    Losing a pet.

My hamster finally passed away the other day after suffering from a wet tail (in most cases a fatal disease among hamsters) for almost a week. Honestly, it ****ing sucks. I never imagined I would feel as bad as I felt these last couple of days. She was with me for almost three years, the best pet I ever had, unique, crazy, fun to play with, simply the best. I placed her in this small beautiful box and buried her in the backyard.

Ever lost a pet, if so how did you cope with that?

    Re: Losing a pet.

When I was in highschool my dog died (just old age). She was a great dog, extremely loyal, always happy to see me.
I came home from school and she had crawled under the sofa and died.
It was sad in that when I though about it, she spent most of her life alone, waiting for me to come home.
But, she was 14, so I'd known she was getting there. She lost her vision and bladder control the day before.

It didn't really bother me much. For a few days, I kept expecting to see her coming down the stairs when I got home, only to realize she was gone.

I dunno, I'm pretty self-centered, though. Not that I dont feel anything, I just dont get overwhelmed.

A couple of years ago,I lost the best pet I could ever ask for: my Siberian Husky,Zoey. She was there when I was born, and we had been close ever since. When she died she was around 14-15 years old,and I was 12. I remember riding with my mom from school and she kept saying," Haylee,I know someone who has a cute dog they're giving away. You want to go look at it?"
And I told her," No. Zoey doesn't like other dogs."
When we pulled up to the driveway, she finally said," Haylee,Zoey died. Your Pa found her under a tree in the shade."
When I went to go see her,I bursted into tears. We buried her in the woods with her brothers and sisters. After a couple of days,I just forgot that she was dead and just kept telling myself,"She is in the doghouse, sleeping. Or she is out in the woods hunting".

I know that she was in pain(she suffered from arthritis like Wolf, her father, did) and that she is in a better place. But still,I miss her alot...Everytime I pull up in my driveway,I always expect to see Zoey there on the porch wagging her tail and staring at me with her one blue eye and one gray eye.

Both my basset hounds died within 6 months of each other from something called 'bloat' i believe. Its when the stomach twists and begins to swell. Its common amoung basset hounds since they tend to be long and somewhat big. I was in year 8 I think. I started crying at school in front of my friend, how embarassing...

my fish died 3 days ago as well, his name was huskar. He was a blue/purple siamese fighting fish.

Obedient and well trained German Shepard was part of our family for eleven years. She gave birth to two generation of the cutest puppies I ever saw. I guess she passed away of old age. I was still a kid back then, I remember coming back home after playing with my friends when my father told me. Honestly, I don't recall being all that sad, although I still kinda miss her.

    Re: Losing a pet.

I've had plenty of dogs that are now dead. Let's see. There was Dexter. He was a blind daschund/beagle mix who I rescued from a high-kill shelter. He died of old age when he was about sixteen.

There there was Beau, a fox terrier. He actually ended up getting lung cancer when he was nine, and I had to have him put down.

Then Lucy, a purebred beagle. She had a habit of running off, and one unlucky day, she ran off and got hit by a car and died.

And then there was my Uncle Bud. An Alaskan malamute/husky mix. He lived sixteen years and ended up dying of old age.

Then sweet Keta, my German Pinscher. Another dog that I rescued from a high-kill shelter. She died about four years ago, when she was 11. She developed a massive cancerous tumor on her shoulder, and began slowly and painfully dying from it. I couldn't let her suffer anymore, so I had to put her down.

Anyway, since I'm not gay, I've never owned anything but dogs. And those are all the dogs I've had that died.

I had three of my dogs die a couple months ago; one from an attack, the other two by illness. It was really hard on me because I have always had my family to turn to when a pet would die. This time it was just me. The hardest part was definitely the burial. I was okay when I saw them die. I was fine as I carried them to where they were to be buried. It was the actual burying that broke me. I dug the holes in no time, but filling them back in took forever.

My cat "Handsome' was over 21 years old. He was always super healthy. I thought the average lifespan of a cat was around 14 yrs but this guy was so strong. Then he lost his hearing then he slowly went blind but he memorized were everything in the house was and would even want to go outside. At night he would sit in the pitch-black hallway and do this roaring type noise, I think he did this because he wanted to know where I was. Then a week before my finals in college last year he lost control of his bowels and bladder so I had to finally put him down. Made for a lonely Christmas.

    Re: Losing a pet.

My first dog was recently hit by a car right in front of my house. She was a black lab, in her old age she lost her hearing and didn't hear the car coming; it was flying at 45MPH in a 25MPH zone as my house is directly across from an elementary school. Broke my heart, and it was almost a hit and run, but the guy drove back and apologized repeatedly. I still expect to see her laying in her usual spots. Sometimes I'll have my nostalgic moments when she used to be in the car when my grandpa picked me up from school; she'd always round him up at the same time everyday. She was a smart ass dog, indeed. <3

I also had a tough issue with my cat I had a year or so ago. I loved him to pieces, but when my roomy situation didn't work out I had to ultimately bring him to the county shelter where they do euthanize. I felt so horrible about it that I think it was one of the few times in my life where I genuinely cried hysterically; to this day I don't know what's become of him, and I don't really want to know. I still look at the pics I took of him as a kitten. I got him when he was six weeks old, he was a cute mother****er that was for damn sure.

My deepest sympathies for all of you guys, for real. <3

    Re: Losing a pet.

I have never been in a position to own a pet, always living in unfairly small houses with no gardens, but my friends had this wonderfully dopey Golden Retriever called Max, who I loved from the first time I met him. My friends had him from a puppy and he was a mostly naughty dog with an unexplainable fear of bicycles (we think one of the children from the house my friends got him from might have accidentally run him over). He started getting sick from the age of nine (benign skin tags, X-rays that showed arthritis that never seemed to bother him, much to the surprise of the vets) from about fourteen he started getting cataracts, and the arthritis began to take hold; he would bark weakly to ask for help in getting up from the kitchen floor. When it got to that stage, my friends decided to have him put down. It must have been about five years ago now. Although he wasn't my dog I used to take him for walks and play with him in the back garden. I couldn't eat Twix chocolate bars for years because Tracey (my friend) used to give him his medicine in a small chunk of said chocolate, and it just made me sad. He is now in a lovely blue jar on my friends' bookshelf. Or his ashes are, at least.

    Ima sucker when it comes to animals, I get upset when my fish die, my cat fish died the other day and i was like ;_;

Ive had 3 hamsters, a guinea pig and the family cat die over the years, coooountless fish, as Ive always kept an aquarium, and on the odd occasion ive suffered mass death in the tank, oh and a mouse too, she was cool, she didnt have a tail and I took pity on her when I saw her in the pet shop lol. and no, it wasnt just a hamster, some other mouse had bit it off!
