Notable Quotations...tidbits of wisdom, knowledge, truth, speculation and on occasion snarkiness that are remembered throughout the ages as words and phrases that concern things that should be considered, thought about, embraced, or shunned. Many memorable quotes come from the most brilliant minds of the ages, and as such we are better able to remember their teachings.
I'm sure all of you have read or heard quotes somewhere that had some kind of effect on you. They might have been lighthearted, they might have been deep. Maybe they rang of truths, personal or otherwise. And maybe they made you feel wiser just for having read them.
In this thread we post some of our favorite quotations, and discuss said quotes, and your opinions on them. I'll lead off with a couple....
"We are students of words; we are shut up in schools, and colleges, and recitation rooms, for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bag of wind, a memory of words, and do not know a thing."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”
-Marie Curie
"C'est en faisant n'importe quoi qu'on devient n'importe qui" - It's by doing whatever we want that we become whoever we are. (please correct if translation is wrong)
-Anonymous
"Americans like to talk or be told about Democracy.
But, when put to the test, usually find it to be an 'inconvenience.' We have opted instead for an authoritarian system disguised as a Democracy. We pay through the nose for an enormous joke-of-a-government, let it push us around, and then wonder how all those assholes got in there."
-Frank Zappa
(TFF Family):

"HELLO GUYS!"
"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
~Aesop
I like this one because some people, whenever they are asked to do something, just feels like it's not a big difference, and they just do it because they want to. But even if all they did was go get this or that, or lend the other person something, that's still very much appreciated. So you shouldn't think that a tiny favor is of little or no importance, because it is.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."
~Abraham Lincoln
I really like this one, because I have a tendency to not think about what I say and just say it. It means that you should think twice before saying what you want. If you say nothing, people will only think that you're a fool, they don't know it. However, if you do choose to speak out, and you say something stupid, they'll lose all doubt that you aren't a fool. Everyone's a little rash, so this should be something to keep in mind.
Curiosity Conquers, So Click:
One of the most notable quotes comes surprisingly from Mariah Carey.
"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean, I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff."
This quote indicates that idiots shouldn't be allowed to make quotes.
Another one of my favorite quotes comes from the mouth of Brooke Shields.
"Smoking kills. If you're killed, you lost a very important part of your life."
Even though it's completely ridiculous, it kind of makes perfect sense. I mean, if you're killed, then you have lost a very important part of your life; the life part.
And finally, a quote from one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Former Vice President of the United States Dan Quayle.
"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
I live my life by quotes like these.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy - Martin Luther King Jr.
This is my favorite quote because it says that every one of us acts differently under the challenge and in that moment we show our true self and how much do we truly worth.
Guns don't kill people, stupid people with guns kill - Chris Rock
Well he's completely right but this also is funny. What can you espect from stand up comedian.
What you sow is what you reap...
-if you plant a corn you will, you will reap a corn! simple principle isn't it? But what if it goes like this.... if you plant hatred, of course you will reap a lot of hatred... and it may grow worst and worst!!
Charity [LOVE, the unconditional one] suffereth long, and is kind, charity envieth not, charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up - 1 Corinthians 13:4
-I love this verse, I hope some of the people will practice this kind of love. Something that is worth fighting for!!!
Come son of Jor-El, kneel before Zod!
Snootchie-bootchies. Ehehehehe! - Jay
Never have I found a more appropriate thing to say after smashing someone over the head with a baseball bat from behind and running. See the video in my sig's spoiler to see it being said.

