What's the last book you've read?
The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. Quite popular right now although after reading the first one I'm not quite sure why to be honest.
What's it about?
Set in post apocalyptic world ravaged by hunger and poverty twelve districts are under brutal regime of the Capitol, a place with way superior firepower and technology. Each year Capitol hosts The Hunger Games as a reminder never to rebel again and to entertain its citizens. Each district sends two of its members, a young male and a female, to what is pretty much a fight to the death, last person standing is declared a victor and is along with his/hers district handsomely rewarded.
What's the genre (if not obvious)?
Adventure/Sci-Fi.
Would you recommend it?
Surprisingly no. It's not a bad book, read worse to be honest, the premise is interesting and the first few chapters are gripping to say the least, easy to get into. Some parts were genuinely sad. On the other hand it's bit repetitive, there are way too many conveniences, the overall conflict is pretty underwhelming, though my biggest issue, kids from other districts are overall poorly written, save for maybe one or two. Take Cato for instance, breed and trained for one and only purpose, to participate and win these games, a person who Katniss considers to be cunning and intelligent through entire book, yet his stupidity and lack of certain skills is unbelievable.
The love bit is out of a place at times, also, Capitol, force that demolished district 13 just to send a message, is way too concerned with such nonsense.
Are you reading anything since?
Read four chapters of Catching Fire several days ago, right now I'm considering whether I should continue or not as this love bit is really starting to annoy me.
Are there any books you want to read but haven't gotten around to yet?
With Mass Effect novels being a pleasant surprise I was hoping to find another great book based on a video game I'm familiar with. From what I heard Dead Space Martyr is pretty good, might pick that up when/if I'm done with The Hunger Games.
