Ok so I have heard about it for years, joked around about it for a long time and actually find the topic pretty interesting.

Some MOB use the marriage as a means to enter and gain citizenship into country's while others actually do it thinking they will find love while the last few do it for money for their family.

Given this topic is not just about the ladies either, there are supposably mail order husbands too.

So I am not sure where I am going with this but there is tons of actual discussion to be had on the topic so I will start off with just what are your thoughts on mail order brides and husbands?

Figured it would be an interesting topic ahaaha that hasn't been discussed before. Thinking out of the box.

I find it funny/sad. I mean if anyone thinks this is the way to find love, well maybe you've dug your own grave. But for a guy who's really lonely, and a girl who's gonna hoodwink her way to a green card. Maybe they deserve eachother?

Every now, and then they post pictures of mail order brides on The Chive, some of them are really hot, I mean really really hot, nevertheless I find the whole procedure kinda lame, a way of saying that you can't find a girl on your own.

If they're both cool with it, all the power to them! If a guy is getting old, or simply has no luck and is desperate to find someone be it long term or temporary why not? Sure it's pretty sad and desperate, but whatever tickles the pickle. And if a woman is able to make a better life for herself on the wallet of a rich guy again, all the power to her.

I wouldn't do it. And while I wouldn't judge someone for doing it, it doesn't seem like a good idea to me. A lot of those MOB/H are just trying to get a green card. And even if they're one of those that are actually looking for love, do they ever meet-or even talk-their spouse to be beforehand? How do you know you will be compatible with this person? Seems very risky to me. I think Mel's idea of a 30 day trial is a good one, haha.

There has been someone around here that had a MOB. She wouldn't ever let him touch her, apparently, heh. Talk about a marriage based in love. Anyhoo...

I'm with Telegraph. It's just not a good idea. I'm not even 100% for two long distance lovers marrying for a passport, but I understand why some couples would do it. I just think marrying a total stranger for a passport is pretty grim, is pretty obvious, and I swear it can get people into some trouble? Not only that, but the emotional impacts that could have.

I don't know any website that lets you just "purchase" a bride off the website no questions asked, a lot of them have you talk and get to know the potential bride better, but a lot of it is a scam. The girls feign interest so they can get free stuff from potential suitors. A lot of them do this for a living and know how make batchelors buy all kinds of crazy ish for them, but a few of them may end up getting married to some guy who does have enough money. The websites are sketch as well, a lot of them make you spend money to fly out and meet the girl, have to spend money to be in a hotel for the time, you have to take her out to dinner, costs money to get a translator if the girl can't speak english, and you get a limited amount of time to meet with them, etc.

anyways with that being said, if I get too old and lonely with my swimming pool of cash, then I'll have to look into it again lol

Maybe it's just me, but I'm kiiinda prejudiced about stuff like that. If you need to buy a bride, from a catalog, that's just the epitome of sad. I'd also be leery about marrying a non-citizen. How would I know that I'm not just getting played for a green card?

a family friend of ours actually had a MOB at one point. first off, i dont know why he decided to go that route - mid 30s, good looking, smart, etc. should have had no problem finding a bride in the states. she was gorgeous, russian, but a tad bit crazy. they had 2 kids together before they divorced a few years ago and she moved back to russia.
i dont know....i guess some people feel this is what they need to do in life to be happy

My opinion on this is:

"To each his own"...or rather her...or, their own.

Nowadays, there are so many different ways to find love, or in lieu of love, someone to procreate with. All of the dating websites got their premise from the Mail Order business. It is just digitized and photoshopped now. If someone wants to go that route, then let them, and don't look down on them for it. Maybe the way you meet that special someone is not the "right" way for someone else, and vice versa.

Personally, I wouldn't go that route. But if worse comes to worse, I wouldn't totally say "No" to it.

All interesting perspectives on the topic most I can't disagree with.

I have used MOB (nice acronym) as the butt of many jokes over the years and even joked with exs that if things didn't work out that I was going to order me a wifey that is sub-servant to my needs and desires.

Over all the true concept of a MOB is not that foreign idea and has been practiced for centuries just in another method. If you think about it the whole concept goes back to ancient times with dowry and prearranged marriages. Through out the centuries it has actually worked to some people (kings) advantages and then again to their disadvantages.

In some cultures still to this day paying money for a wife is acceptable means, take the Hmong for instance. The dowry is still a prerequisite for marriage to be an option. A lot of those style marriages are set up on a blind instance and a lot of those women are actually up for a MOB status.

To disrespect the man they marry is an offense that is not only dishonorable to their family but also can be punishable by death (rare cases) in their culture. Even if they are doing it for a green card, they still have to hold to their cultures values even if it is a false hope for a better future.

Also a thing to think about is how degrading it might feel for some of the people that use that system to gain access to a citizenship via the MOB method. Willing to do what every to give their self and their family a better brighter future even at the cost of loosing ones self for the perks that come along with it. Some of those perks include being beaten and treated as a slave / prostitute.

It is a funny subject but also has many serious points to take into note. Given I am referring to the non scam MOBs.

The silly thing about this that most people don't know, is even if you get a divorce, you're still legally responsible for your ex-wife because they got their citizenship due to your marriage. Friend of mine in the military got screwed over because he helped a girl he met while deployed in korea. She came back to the states, they got the divorce like planned, and then she ended up going to jail for drug related charges / assault. He got in trouble too, because he was legally responsible. Messed up.
