Just so you all know, this forum still exists - it's currently hiding, but none of the posts in there have disappeared or anything like that. I want some honest opinions on what to do with the section before it resurfaces. Normally I post this stuff in the Announcements section, but I feel like those don't really get as much attention as they should. So, here's the skinny:

Do you still want the HWG forum?

I'll leave this to a poll, but if you have a strong opinion on the matter, I'd suggest you post some words as well. You have until Saturday night.

I'm bumping this, because the thread only has two votes (and I haven't even voted yet!) and zero responses. I am also extending the deadline two more days, since people may not have noticed it because it was stickied. The irony.

I'll chip in, here.

I like the idea of having somewhere to get away from "official posting", if you will. Just play games, look at jokes, post funny pictures you've seen, etc. I actually believe that some of the General Chat threads should have gone into a H/WG forum instead. Funny/cute videos, pictures, jokes, stories, stuff like that. However, I would put a limit on how much it holds. As in, if a thread hasn't been posted updated in a week, it goes bye-bye. That will free up space normally used by thousands of crappy threads. (Also, disable signatures and such ... but I think that might have been before the update, too.)

I found it to be friendly to newcomers, used to love it when I first joined TFF, later not so much, it still had some fun threads, so yea, bring back Humor & Word Games section of the forums.

For those responding; just narrow it down to word games and let the random joke threads get dissolved into GC? Or keep it as is?


edit: oh, and I'd likely nuke the majority of threads currently in there anyway. I mean, that is a ton of wasted space, anything past that first page.

I say pretty much get rid of the joke part of it, the word games are what brings people in really anyway.

There definitely needs to be a forum for word games and people need to stop posting them in GC, as they don't qualify as discussion threads. Enforcement of this would be nice as well.

I never ever post or read that part of the forums. But then again, I pretty much stick to lurking ID and posting in GC. Regardless, who am I to vote against something that so many members use and enjoy? Is it really harming anything? Cramped for space?

I don't use it, but others seem to like it. Its a break from the usual forum business. However, the character counts might get in the way of the object of these word games being that they may only need a few characters a post. Something to thonl about. I don't mind the humour/word game forums. They never did any harm to anyone to the best of my knowledge.

If it would be moved, maybe make a social group or something. That way people can join and use it as much as they please without abusing the post counts.

I like the idea of making it a Social Group. I'm just not sure if people would realize they need to go to it to post word games. New members would probably just dump it in GC.

There is a bad habit of keeping stuff stickied way past it's due date. People don't read sticky stuff because most of them is just old-ass, dead threads that have been around for years. I cleaned up some of them like old art contests. We don't need art contests from 2009 stickied.

I'd move it out of GC right onto the index so I can actually know what the new posts in GC are.

Position it right above ID. For some reason that amuses me.

I'm not opposed to it being on the index, I suppose. If we do that though, it would go to the bottom of the category. It might be nice to separate it from General Chat.

If the social group is public, anyone can see its contents. Anyone can join freely, and last I checked, activity can be seen from the activity stream. New members too I imagine. Its still an option. Guests won't see it obviously.

Yoko raises a good point--isn't the 30-character limit forum-wide with no room for exemptions? How is Word Games to function under that?

I say keep it as a word games forum but just clear it out a bit. I don't think I've ever gone past the first page and even then it's usually just things like that add a word and take one away game and some of the stuff that's put there isn't word game or joke related. Could it just be a forum where you post random stuff that doesn't belong anywhere else?

EDIT: Also I third Yoko's point and second Alpha's statement.

Keep them, really do it. For when people like Fate come back, they have something to do.

Humor/Games and Welcome Lobby haven't added to post counts for a while now, if my memory serves right. It's always been an exception to the general forum rules, just so people wouldn't clutter up GC with whatever goes on in there. Shouldn't be impossible to exempt it from the character limit.

Making it into a social group would most likely backfire in practice. Newer members can hardly tell the difference between General FF and GC--tucking word games away into an even more obscure part of the forums is just asking for a mispost, or 10. Plus, its a legit forum with decent activity, even if it is spammy. It'd be a waste to hide it.

The character limit is a global setting, not a forum setting like adding to post count. Making it forum specific would require a modification to be created.

Well sure I could do it the lazy way in 3 minutes. Or, I could do it the correct way and add a settings group to the admin CP so you can choose the forum IDs whenever you want. Or option 3, I do it the lazy way first while working on the correct way.

Well a lot of requests aren't impossible. It's just varying degrees of how much of a pain in the ass it is to implement. I sometimes think a few of their programmers write code while intoxicated.
