Isn't the fear of dentists simply from the film/book Marathon Man? And the torture imagery then somehow got transferred to other aspects of culture, like childrens' books but obviously toned down the graphical violence.
Two of the worst evils on this planet.
They both can make you wait anxiously in the waiting room. They both have that slight scent of disinfectant... They both have the Dr. before their name...
Doctors from my knowledge seem to be the lesser of the two evils. They can just give you bad news... Yet still people don't like them.
Dentists however... many people I know have irrational fears of the dentists. So what is it about them? The drilling... the aquariums...
That's another thing... why do dentists normally have aquariums? Is it a calming effect or something...
So yeah anyway ^^. Any drama's involving the Dr's? Or... your opinion on the fear factor...
But more importantly... which is the lesser evil? >_>
::Edit:: I forgot the s on Dentists <_< Is a mod able to change that? It's going to bug me... x.x

Not really. I despise going to the dentist. It's not that I can't take the "pain" or anything, I think it's the fact that 1. I can't control what happens to me and my mouth 2. I can't see what the guy/gal is doing with me.
I'm really frightened when it comes to dentists, but although I hate the smell and atmosphere in hospitals, I don't dislike regular doctors at all...
It's such a coincidence this thread came up, since I have a big hole in my tooth which has been aching for months now and is aching right now (seriously). It's been months since I should have gone to the dentist to have it fixed, but I can't pick up the phone and call. It goes against my nature or something.
But I really don't want to lose my tooth I have such great teeth otherways...

Doctor vs Dentist, such dilemma.Itīs weird but I love dentists much more than doctors. To tell you the truth I don't know why,but one thing is sure I hate going to the hospital. The smell, other patients and doctors just creeps me out.Lesser evil?Definitely Dentist but that's just my opinion.

It is funny that the people that scare us most are the ones helps us out, lol. I don't like doctors for the simple fact is once you are in hospital you can't walk out
At the end of the day, it comes down to one hero to save us all.
I don't mind going to doctors or dentists. Doctors keep telling me that I'm perfectly fine, disproving my ridiculous GAD, which relieves me of my anxiety symptoms for at least six months. Though I'm not fond of all the prostitution at doctor's offices. I mean, I went there for a physical a few times, and the guy fondled my balls. They could have at least let a female doctor fondle my balls. I'm not too big on male prostitution.
Dentists used to make me anxious, but then, when I was seven, I severely damaged one of my front teeth, and had to continuously go back and fourth between several dentists in order to repair the tooth. They failed miserably, because now I have a false tooth where the real one used to be. But the experience did teach me that anything that is done to my teeth now won't hurt nearly as bad as what was done to my tooth before. Those assholes gave me several root canals and pulled some teeth without ever considering giving me anesthesia.
I don't fear either. Then again I'm fortunate to have relatively great health, and never any serious ailments other than whatever bug would be going around at the time (don't worry, no sars/ bird/ pig flu).
The only time I've ever had a "bad" experience with the dentist was after I had my wisdom teeth pulled, but that's only the discomfort from having 3 teeth extracted. The meds most definitely made up for it though. Other than that, the entire process was great; they knocked me out, and I woke up about 45 minutes later with a mouthful of gauze and no clue of how I was moved into a "recovery room." Every other dentist visit has been pretty peachy.
As for the drilling, I wouldn't know about that. I brush twice a day and use my floss and mouthwash daily, so no cavities for this fella. My smile isn't as white as I'd like it, but then again coffee does that to ya.
As for doctors, I don't have any fears of them either. Any fears that you have about them are really your own issues. Waiting rooms don't really freak me out, except for the ones in hospital emergency ones... up in Binghamton. Any time I've had to go to the ER, either for myself (once) or for others (too many times), it's almost like a freakshow, ranging from stupid knocked up teens, to those who should be quarantined. True story, I once saw a guy walk in with his thumb in a plastic bag full of ice.
Doctor waiting rooms are a different story though. They don't really freak me out, since the majority of the time they're full of relatively normal people. I do get upset though when some muppet thinks it's a good idea to sit right next to me when they have a wicked cough or some other contagious-looking symptom.
As for the doctors themselves, I've never had a problem or been worried. Then again I've always been in fairly excellent health, so I've never had to worry about getting test results back or anything ominous. I did get STD tested once with my friends for shits and giggles. Waiting for the results was mildly harrowing, but good news ladies, I'm clean as a whistle... and we all know what you can do with a whistle

Neither worry me in fact i keep reminding myself to go to the dentists for a check up and to get some holes filled because my teeth are starting to get sensitive especially when i eat chocolate noooooooo... and i can't have that, yes it hurts to go to the dentist but no pain no gain haha the only thing that scares me about the dentist is the cost to go see them, i went in for a check up three x-rays and $250 dollars later.
Doctors are surprised when they see me i was in hospital once for cellulitis i think it is like a blood infection any way my doctor came to visit and he said that he was surprised to see me in hospital because he never sees me at all. All my doctors that i have, have been really nice and explanatory which is always good when i cut my hand open my doctor wanted to see me every day to keep checking on it because it was in an awkward spot and he was real caring but he kept saying that he wanted to cut it open again and restitch it and i kept saying no way, so he kindly obliged and left it alone haha.

