Oh no; what happened to the idea for this thread!?

So I want to ask you this question.
When you're online and writing a paragraph response, do you use ';' (semicolon) to sound more intelligent?
EXAMPLE:
Some people like to write using their common sense; others don't think at all.
A semi colon?
Here's the thing about semi colons... they don't make you look smarter because from what I've noticed, most people don't know when to use them.
Lesson:
Semi colons can only be used to combine two complete sentences that are related or with an adverbial conjunction paired with a comma.
Example 1:
The can ran quickly; it stumbled over my foot.
Example 2:
The cat ran quickly; however, it farted rainbows and was able to float over my foot.
I think there's one more use but who cares ?
The title is quite misleading. Though yes, I do use semicolons, but that's because I know how to use them. I don't use them that often, though.
Semicolons make people seem pretentious when used in an online setting.

As for the subject at hand, yes I do use the option of the semicolon when it is deemed necessary or if I feel like using it for the hell of it. Mainly I use it when I am being to lazy to actually write out two full sentences.

I mostly came in here to post the fact that I really wanted to rep you for this post, but I have to spread rep around first or something.
On topic, sorta: semicolons are sick.
Also, here's a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal and Danny Trejo having a fantastic time in the major motion picture "Bubble Boy."
Let's go into the "archives" in "Washington D.C." and find out how people "masturbated" in the "roaring 20's."
Crao Porr Cock8. Bitch.
I don't think they make anyone look that intelligent, regardless if you know how to use them or not. Half the time I don't notice them when I read a post, mainly because no one uses them.
I know how to use them, but I use them in other instances too. Sometimes miss the shift button, and end up using its slightly unattractive brother, the colon.
Dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun.
I don't really use semi colons to sound more intelligent; I use semi colons because it's proper grammar, and I'm a total grammar whore.
SPOILER!!:
Wow. Is this really what the forum has been driven into?
ARE ALL THE OTHER TOPICS MEANINGLESS NOW?!
Ah, well... I'll just contribute by saying I do know how to use them but I don't.
My things:
Using them; properly is for; suckers?
^^;;
I mostly just use them in emotes; they don't really strike me as being all that necessary.

I use them, not to appear smart or anything, but only because I care enough about my grammar to make attempts at using them properly. I don't always get them right, but practice makes perfect.
Has anyone really been as; far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense
I don't believe in semicolons. The Gutenberg Bible didn't have a single semicolon in it, and that was the first book ever written. Therefore, semicolons are made up pieces of shit and should be exterminated like how Hitler exterminated the Jews.
Actually, that was a bad example. Hitler didn't exterminate the Jews, because there are still Jew people around today. I guess semicolons are okay, then. Thanks a lot, Jews.
Why the hell are they called semi-colons, anyway? Doesn't semi mean half? Last I checked, half of : is .. But no, we have to call it a period.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Yes, I do use them at times. They do make you seem smarter. xP

Not just in an internet setting. I used semicolons many times in most of my senior papers. My teacher was impressed mostly because some of the other brain-dead slackers in my class might not even know what a semicolon is.
Semicolons, colons, and even the common comma when used in less intelligent posts, all make the user feel smarter. The same way CAPS seem like you are yelling and txt talk seems like your 7 years old and 1337 makes you look like you speak gibberish.
FINISH HIM!
I really don't use semi-colons too often on the internet. I may use them in a more formal setting, but I don't consider an internet forum to be that formal. I think they are considered pretentious because most of the time they are forced. I believe most of the time it is more natural for both typing and reading when semi-colons are not used. They are rarely required, and most of the time when they are, there are much easier ways to phrase what you are trying to say.
There really is no purpose in using semi-colons in that context unless you are writing something like a medical journal. It is just another example of why English grammar is horrible. If you don't know how to use semi-colons correctly, don't use them at all!
I don't use semi-colons, cause well simply i'm a boss. And like a boss I don't use unnecessary things. Grammar can suck it ha.
I only use semi colons when typing the winking smiley. Observe:

This post should be renamed to Semicolon or something cause the title is misleading
otherwise then that this has got to be the most educational post on semicolons on the internet, I learned a lot today.
Next week the comma, when is it comma splice, when isn't it?
also what the hell is this thing>?
The above poster is correct!! And what about the all-important ampersand!? Huh!? Does ANYONE EVEN KNOW how to use this symbol: "&" NO! They didn't even know it was called an ampersand unless they saw that one episode of Harvey Birdman!

Then came the ; and & and somehow got placed into Youtube video parse links, in which makes me wonder about taking a break from Youtube, as they look like a bunch of dolts with the in their parse links- it makes me want to go back to playing some kind of Final Fantasy and holding my PSP as my only pet and thinking over and over why Genta Ismajli won't return my call.
