I think anyone can be nice and blunt. It's down to your personality, and think everyone plays a part in being anyone. It's not really something that bothers me unless someone plays off being two-faced too often.
Masks is a reasonable explanation. As humans, there's things that change to way we act or see things. For example, I feel threatened when someone of authority talks down their nose at me, so I'll put up a defence and try and match them in "size" - it's not exactly anything personal, but that's just my gut reaction to being threatened.
I also think if we all lived being blunt and not telling lies, no one would have friends. I wouldn't say it was "using" like Vicky mentioned, because I really don't like the term "using someone/people". I agree with her that being lonely sucks though.
