Sometimes crying is a way to help ease pain, or...for some cutting themselves. It's hard for most to get through pain and suddenly suck it up. Going through life has its up's and down's its how we overcome it that shows how we feel. Ok.. Don't think I don't know a thing or two about pain. I'm 26 years old and I have experienced my bit and then some, and there will be more to come, I'm sure. Even so, the last time I cried was when I was 9 and my grandfather died. My point was crying.. or cutting doesn't help. I have no compassion for people who doesn't do anything about their shit. If they do or atleast try and I mean try, not just give up aftyer a couple of attempts I will have some compassion.

Winter specifically stated in his example that he wasn't one of those types who need an 'emotional dumpster'. And as he does have a lot of problems to deal with, and no outlet like an emotional dumpster, it does show that emos could deal with things a lot better...

Hell even I got the occasional drama like the rent or something coming up when I've been broke and in debt, but would I ever cut my wrists or wear pants which would kill every hope I could ever have of having kids? **** no...

Once again, most teenagers could deal with things a lot better. Most teenagers are idiots. Like James said, it's just a trend that they'll eventually grow out of. I KIND of agree with Robin on the fact that whining about normal teenage problems doesn't solve anything. He's definately got a point on the emo's that really take it too seriously getting to grips with reality and doing something about it.

I definitely agree with that. I've seen people that don't fit in with the stereotype in any way whatsoever, yet when caught crying or talking about something that's hurt them it's considered "emo". Which pisses me off a little, really... That's not emo. That's completely standard emotion. Everybody gets sad and all.

As for the butterknife thing.. Not sure what to say about that. I agree with you in the sence of those that are doing it for attention, but I've seen people that are legitimately self-harming barely pierce the skin. People cut for different reasons and all. Different ways, too. Some burn. But yeah... Butterknife scratches shouldn't be passed off as entirely 'nothing' in the sence of those that aren't doing it for attention.

True. That's another nasty side effect of the emo trend, any time someone exhibits any emotion at all they're called emo. On the opposite end of the spectrum, emos will say "we're just not afraid to show our emotions!" but they tend to forget that there are OTHER emotions out there than just angst and misery. It's fine to be sad and to cry if something that warrants it happens, it's fine to even show it...but you have to carry on. If you let that control you, then it just makes your entire outlook turn into the bleak "my bleeding soul is an empty void and all life surrounds me with its blackness" crap.

I've read in a few places that cutting is more common amongst girls, whereas guys prefer burning. I could never EVER burn...cutting is one thing but the pain of being burned is in a whole different league. As for butter knives...well, snapping yourself with a rubber band would be more effective, I actually know a girl who did that to substitute cutting...kinda weird.

Ronin - I've seen rubber-band snapping too. That seems to be mainly the work of phychologists. They often recommend it as to reduce harm. Mine actually recommended it to me, lol. A kind of way to slowly get themselves off cutting by using an alternate method of less harmful self-harm.

But as I said, I don't think methods of self harm that don't slice flesh should be trivialised at all.

im emo and people dont seem to mind me or my freinds lots of emo's in my school my grade bout 1/5 the whole high school about bout lil more thana qwarter but big conflict between us and goths i have a goth freind though : (

There really needs to be a better way than self-harm for emos to deal with issues. Of course they always say that the physical pain distracts them from the emotional, which I think is just as bad. I have heard that they get addicted to the rush cutting provides, and that the body can actually crave the sensation of being cut. If that's true, and the body can actually become addicted to it, that's pretty dangerous...

Ronin: The body can become addicted to it, like pretty much any drug. Pain releases endorphins, the happy-making things in your brain. I'm not too sure about some drugs, but I do know that alot make the brain release this exact chemical. Of course, drugs usually have many other side effects also. Cutting just releases endorphins. And I'm guessing it's more convienient than drugs. Can't be fined/jailed for it and all. I know people that have started cutting as part of the 'emo trend' and then quite literally gotten addicted to it and been unable to stop. It's always hard to stop.

