O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Have you ever been with somebody who your family and friends disapproved of? Was it severe, like a Capulet vs Montague type of situation or was it not too much of a problem?

If you haven't, would you ever go out with someone who your friends and family absolutely hated, but you really, really liked?

Personally, I haven't gone out with anybody who my parents "hated", but my nan absolutely loathed my first boyfriend's guts. My friends didn't like him very much either, they all thought he was weird and creepy. They kept telling me I could do better, and then when we eventually broke up, I realised their words rang true because now he uploads videos of himself on youtube rubbing tomato ketchup on his nipples.

...Yeah. Good riddance, wish I'd listened to my friends sooner really.

As for my last boyfriend, nobody hated him but they all thought he was really boring. But hey, at least he doesn't put ketchup on his nipples. I hope.

My folks have only met one girl of mine (weren't really dating yet, but they loved her).

Other then that, they don't tend to meet many of my friends at all. I'm always out and a bout.

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

My family wasn't a fan of my first girlfriend at all. Actually they were pretty adamant against us being together saying that she would lead me down the wrong path and what not and that she was way too caught up in the whole thing. I really didn't take to their advice but after a few months things went sour and I ended the whole thing. Pretty much for the exact reasons my family brought up for the get go. Go figure that their advice would have saved that poor girl the hardship of a bad break up and such.

If I would ever do it again? I'll say sure but it would be quite different because I think a lot of the qualities I value are pretty much the same across the board for my friends and family too now. I'm sure there could be an exception and I've got no problem with frustrating family and friends for my decisions.

No, my mums pretty laid back, she always just left me to it, throwing the odd bit of 'advice' at me now and then lol

I was with someone not long after school though, and his mum and co didnt like me, for no other reason than no one was good enough for her son. From what I heard he never had much luck in future relationships because of their attitude.

I'll never undersand that mentalilty, i can only see it doing harm no good

My daughters never having a boyfriend/girlfriend ever. So il not have to worry about that

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

My mum hasn't ever not liked any of my boyfriends. Like Lily's mum, my mother just let me make my own decision in respect to relationships. But she's always there for me if I'm upset of whatever.

But on the flip side. I didn't like the majority of my mothers boyfriends. My dad was a jerk, but I guess I should approve that 'cause then I wouldn't be alive. There were 3 dead beat kind of guys. And the worst one of all was her last relationship. He was the biggest ***hole. He used to beat her. I didn't even know! He caused all kinds of trouble for her. Luckily we don't have worry about that guy anymore. As my ma will be getting married to her sweetheart. They've been together for ages so they're practically married already. Lol. He's such a nice man and the the only man I could compare to a good father figure. So happy for them!

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Hoo boy. I have a story...

My parents, and my nan, really hated my last boyfriend, so much so, my dad refused to have anything to do with him. It all started when we went to London the November after we got together so he could meet them. The trip went very badly wrong, and some times you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. The first thing they didn't like about him was the fact he had no job and had no intention of ever getting one, because he had basically been dragged up to rely on benefits. The second thing was the way he was clingy with me and wouldn't keep his hands off me, in front of my parents as well. Nextly when I took him to meet my nan, he was apparently very disrespectful, stepping into the house before being invited in (which personally I don't remember, but I don't see why my nan would lie)and again being clingy with me and having me sit on the sofa with him when I was sitting in Grandad's old chair to begin with. Another thing that annoyed them was his crude jokes and comments (then he had the gall to claim he was 'embarrassed' at some of my mum's rude jokes. The final straw came when he refused to eat something my parents cooked as je 'had had it yesterday.' My dad got so pissed off with him he took me aside and strongly advised me to dump him. Whilst we were out, my mum gave him a stern lecture, the full extent of which only became known to me throughout the rest of the relationship, which ladted another 21 months.

My dad and nan in particular, were overjoyed when I finally ended it, they truly couldn't stand him. I came to realise why, and that is mostly why I ended it. I did consider breaking up with him 18 months before I actually did (because I kinda liked someone else...) bt I figured that particular relationship had zero chance of working anyway so I decided to stick with what I had. Stupid, and somewhat cowardly, idea.

After I split up with him, a good few of my friends were rather glad and stated they didn't think he was right for me/ didn't like him anyway. That says a lot about him and the whole relationship.

By God, I wrote a lot, and on my phone, too. My arm is tired...

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

I suppose I did, but they never found out, heh. I tried telling my mother once that I was in a long-distance relationship, and she gave me a long lecture about how I wasn't to get involved with one of those relationships. I once even got her opinion on a few details of the person I was dating, and she didn't understand and thought that was wrong too.

I think a lot of people reject things too quickly if they don't understand it. That was my mother's problem. Instead of listening to me and understanding, she jumped in with her opinion and scared me off from ever telling her. That was one of the few things that was wrong with my relationship - secrecy. Everything she hated about it wasn't something to hate.

My current boyfriend... eh. I'm unsure if my mother likes him or not. When I first told her details about what he looks like and how old he is (there's eight years between us...), she looked worried. Then she met him, and he'd came over a few times, she seemed to quickly warm to him. Then she asked why he wasn't over enough, so I invited him over more and more, and now I think she's sick of him.

She also thinks I've changed as a result of having a boyfriend, which she has no idea how wrong she is...

Heh, actually, I was kinda afraid of the reaction of my parents when I presented them my new boyfriend... They've mostly disapproved of my boyfriends, which was mostly because they weren't at my place that much. But they didn't really hate them... they just hadn't seen them much and weren't sure what kind of person they were.
But they really love my current boyfriend, mostly because his humor fits our family's perfectly.

I must admit, though, that I'd have a HUGE problem if my parents disliked my boyfriend. I don't think I'd be able to lead a happy relationship under these circumstances...

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

    I am kinda the opposite...

