.

I think we might have some honey and chamomile tea around somewhere. I might look into that later. I'm gonna make some soup in a few hours for lunch, but these meds might kick most of it before then.

    Re: Sick Days

During my first job I may had called out sick when I truly wasn't; an example would be when Advent Children was released in the U.S., a bunch of my friends and I gathered at one of the friend's house and watched it.

Nowadays I don't call out sick if I'm not and I'm rarely sick so I hardly call out. Even if I'm a little under the earth (why under the weather? We always are) I still won't call out.

Get rid of your throat. Home surgery. Messy & painful, but after the pain from the surgery subsides you won't have a sore throat anymore.

Took a few days off practice during juniors(hockey) whenever I got sick, It wasn't worth risking the entire team getting sick, so the coach was pretty easy going about it.

Of course he'd kill you the next day you got back to catch up on your conditioning

    Re: Sick Days

When I used to work, I called in sick quite a few times, a combination of hangovers or late nights after my partner had stayed the night. I got a huuuuge telling of from my boss one time, cos I hadn't called in, he was M.A.D!!! as hell.

When I get sore throat I tend to drink tea and munch down throat sweets, lockets, soothers, strepsils and sometimes take cold and flu painkillers like beechems or lemsip max. I don't bother the doctor for a sore thoat, they will only tell you to wear a scarf if it's cold to keep the cool out and tell you to take throat sweets or painkillers.

    Hope you feel better soon

    Re: Sick Days

In my kind of job, I would feel too guilty to call in sick because of the importance of my services are to my clients and their families.

If anything though, I have called in a few times and told the families that I'm close with that I'd be out of town at the next week or so, then even though I wouldn't be working that day, I'd still do the paperwork and get paid for it. My business of employment is pretty chill and oblivious to a lot of what goes on, but I don't exactly feel bad for them at this point.

    Re: Sick Days

I don't have a job, so I can't call in. Suppose that makes my presence in this thread a little suspect... But I have skipped classes because of the damn Ragweed pollen. In KY, pollen count is always ridiclous. When I woke up my eyes were glued shut and swollen, they itched enough I wanted to grab a fork and scrape them out of my head.

As for a sore throat remedy...try tea.

I try not to call in, but I have for actual illnesses, like food poisoning. Otherwise, I'm like the goddamn post office.

Lately though, I've been calling out in advance so that I can take care of things for my future hopeful profession. Lots of tests and background checks.

    Re: Sick Days

I showed up to a history class with the flu and a fever of 102. I felt bad for everyone else in the room, but my college was real strict with absences. Sorry. I sat as far away as possible.

But I will definitely stay home if I'm having stomach issues. That same flu, a different day of class, I stayed home because I started vomiting. I take stomach stuff seriously.

But I very rarely get sick, even with a cold, so it's usually not a problem. So yeah, I rarely call in. Actually.... I did miss a class once because I'd just broken up with my boyfriend of nearly three years, I couldn't stop crying and snotting everywhere, and the class was going to be a complete drag even in the best of moods, so... I skipped it. Wouldn't have bothered to do that in a job or rehearsal situation, but... ah well.

Joe: Steam is your friend. Warm, moist air on your vocal chords will help. I take a lot of hot showers when I have a sore throat.

    Hydrate, rest. The basics.