So I was right >_< Damn, that's pretty bad then. Not that it's anywhere near drugs, but just any habit of self-harm is, well, harmful. So what would make the addiction go away then? Don't more healthy alternatives like exercise and such produce endorphines? Although I suppose cutting is turned to since it's so much easier than exercise. Doesn't require buying weights or a gym membership, just grab a blade and slice away. And it's not just emos who seek attention through what they do, it's just most groups in general don't seem to be quite so self destructive...
I'm talking before the endorphin addiction of course. :D

And as for the endorphin rush, there are better ways as you said, like exercise. And to max it, they could play contact sports. You'd get both the exercise endorphins AND the pain endorphins, right?
Plus less if any ugly scarring. ^^

Out of all the trends I've seen though, none has irritated me more than the "supposed emo" kid. The self-depressed teenager with an anime fetish and an ignorant view of the world.

As for the real-life version of these kids, I hope they become shamed for what they did when they grow up and realize how stupid they looked and acted. I know I will when years ago in middle-school I had a similar haircut though it was actually based on a lead singer's style before the emo genre actually became popular. Honestly it's basically just the backwards version of the mullet [short front, long back--long front, short back]. Kind of ironic isn't it?

Anyway, the real emo's are still back in the 80's as everyone else should know and they weren't half bad. It was simply the music industry that revived the music and gave it a new fashion sense since boy bands and nu-metal/rap-metal was beginning to die awhile after 2000. It just makes me facepalm myself, hard, when seeing or hearing about this trend and while the music scene has died down the role-playing community is still going strong with these annoying kids. I'd ban them all if I could even if it meant losing a lot of members. The peace would be worth it. Jintatsu is an exception, however. Can't say I agree with everything he says or does, but he isn't as childish or moronic as the fakers who try to be something their not.

Ahhh, this is a horrible topic, but I;m so used to being called an Emo, it used to be really constant, but now-days has settled down, I used to and still do mope around, it takes alot to make me smile, and even when i do smile I go back to frowning few seconds later. I've also tried this cutting thing......it really don't see how it works, but you must keep in mind people have different ways to cope with shit and stress. lmao, you really don't like otakus and wapanese do you? But then again, neither do I. Anime does seem to have permeated the emo trend, probably in thanks to Hot Topic. One thing that really pisses me off is when kids will try very poorly to dress in a J-rock dress style, but it just comes off as really messed up emo because they buy everything at Hot Topic and it's a mish-mash of ugly clothes. Or they'll try to pull off a J-rock haircut and then people just think they're scene or emo, even though J-rockers have been doing haircuts like those for WAY longer. I predict J-rock is going to be the next trend, all the otakus are bringing alot of it to the forefront and it will only spread (or maybe it won't spread, but there are so many otakus out there it doesn't matter).

Personally, I couldn't care less about emo people unless they are the posers. The pants annoy me slightly because somehow, the boys at my school can still get those tight little things to sag....that kind of crap annoys me to no end be cause if the pants are tight enough for me to see the shape of your "wee" wee, I shouldn't still be able to see your purple Barney underwear! ><

The music and other clothes and make-up are just a stupid trend that other kids picked up. Yay for trends. I like the hair though. Some guys look hot with shag cuts.

I don't hate real emos, just the fakers that do it because they saw some nice posters of some generic band with the same fashion. Guys in the right clothes=good looking though.

I agree with bleachfangirl, soem of them follow the trend to look 'cool'. I hate that; if they arn't clever enough to use their own fashion then they need to take a look in teh mirror... Stereotype would say they do that anyway, which leads me onto stereotyping.

I hate that, just because some people slit their wrists and sit in the dark 'reading poetry' doesnt mena that all of them do it. How can you sit in the dark and read poetry anyway? I one heard a guy say "I hate emo's, I went to a party with this guy and all he did was sit in a room and listen to music in the dark", I say at least he isnt out breaking fences with his legs and starting fights on 12 year olds like some people in England. Keep him in the dark being depressed and if that's what makes him happy (his oxymoron of a life), then leave him be.

Tight jeans too, not everyone wears them. You don't have to follow a trend to like music. I like some of the hairstyles they have and I think in that respect that they are innovators. Staying with your hair greasy and black aint my thing so taking care of yourself and being vain isnt bad to me, pretty boys do it too and they get praised for it.

What I will say though is that sell-out bands annoy me, turning to emo tendencies to make themselves more popular. Commercialisation is a pet peeve of mine, I dispise it. What happened to Still Remains, that new song sucks monkey.