"You're never beaten until you admit it."
- General George S. Patton
It's true, no one can beat you until you get frustrated, depressed, or die. For every time that you respawn take it as an opertunity to respawn and surge forward, remeber even if you die taking him out, you've still accomplished something.
And in other news, Today is Nintendog adoption day. Remeber that all remaining puppies will be euthanized at the end of the day so to make your selections before 7:30.
"Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves." -Abraham Lincoln
He has a lot of good ones like that. that was the shortest, and best for a signature. He had a lot of sarcastic and witty humor. This is just a good dig at polite society.
"Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." -Proverbs 12:1
I love the bluntness of the last part of this verse. It's also true, though! Proverbs is a great book.
"How much longer do I have to be with you people?!" -Jesus Christ.
Not an exact quote, but I remember reading it at least once. It was in reference to his disciples, who were being dumb. I like it, because it denotes a bit of humanity in Jesus, and some humor too.
"It was like the Manifest Destiny all over again, except, instead of taking and consuming everything in their paths for God, they did so with a certain fervor and sense of entitlement for their new Gods... themselves." -Five Iron Frenzy, American Kryptonite
A statement about consumerism in the modern day US.
"I know! I was there! I did it! It happened!" -Aaron Barrett (or was it Scott?) from Reel Big Fish
I like a lot of the things they said on their live album. They're such dorks, it's awesome.
"Dude, we're going to the park!" -My friend Alex
I like this quote, because it was said when he was drunk, and I've never seen him drunk. So any stories of him being drunk need to be latched on to. Apparently, though, they were walking home, and someone mentioned going to the park, and so he got it in his head that it was the best idea ever, and he kept on repeating it.
I can't really think of anything else right now. There are probably others, though. Anyhoo...
Wuv, Yer Mom
My favourite quote will always be:
"What you pursue will be yours, but you will lose something dear." ~ Final Fantasy VII
It makes me wonder if anything I've needed was actually worth it, and how I could compare it to something else. I have a few examples, but anyway... >>;
"To live is to not run away." ~ Yakuza
If you have problems, its better to stand up and face them, than to turn and run from them as if they're not there. I try not to run away from my problems, and I deal with them as soon as I can. People who run away are weak and pathetic.
"Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." ~ Unknown.
Pretty self explanatory.
"Minds are like parachutes; they only funtion when open." ~ Unknown.
You shouldn't take what you believe and leave it at that. By opening your mind, so many more possibilities come into light.
"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." ~ Budda
Whats happening now is more important than anything you've done in the past, and is nothing but a prelude to what is about to come. *feels like I made my own quote*
"If God wanted me to bend over, he'd put diamonds on the floor." ~ Can't remember... oldish, female comedian. >>;
This quote made me laugh.
I have many more, but... those are my favourites. ^^;
"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
I like this quote because..well it's true. I feel sad that people nowadays don't care or do anything to stop bad things that are going around them. I can understand not doing anything for fear out of possibly becoming a casuality in the process of trying to help someone in need but I'd still do it regardless.
Sig and ave made by Violet, thanks again Violet!
"You guys may not know this, but I consider myself…a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one. So were two…so there was two of us in the pack. I…I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later.
And 6 months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys. I thought…wait a second, could it be. And now I know for sure, I just added 2 more guys to my wolf pack. 4 of us wolves running around the desert together, in Las Vegas looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, we make a toast!"
-Alan, from the movie "The Hangover".
This is probably the quote of the year, if not at least the decade to be honest. Although it's fairly humorable to read it out loud, watching Alan say it makes the whole thing hysterical. Definitely a movie I'd recommend, go see it if you haven't already, or don't because I'm sure most of you aren't old enough to see R rated films anyways lol.
also, Sig check for post of the year!

Where do I begin....
"Guys, either I drank way too much last night, or I'm pregnant."- Me, the first time I ever threw up the morning after drinking.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and all the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.- Kenny Powers, Eastbound and Down It's true.
Turtle: This is where you should be living, Vince. In a kingdom, like a prince.
Eric: Don't you mean in a kingdom like a king, you idiot?
Vince: Nah, E. Everyone wants to kill the king. But the prince, he just sails along telling all the ladies, "One day I'm gonna be king." - All I have to say is hell yeah.
"If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough."- Roger Allen Wade. This is my life motto. If you do dumb shit, you'd better be able to take what's coming.
"Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember but the story."- Tim O' Brien, The Things They Carried.
This quote pretty much means everything to me. Life isn't about just listing all the places you've been, but rather making your mark in it and having something to be remembered by.
"Just 'cause I don't run my mouth don't mean I got nothin' to say."- Drive by Truckers "Marry Me"
and lastly
"Yer killin' me Smalls!"- The Sandlot
SOLDIERcHoSeNCrao Porr Cock8- Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers
"Putting your life on the line is really living. Everything else is just television."
-Simon Hunt, The Hunting Party (played by Richard Gere)
'It's not that I'm lazy, it's just that I don't care." - Peter - Office Space
Lew Dodgson: You shouldn't use my name.
Dennis Nedry: [loudly] Dodgson, Dodgson, we have Dodgson here! See? Nobody cares. Nice hat! What are ya tryin' to look like - a secret agent? from Jurassic Park.
"I figured if I study high, take the test high, get high scores. Right? right? riighhhtttt." Red and Method Man in How High.
More Jurassic Park
John Hammond: All major theme parks have had delays. When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked!
Dr. Ian Malcolm: But, John. If the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.

"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time."
Bertrand Russell
"We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology."
Carl Sagan
"I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true."
Carl Sagan
"Used games are the cancer that is killing the metaphorical Kylie Minogue that is our humble game industry."

"Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman. You only call her a bitch because she won't let you get that *****." Aesop Rock - Daylight
"Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore, trust the physician and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility." - Khalil Gibran
"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it’s yours." - Ayn Rand
About the only memorable ones that come off the top of my head.
Edit:
I always rather liked Hamlet's Soliloquy in William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep—
No more—and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to. 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep—
To sleep—perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub!
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause—there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of disprized love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death
The undiscover'd country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action. Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remembered.
