    gamer fitness

have you ever looked in the mirror didn't like what you saw?
well thats what happened to me about 4 years ago.
after my junk food quest (read about it in the "what do you eat while gaming" thread) it appeared that i had gained a rather large amount of weight.
so to fix this problem i started gaming a little less and exercising a little more (plus a bit of my family's cooking)
it took me 3 years to do it but i had finally lost the weight.
i could look in the mirror and be okay with the way i look.

well now that thats out of the way

Wheres the "get off your ass" choice?

I work out 3 times a week to keep myself at an average weight of 180-200 lbs.
I eat like crap, but still keep myself fairly fit.

Let go of ALL BLOODY EXCUSES! If you want to lose weight/be healthy n fit as much as you whine then you make it a priority. In regards to exercise, take on a black&white mentality..ie. you either fking do it or you dont. It doesnt matter if your feeling tired. All the more reason you should do it, exercise should invigorate you. An 1.5- 2hrs on the treadmill does it for me but its important (esp if you havent been physically active for a while) that you start small, take it day by day or else you'll (seriously) injure yourself Oh and a huge one, this is really important..Dont be so hard on yourself. You ate something your not supposed to?? Big fkn deal, Everyday's a new day. If people are giving you a hard time tell em to fk off your doing this for you. And cut out that putrid shit 'softdrink', the only thing every single living thing on this planet should be drinking is (filtered) WATER.. Thats my 2 cents my god I sound like a personal trainer Im notXD

Yeah there really should be an exercise choice. A healthy diet only goes so far; you need to get that blood flowing and those muscles moving. Mix in some cardio with weight lifting and you'll be golden. Not only does it burn calories and fat, but it also helps to build muscle. Plus, at the end of the day, if you have a good workout, you can pretty much game guilt-free

Actually, what you eat is the best way to start. If you are actually obese, just running won't really do much for you unless you have the diet to back it up. Not to say, "don't run" or Pete's wrong. But you should get what I mean.

Running alone won't do much either way. You need more than just a cardio work out.

I have a sister who is "****ing" awesome, as you put it. She has super fast digestion. Couldn't gain ten pounds unless you stuffed her with fatty foods for over a year. Poor girl.

Anyway. Great topic, saio (keep 'em coming!). I have been doing Bruce Lee stretches for quite a while now (I'm not kidding, just his warm-ups are enough for me) and I never turn down junk-food. (It's there already, okay?) and I still manage to keep pretty trim. But... now I need a smaller wardrobe and I hate shopping with my mother (for more, see my thread on "incident's while shopping with your parents"

    Re: gamer fitness

I just finished an Insanity workout, actually. I am drenched and feel amazing. Part of the reason I workout regularly is for vanity and wanting to wear whatever I want, and a bigger part is because it makes me feel better. It's huge stress relief (which I need) and the endorphin high after a really intense workout is actually pretty addicting. But I go through lazy phases where I'm off for a week or two and then it takes a few workouts to get back into craving it again.

As for diet, I'm at my best when I'm eating at home. I work at a restaurant, though, and I eat for free so sometimes I get a little carried away. But for the most part, I stick to turkey or fish (grilled) sandwiches.... with lots of pickles. A salmon burger really helps put my cravings for real burgers at ease. Sometimes I go for a salad, but I don't really get a lunch break, so it's easier to take quick (huge) bites of sandwich and then run off to the next table.

I have a whey protein and coconut milk smoothie after workouts, usually followed by a glass of carrot juice. I found a whey protein that uses grass-fed milk and sweetens with stevia and it tastes amazing. I'm hooked.

I wouldn't call myself a health nut... I definitely still eat cookies and drink beer and get really excited about eating pizza (like at least once a week)... but I do try to put things into my body that will keep me strong and energized. And I try to make my eating habits fun. If I want something indulgent, I eat it. I regulate pretty well and never feel wanting. Also I love my body and accept that sometimes my tummy will be a little fluffier than other times. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to. The only pressure I put on myself is to feel healthy.

I heard that drinking cold water actually helps you lose weight, because your body has to heat up the water, which burns calories and fat. I'm not sure how true that is or how much it would really help in the grand scheme of things though.

    Re: gamer fitness

Honestly don't take my word for it because I've never been anything but slim, but I see the whole weight-loss thing as a product of logic and self-control.

Don't snack. At all. Ever. You don't need 3 meals a day and snacks to survive, and if you have them (even healthy snacks) you're taking in more calories than necessary. This is a routine thing, so you may slip up a few times. Occasionally I won't eat lunch, there are actually no terrible side-effects if you miss lunch once or twice a week.

I'd say that if you stick to a simple routine, you'll find it easier to stick to. Atkins, Weight-Watchers, calorie-counting, all that stuff is easier to give up on because it requires extra work. If you eat less frequently you shouldn't need to worry so much about the calories you're taking in. If you eat like an elephant then obviously cut down on portions.