Mmm... I think doctors bother me more. Because they can give the go ahead of blood tests... give you bad news... And I hate going there.
In fact I have to go to the doctor in half an hour and I'm terrified xD. For no good reason <_< But it's not like a fear as in I won't go. Nor is it that I'm afraid of needles. But once I had some blood taken or should I say ALOT @_@ and I nearly fainted. So I'm slightly resistant to having bloods taken xD.
Dentists are okay.. but like mentioned, it's the fact you can't see whats going on. HOWEVER. Once my dentist switched on this like cam and I could watch. But no... I think I rather not see xD
I think there should be... Aquarium CEILINGS! xD You know because when you're lying back in the chair... <_< It's so boring. I always examine the light fittings.
Following the path for truth...
and ending the dream.
Eh, I'm not afraid of either, I just don't like going. It's boring and always takes way too long.
As far as doctors, blood tests and all that don't really have an affect as far as fear. Needles just don't bother me, unlike my older brother who faints at the mere sight of one. The only thing I'm slightly uncomfortable with is them making you get undressed for the physical. I am not fond of people prodding me, especially in places I'd prefer to keep to myself. Thankfully I didn't have to get a Pap smear cause I'm not 'active', that would have been weird in the extreme.
As for dentists, mine doesn't have an aquarium but they do have bird feeders just outside the window. The messing around in my mouth isn't bad, but they overdosed me on Novocaine once and the guy almost dropped a filling down my throat while he was recovering from a sprained wrist and still doing his job. >.> Yeah. That wasn't one of the better visits. My thing is why are they always trying to talk to you with their hands jammed in your mouth? It's not like you can reply. -_- That annoys me so much. Just like waiters/waitresses.

O_O Omg that dentist visit sounds like hell! <_< An overdose on Novocaine and then almost chokes you >_> I'm surprised it hasn't put you off dentists for life haha xD. I'd be so paranoid after that..
But yeah.. the talking to you while their hands are in your mouth. What is that? And then they go "Sorry, I didn't catch that?" and resume to ask you thousands of questions. u.u
Following the path for truth...
and ending the dream.
Yeah, the worst part is that I had to go to work that night too. I had a fever and dizziness and still couldn't feel most of my face. I swear they gave me like three shots of Novocaine that time...probably because the dentist's hands weren't all that steady. Hence him dropping the filling. It sucked.
Something else that bothers me is after you get the filling in and everything they tell you to bite down and tell them how it feels. Um, you've numbed that whole side of my face, the answer would be nothing...duh! I usually lie and say it feels fine heh. If it ends up not being right I can always go back and have them file it down or whatever the hell they do...though having fangs wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing...heh heh heh. But it hasn't happened yet, so no fangs for me.

Neither of the two really bother me.
The worst for doctors would have to of been shots. But since I was in 6th grade and in the hospital for double pneumonia, the nurses kept on missing my vein because I was so dehydrated. So many times that they missed it, that it just stopped bothering me.
But if I had to choose between the two, it'd have to be dentists just because of the sensations. I can't stand the sound of the scraper against my teeth, or gagging because of accidently putting a tool too far down my throat, making my gag reflex kick in. But I have to say, the worst part was sensation of and hearing the crunch of my teeth being pulled when I needed braces.
Well it's a really hard choice to choose which is the lesser evil >.>..
Doctors: I have a past with doctors and they're no fun XD... And those needles those horrible needles I still get nightmares about those things O.O... And they always tell you that it won't hurt a bit but did you ever notice that it always hurts a lot <.<... It's just evil to tell and ten year old that something wouldn't hurt a bit and once they start you/re crying and screa, ing for your mom because it hurt so much.... Doctors are one of the greatest evil of the world =[
Dentist: Dentist where do you start thos weird tools they have for your mouth and the bright light they shine in your eyes when they're checking you out... It's blinding O.O... And when they're making your mouth numb with that stuff that supposedly taste like bubblegum but it doesn't your lips feel so funky and it just isn't right :[... I fear dentist actually and I'm so glad that I never had a cavity because I couldn't take those toold being used to fill it in O.O
So Basically it's a hard choice but I'm going to go with *Drum Roll*...... dentist... It's just something about them sure doctors don't always tell you the truth about their procedures but dentist are so creepy >.>...
Let's see... My doctor used to be a grouchy old bastard. Then he retired and this young nurse replaced him. She's so friendly that I actually look forward to going to the doctors now.
As for dentists, not so much. I have a problem that I call "fang teeth". Besically my fangs stick out slightly further than my other teeth, making me look like some sort of faggish vampire. They offered braces, but I'm going with surgery, since it'll be free. Next year, that should be. No more ugly fangs.
What about the opticians? I hate the opticians and not because it makes me nervous but because it's so boring. When I was a kid, I spent years in and out of hospital every few days because of my terrible eyesight. Now that it's more stable, I have to face boring optician appointments twice a year. It may not be many, but I still find it really boring.
In conclusion, I'm really not scared or nervous to visit any of them. The worst one though, is the dentist. I hate those chairs.

