If you could teleport from earth to another planet millions of light years away in the space of 1 second, you wouldn't be looking into the past if you were able to view the earth.

Let's say that there are two periods, A and B. A is a day when dinosaurs existed. B is today. The light from the sun, that hit Earth on day A, is still travelling in space, if you go far enough away from earth at such a speed so as to overtake it (i.e. if you travel faster than light), you will be able to receive that light and see what A looked like, while B is occurring. Just as the sun you're looking at is 7 minutes old or whatever, yet the physical sun is actually something slightly different as we look at it. You don't travel into the past per se, just look at really old light.

Lol nice straw man. All the same, I guess you wouldn't really be looking at dinosaurs either. You'd be viewing the Earth when dinosaurs were on it. I don't see dust devils on mars when I look at it in a telescope. But it's a little irrelevant to my statements lol.

Well im going to have to disagree with your perceptions of viewing the past. Seeing leftover light leaving earth from millions of years ago isn't looking into the past. Get your story straight. This is serious ****ing business.

You'd only ever be able to see dinosaurs if you were travelling faster than the speed of light, and even then, it wouldn't be as simple as looking through a telescope. In order to see a past event (or rather, see old scattered light that still holds reflections (perhaps the wrong word? idgaf) of previous events, or the past), you have to be travelling faster that the speed of light, so fast that the speed of light is barely "speedy" at all. Even if you could see anything while travelling at the speed of light, all you'd be seeing is a pinpoint full of trillions of photons that wouldn't make any sense at all - like cutting up a million photographs into millions of pieces and scattering them.

If you were to travel a hundred light years away, and then look back at earth, Rowan is correct in thinking that you'd just see Earth as it was when you'd left it. We're travelling around the Sun at about 67,000 miles an hour, whereas the speed of light is about 670,616,629 miles per hour. Everything we can see in space is reflected light from something that may have happened thousands to millions of years ago, but you'll always be seeing it as it is from this moment in time. Mind ****.

Of course, nothing as been proven - this is all theory. I mean, who's even travelled at the speed of light and came back to tell us how it is? How would we know they're telling the truth? No normal object can travel at the speed of light as the mass of it would become infinite, therefore so would the energy required to move it. The human race will probably never find out, unless there is intelligent life out there who are far more advanced and somehow discover us.

You're constantly looking in the past, because no matter how short and insignificant, it takes SOME time for light to bounce off a certain physical situation that presents itself and then travel to your eye. But this fraction of time is irrelevant to us because it is so small, it is unnoticeable and negligible. So we perceive 'seeing' as an instant process because of the incredible speed of light.

Now take sound for instance. That might be easier to understand. Have you ever seen a fast plane go by, yet the sound you hear seems to come from a place just behind where the plane is when you follow it with your eyes? Or ever seen someone in the distance smack a hammer on something yet you hear it hit right after you see it hit it? That's because sound waves take some time to travel from where they are emitted to in this case your ear. So you hear sound coming from somewhere where in fact the source of the sound is no longer present. This is actually noticeable because sound is not as ridiculously fast (even though still fast) like light, so over a great distance, the time it takes for it to travel becomes noticeable. Obviously, we also usually perceive hearing as something that happens instantly because sound still travels at a high speed and the time it takes to travel to you is usually not noticeable. It is only noticeable when dealing with greater distances.

Same goes for light, but because light waves travel so incredibly fast, it's only noticeable over huge distances like galaxies far far away.

So if you happened to be 100 lightyears away from planet earth, you would be in a place where the light that bounced off the earh 100 years ago has just reached. (Because 1 lightyear is the distance light travels, in a vacuum, in a year.) Because 'seeing' is light being interpreted by your eyes and brain, you would see a condition that 'was' 100 years ago. So if you were at that position and you had some sort of ridiculously zoomed in telescope you could see the earth the way it was 100 years ago. Just like how I'm seeing a person standing next to me how he/she was a tiny, tiny, tiny, insignificant fraction of a second ago.

You could use basically anything that has a source or starting point and a point it will reach as an analogy. But I used sound because it is also something we use to observe our surroundings, through hearing.

EDIT: Here we are talking astronomy in a thread about astrology.

Yall need to recheck what you think "the past" is. It's not one giant place where all of history happened. It's not the present. Ain't nobody never seen no dang timelines? sumbitch

^BEST POST IN THE THREAD, SHUT IT DOWN.

But really, what are you guys even talking about? Did you know there's a Mayan zodiac? "Really?" YES REALLY.

I'm a monkey. My friend is grass (if you know what I mean) and my enemy is... crocodile. WELL. Shouldn't be too hard to avoid.

EDIT: UMM. I was googling for an image of a crocodile being dumb, and I found THIS:

Rename thread 'astrology and people arguing about what the past is'

If sound has yet to reach your ears, if light has yet to reach your eyes, if the wind has yet to blow all over your face, they are not examples of past. They are examples of particles that do exist, but have yet to present their properties to your senses.

Here is the most simplest analogy I can make. If alpha was in his backyard in nz, and I was in my backyard in Melbourne, and he clicked a flashlight on in my general direction. If I was to blink instant to alphas location as he clicked the flashlight on and I needed up behind him, I would not be there to see him press the button, because I am blinking as he clicks regardless of how fast I am traveling. If your arguments are based on the residual image left from reflected light from millions of years ago, that is not the past, because the present will always remain the same.

As far as astrology goes, I'm a cancer. The most sexually appealing and strong willed of the zodiac... Sometimes they get it right ... =D

Dinosaurs didn't die. Michael Crichton did. lol

    Anywho.

Career matters may be put on hold for a few days, Aquarius, but your professional future probably won't be far from your thoughts, even in the midst of time spent with family and friends. You want to improve your financial situation, and a number of possibilities have come up. Don't mull them over too much now. You don't want to neglect your loved ones. Relax and enjoy their company today.

Interesting. No possibilities have come up .. yet. I mean, we ate at LongHorn last night and my drunk self asked the manager if they needed servers. He told me to apply and call him as soon as I did. I warned him that I'm probably un-rehirable. He said just do it and we'll talk.

..... I think 'cuz my boobies were mostly on full display though.

Mayan Zodiac. I'm a Reed. What the hell fizuck kinda shiz is -that-? And for once, doesn't describe me even closely..

Reed—Known for their ability as an arbitrator and intermediary, they take a shine to politics and other areas of leadership. Reed can help people with opposing viewpoints see the whole situation more clearly. They are great storehouses of knowledge and are often sought out for their expertise in many fields. They can display the fiery temper associated with day signs ruled by the East. They are often known to be inflexible, so they may have some difficulty in relationships. If their mate helps them bend their perspectives, then they can create harmonious family situations.

I avoid politics like the plague. Smart? Eh. Sure. What the hell. Temper? Check. Inflexible? Pshaw. There's only a few things I won't budge on.