My parents pretty much accepted/liked the guys I introduced them to. It's probably because I never really had a boyfriend until after College/already in a stable job and my mom was probably worried that I am never gonna get married. My dad was strict so I just ignored dating while I was school despite guys trying to ask me out.

    On the other hand:

Some friends of my parents/relatives would joke around wanting me to become their daughter-in-law and try to pair me up with their sons. >_<

Eventually I moved to the US 'cos of a job assignment. I met my ex's parents several times and they are super nice to me. At the end of the relationship when me and my ex were not really in good terms, they were even nicer than my ex lol.

Now that I am married, my in-laws are AMAZING. They are like my parents here while I am away from mine. My husband's mom always buy me stuff when we visit (she has two sons I guess she wanted a daughter ^^). I feel guilty sometimes =S Some people dread hanging out with their in-laws, I don't. I feel lucky.

I think overall when you're older and meet people around your age who are already working, stable etc. Families tend to not interfere so much. I can imagine my dad toting around a shotgun had I started dating at a younger age....and that would've allowed me to contribute a RomeoxJuliet story in this thread lol.

EDIT - *shoots self for not reading the question(s) properly* Well if I like someone so bad that my parents disapprove of, if I am old enough, I'd probably disobey them. Otherwise, I probably wont go out with that person. So..with that said, at my age right now. yes, I'd go out with them anyway lol

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

I, too, would like to see ketchup nipples.

There was one person I dated who my parents didn't like. I mean, my dad liked him... because he was already friends with him. And they're still friends now that we're done, but it was a little weird for a while. Sorry, dad. My mom never liked him. He was much older than me (around 40... I was 20/21 at the time), but I had just gotten out of a three year relationship, had always had sort of a teenaged crush on him, so.... it just sort of happened. I was still away at college most of the time, so I'd only see him over the summer and winter breaks. We came to really care about each other, but we both knew it would eventually end. When it did... my mom was pretty stoked. I guess she was afraid he was taking advantage, which was a bit insulting to me, because I definitely shared equal responsibility for my involvement with him.

But she LOVES current boyfriend. There are several reasons why, but one of them is definitely that he is only a year older.

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

    HEY OCEANEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

I have never been in a relationship that my parents have totally disapproved. Mind you, I never really speak to them about it.

My dad doesn't seem to care about any relationships I'm in. I don't talk to him too much. I just know that he exists somewhere in my house.

My mom does have an opinion, but whether or not I listen to it is up to me. It's my life. choose who I can like (or dislike). She is entitled to have an opinion. But so far, she hasn't liked any of my boyfriends (That she's known about)

The parents of boyfriends seem to like me. Er, have liked me. They're all exs now. There's one ex who's parents I went to dinner with a few times. They were good parents. Another ex's parents were just weird, but when that guy went to university, they wanted me to come with them to see him, and I did. I spent the weekend with them. I kind of felt awkward, but yeah. Unfortunately, We broke it off anyway...and that as they say is that.

I don't think parents should really care. As long as their child is happy and not being influenced, abused or anything like that, they should just keep their own dark opinions to themselves.

    ...Oh, okay.

The ketchup nips are only on for a couple of seconds about halfway through I think. And might I just say, he was nothing like that when we were together. Nothing.

I totally understand now how you felt a tad bit uncomfortable putting that up. Your right it is pretty strange.

On the flip side this whole ketchup on the nipples has really got me wondering the erotic implications it could have. I mean it could really catch on. Two girls a ketchup bottle and fries? Maybe that day is closer than we think.

Yep that's pretty odd. Haha well, Xana... don't worry. We all have that one ex... and I mean, he seems like he was fairly good-looking under the makeup and ketchup so... that's... good.

That ketchup nips video was scary, but for reasons not involving ketchup nips. Maybe he'll become famous one day... for something good I hope.

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

My family is old-fashioned when it comes to significant others. My grandparents had to approve of my parents union before they even thought of getting married. It is the same with my parents. But unlike my parents getting approval, my siblings didn't. My brother went against my parents and got married. Now, he is separated from his wife (I just found out today). My sister tends to choose people unsuited for her (she goes for people who have done time), but she can't reasoned with.

I believe that because your parents know you better than you do, they deserve a say in the matter. They can see through any facade that the boyfriend/girlfriend puts up.

I have only had a little experience with that kind of stuff, because school was always more important. Now, working to keep my parent's house going is more important. My parents approved of the one girlfriend I did have. And when it eventually ended, they were supportive. My one Ex still is a good friend, and my parents still wish that it had worked out.

I have to think that I would bring any future people to my parents to get their approval. But as I am not actively looking, I don't know. Still, I am fairly certain I would. They are my parents, after all.

Yeah... your ex scares me. I used to like the Kryptonite song. I'll never view it in the same light again.

My mum would definitely love my boyfriend if he was like that. /mydeargodno

I've built up a really good judge of character, and my mother is sure I was just born with it. She took me into work with her once when I was a baby, and I wasn't pleased when the co-workers my mum hated came near me, haha. I was (and kinda still am) a bit of a loner through school, so I had time to sit back and read people a little more. I can pick up people's moods without them showing any signs of it - much to many people's annoyance. So she trusts my judgement, more or less. That doesn't stop her being protective.

Bottom line though, it is my life. If any of my relationships cause a huge problem for my family, then I'll rethink it. If my mother doesn't like someone I'm with, then she'll just have to live with it until I can conclude that she was right all along.

Re: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

I had a few girlfriends and girls I was kinda seeing that my parents didn't approve of. My friends don't really approve of anyone I go out with, but that's mostly because they think I can do better. They don't tell me this until after the fact... never before things get more serious.

One ex tried to run me over with her car and essentially systematically destroy me... my parents actually really liked her until she went nanners.