Gyms are easy to give up on, as is taking time to lift weights. Walk places. If you go to school/college/uni/work or whatever, try and walk, or take a combination of walking + public transportation. I walk 1.5 miles a day to catch my bus, which keeps me relatively fit. If you can avoid driving or if you can catch a bus or train from a stop that is further away, you can make a huge distance if you do it everyday. It's also easier to work into a routine because it doesn't require anything 'extra' from you, if it is in fact a part of your commute.

Oh God, now I'm one of those people who give out advice on a topic they know nothing about...

The whole three meals a day isn't the best if you are having big meals each time. I have always learned that you have a big meal for breakfast, to load up for energy for the day that you will burn off. Have a smaller meal for dinner as it will not be burned as easily and just be turned to fat while you sleep.

Low calorie foods are also great to snack on, but really, portioning is everything. Eat what you want, but know if it is not the best food, have smaller amounts.

Oooooh, my dear, don't envy me. It's such a waste. I wasn't always like that. I went through a phase every teenage girl went through.

I'm active in other ways. I never really was a heavy gamer. I used to buy chips and other junkfood, but once in a while. I also went through an anorexic phase that I don't want to talk about. It's all about trying to feel good in your own body. If you can't accomplish that, then your life might need a new direction. That's what I went through.

Not totally true. Those who work out often will find that they're always hungry. They need to keep their metabolism going so something's always burning. Snacks are fantastic. Especially for those who are active and can't wait until the next mealtime. It's all about making moderate snack sizes and healthiness yadayada. Any nutritional professional will tell you this.

If you're stuck on what to do and how to do it, talk to a nutritional professional/personal trainer. It's totally worth it and their advice is valid.

I LOVE fruit. Lol I guess I do lose weight and have always been thin but I just dont crave the shit(chips, chocolate, lollies, doughnutsDXetc) other people do I just dont have an appetite for it. Fruit (organic) makes me drool(like SephirothXD). Its the only thing I crave I swear junk food makes me puke.

I Like Some Vegetables, So I Wouldn't Mind Having A Few Here And There, But Not My Favourite Option. If You Took A 30 Minute Walk Everyday, You Would Actually See A Difference It Could Make In Your Life. Walk & Breathe Is My Recommendation For Everyone Actually. You Can Do Things On Top Of That If You Wish, But I'm Telling You, These Little Things Can Really Improve Your Way Of Life. Yeah, Its All Good If You Game A Lot, Just Take Some Time To Do Something Active Or Healthy In Your Day, It Will Change Your Life.
I agree with everything. I like some vegetables as well and have it in my lunch and dinner but I prefer fruit.

Ok some people see exercise as a chore. Not for me. I fkng love it. Exercise gives me mental clarity. It is just as much a mental thing as it is physical. Do not underestimate such a thing. It makes me feel so good on all levels- body, mind and spirit. I just feel clean to put it simply. Fitting into pretty clothes and just looking attractive for other peoples approval does not do it for me. I love getting out of bed and not being out of breath just basically being fit and strong to do the things I love that involve physical endurance or just "moving". Im not a health nut although Id love to be.. eating shit and not exercising catches up with you. I dont want to be stuck in a nursing home or a burden to anyone cause I cant fking move. Hopefully I'll be doing my daily jog/walk ALONE and playing videogames like a bossXDD

I'm surprised a lot of you actually know the correct methods for a healthy lifestyle. Having studied personal fitness and nutrition myself and making practical use of the knowledge, I've learned a few things. Everyone is different and people will react differently to different types of programs/foods and routines. There are a few things that are certain though.

    1. The more often you eat, the better. Consistent food intake makes your metabolism function creating a steady flux which will in turn allow your body to maintain a healthier weight. Having said that, its ideal to spread your meals out into 5 - 6 times a day. Some would be surprised that they already do this. A meal could be seen as a snack, as long as your daily caloric intakes are met.

    2. Exercise is ESSENTIAL to a healthy body. I don't feel its necessary to explain why. This could be 30 minutes of cardio workout per day, or it could be weight training. Either one is fine as long as you are active. Taking up a sport is a fantastic way of exorcising if you find gyms and running monotonous/boring. Tennis creates the ultimate athletes so perhaps look into starting that if you want to get active and healthy.

    3. Sometimes its okay to eat the junkier foods as it causes a spike in your metabolic rate, but this should be limited to one day of the week. If you find yourself snacking on fatty oiled foods and sugary treats you will notice that your progress will slow down.

you can eat as much as you want as long as its good foods.

Water is actually key to losing weight. The more water you drink, the less hunger you'll experience throughout the day. Fun fact, a lot of the time you think you're hungry, you're actually thirsty! It's science!

Oh, and seriously, exercise. It's good for you.

This advice especially applies to swimmers! just because you're in water that doesnt mean you arn't also sweating. The hunger assosiated with post-swimming is usually caused by thirst/dehydration.