Heh, I have always hated anything to do with medical stuff, so I suppose I hate doctors more.
Doctors: I think I am a bit of a hypochondriac, so normally I would hate going to the doctor. There have been numerous times where there has been something wrong with me, and out of my fear of finding out something way worse, I haven't told my parents. (Guess how that worked out? The problem got waaaay worse >.<) Even when I get a simple nosebleed, I think I need to go to the doctor because I have a brain tumor. -_-; I have a weak stomach, so I always get a huge stomachache when I am waiting in the waiting room. >.<
I guess I get my huge fear of doctors for two reasons.
1) When I was younger, I spent alot of time in the hospital, and I have some pretty bad memories from that.
2) I always think that when I go, they will find something even worse that is wrong with me.
Dentists: I would rather go to a dentist everyday then have to go to the doctor once a year. I still get huge stomachache whenever I go, but I can tolerate it better. What I don't get is why the dentist seems to love feeling around in your mouth! The latex glove just feels so....odd >.< Then they always talk to you with their fist down your mouth and expect you to answer. Ugh~
Heh, there are my reasons...which just thinking about them are making me sick o.o;

I am not really scared by either. I've never really had bad experiences with doctors news-wise, and things like needles don't terrify me. After over two years of going to the dentist and orthodontist about braces, you really get over your fear of either. Now, my only fear is that I'm going to somehow screw up the hard work I've had put into my teeth looking the way they do now. I guess I would choose dentist overall in that if I went and they told me something was wrong NOW - after all the work I have had done to my teeth - I would be a tad frustrated.
I hate the dentist, I've had two unpleasant experiences with them and I try to avoid going to one because of those reasons. I'm terrified of them! As for doctors, I do get nervous at times but they don't really bother me. It's better to know what's wrong with you than leaving it go. If you're talking about operations and what not, I don't take that sort of thing well, I'd get really nervous. I had a procedure done.. last year now I think [not an operation] but I was really scared! It was all good though, turned out alright. It was even better to know I was fine!
I have a fear of the dentist for some reason, I don't know why that is tho.
I don't mind doctors at all I just don't like taking the kids to see them cos the kids scream and cry when they get poked around

But it's hard to determine witch is the lesser evil.
Most doctors tend to piss me off due to me only going when I'm falling to pieces and most of them telling me 'this' is why, but not explaining what 'this' actually is. Also too many of them seem to prescribe pills with a label saying to take them as the doctor says after the doctor hasn't said squat about taking the meds. Probably a scam to make you book another appointment so they can grab an extra fee from you.
Dentists/Orthodontists on the other hand I've had a great experience with. The first I can remember I saw as a kid and nothing was too painful and he gave me cool shit like toothbrushes with Disney character heads and lollypops with artifical sugar, the second wasn't so good with the freebies but he was always good for a chat and one of his assistants was fairly hot and the third (and my current) is a very good looking female who gets VERY close to her patients and compliments me on my awesome teeth. After chatting with her, she said it might be due to my love of cheese as apparently cheese strengthens them like nothing else. But yeah, she makes going to the dentist awesome. Has a great pair of boobs and like most dentists she has to be looking over me to see my teeth so I tend to get a wonderful view. That likely makes me a pervert, but it's better than looking at the flaking skin on the face of an old man dentist!

I take dental visits in stride. Though they tend to piss me off by telling me my gums and teeth are not in great shape, and if a filling falls out it's because I drink too much soda which makes my teeth soft instead of them accepting they did a shitty job for $400 a tooth.
Ive been keeping up the maintence more these days. My last visit was 2005 and the lady who does the teeth cleaning said I needed to do the dumass flossing then she had the audacity to put on one of those videos on how to clean teeth while she left the room to attend to somebody else. I don't know what I found more insulting. The fact I was 25 and they were gonna make me watch a video for kids to teens (no offense to the minors here) or the fact that they had finished with all the stuff I was paying for that day and I was supposed to hang out on my own time and watch this crap???
I scooted out the door, paid the bill and went home.
