    School Internet/ Locked Connections

To we who suffer with school blockers >.>
I was on this site yesterday on a school computer strangely enough, and this thing was strict filter. I couldn't access my gmail, yet a forum dedicated to gaming is allowed? It filters for words pertaining to adult whatnot and if it sees games it auto-blocks. How then, did I get on? I didn't do anything to the blocker as I don't want to get suspended but it let me slide right on by, and I'm pretty sure this site has everything the blocker seeks out to block.
Any ideas on why I got in?
Also, who else here uses a school connection sometimes and hates how ridiculously strict it is?

    Re: School Internet/ Locked Connections

My college allowed certain sites (like facebook, and this one for example) to be used at lunch time (between 12pm and 2pm), and after 5pm. Maybe it had something to do with the time you were using the computer?

It also kept e-mail services locked, besides the colleges own e-mail system. So I couldn't access hotmail, but I could access assignments being sent to me. =(

    Re: School Internet/ Locked Connections

A lot of times the filters evolve over time. I've seen filters come up to block sites I was able to access several days ago, and I've also seen filters change to patch up any alternate routes I found via the internet. I recall that back in the myspace days, you couldn't go to myspace.com, but you COULD go to someone's profile, and click the login link, and get in with no issues.

I also remember one story where you could pull up a blocked page in a browser window, leave the "this site is blocked message" open, and browse at your leisure.

I swear, if my school had let me manage their laptops, the students wouldn't be getting away with half the stuff they are now.

When it comes to the net, the rules are really loose here on college, you have access to pretty much anything except for porn, but even that is easily by passed. At one point of the year you were even allowed to download anything you want, movies, games, you name it, I don't know if you're still allowed to do that.

Though it was a different story in highschool, everything was pretty much locked, except for their official site, the only time you could really do something on the net is when you were allowed to, which was on rare occasion. I hear it's much better from kids now days.

In High School I had to request a gaming forums to get unblocked from it's network. It worked haha.

    Re: School Internet/ Locked Connections

In high school, our filter was picky about myspace, but stlpunk (the myspace of St. Louis) TFF and various other sites worked just fine. SOME game sites were blocked, others we went on and played flash-based games all day.

This was a godsend, because in my computer classes (3/8, so usually half of one day and a quarter of another) were so ridiculously easy that I would be done with the week long projects in one day.

My college WIFI connection blocks nothing, that I've seen. Every type of https:// connection is allowed. When you first connect there's a list of things to-do and not to-do, but they don't strictly block anything.

It also helps that my college e-mail is provided through live.com, even though it's @stlcc.edu.

Whoever the network admin was in my high school was braindead. We could send command-line messages to computers over the network. They'd yell at us for doing it, but their systems didn't log who was logged in at the time of the messages being sent. That was always fun.

    Re: School Internet/ Locked Connections

In high school I never had to worry about getting blocked. I had admin access as part of my study program I was doing for IT. I took full advantage of that.

In college they don't give to shits what you get on. I was in the cafeteria an some dude was watching porn. I mean come on watch this shit at home.

    Re: School Internet/ Locked Connections

In high school, they blocked damn near everything, except for sites like espn and whatever was deemed to have not questionable content.

In college, they didn't really block anything. The biggest problem that we had was setting up the computers in our dorms. We had to be routed through the schools network and download a free antivirus/ anti spyware program and all of that good shit. The only problem was that you had to go in, completely delete the one from the last year, which always seemed to get more and more difficult as the years went on.

Laptops were a bitch too. My ex would bring hers over all the time, and when she'd try to connect, we would have endless problems.