On a whole, I couldn't give a damn what they do as long as they don't try to drag me in with them and I have more important things to do with my time than stress about how much their fashion gets on my nerves. If you have enough time to observe what tehy are doing then you are spending too much time with people you obviously don't like, so walk away.

Its really not what music you listen to that makes someone emo. its more the "look" and how they act. I listen to plenty of rock music that alot of people would consider being emo but i'm not emo in any way shape or form. and i'm kind of sick of people labeling people. its the world,its life,deal with it,you're gonna have people who complain and cry about their life but you cant do anything about it its all up to them to help themselves.(i'm not yelling at anyone who has replied or started this thread,just stating my opinion)

To be honest I think the people who are abusive, aggressive and insulting to emo's is a much worse problem then the fad of being an emo. There are fads everywhere, Wu-Tang posers are no different in their ways then emo's in that they are posing just as much.

I think this whole Hate-Emo craze going around is simply pathetic. So what if they act depressed if they're not, I know a fair few emo's who are genuinely depressed, whether or not it's a coincidence that some depressed people turn emo, or whether a genuinely depressed person is naturally drawn to that culture I'm not sure.

I would much rather be some attention-seeking, black inclined, generally nice emo; then some attention-seeking, random bashing, bagging pants wearing, spitting, cursing, abusive, asshole Wu-Tang anyday.

I mean people might not like the emo culture, but since when is their culture more damaging to society and to a persons self then a cultural group who goes around drunk bashing and mocking every emo they see. Just as it's fashionable for emo's to be depressed and wear tight pants, it's now fashionable to wu-tangs to be mega-aggressive and abusive. That behavior is just so ugly to me.

I'm not having a go at all Wu-Tang's is general, but that is just how the wu-tang culture is around here, and it really just annoys me. So now it's also fashionable to insult and mock people who genuinely have problems by calling them 'emo' as well.

I just hate this whole cynical cultural phenomenon at the moment to attack everything and anything, I don't see why people can't just be positive. :)

Not all emos are the same, so to judge them all based on the same things would be stereotyping. Though, from a lot of emos that I've met, they've been complete nobs. Yes, they are whiney to an extreme exaggeration, and over the top about most things, and really self-centered. These are the whiney flipping retarded emos, but some of them I know are only into the trend and music.

I have two friends who are emo [Coincidentally, they're sitting right next to me]. One of them used to self harm LOADS, and show it off to the entire world. She'd post pictures of her scars on websites and things like that, and would actually cut herself in school and stuff. But then I guess she just realised how stupid she was being, and now she keeps it to herself, and doesn't do it too often anymore. Now she's just into the fashion, etc.

So, the retarded emos will eventually grow out of it, and the trend will fade.

I don't really like the clothes that much, or the music for that matter, though some of it's okay.

Though, the whole bisexual crap is very annoying. Why would anyone want to pretend that they like a certain gender? That's just stupid and fake =] And the people who self harm for no particular reason [Or a reason that they are making a big deal out of for nothing] **** me right off. Well to start, I don't have a problem with "emos" but with that said, the trend is overrated . The style is alright as long as it's done properly. I actually prefer tighter pants, for girls tight is nice. There's nothing like a good pair of skinny jeans but for guys, I think there should be a limit. I have friends who dress that style, but don't over do it. It's usually just the hair style and tighter pants. Piercings are nice as long as it's flattering and not over done. I have one guy friend who has a Monroe piercing and it actually looks really cool, not homo at all. Just because you walk around with your dads razor from his shaver in your wallet, and show off your wannabe scrapes on your forearms, doesn't make you "emo" I see more and more of the younger kids doing this. Also the music. They think that emo music is any band with a high pitched, singer and using guitars is emo. It's really nothing but a highschool trend/style. When people get older things like this naturally die down.

Also what's the heck is the difference between "emo" and scene?

I don't really care what emo or scene kids do. We get a good laugh from them when the guys wear their sister's jeans, especially when we point it out to them. Some scene chicks can be hot, but it's more the exception to the rule. It's just pretty dumb to me. You're not being an individual by dressing and acting just like everyone else.
