So, who's going to college right now? I'm totally going to K-State majoring in Theater with an emphasis in Playwriting specifically. This is my sophomore year so I haven't really delved into the actual playwriting part, just doing a bunch of requirement courses. This year has started off pretty well though and I'm looking forward to the rest of it.
Oh and if college works differently in your country or state or I guess I could have just said location maybe you could talk a little about that! Or if you're not in college yet, but you're planning on going, where to?

I'm going to the university of south dakota majoring in business administration, minoring in spanish, and having an emphasis in healthcare. I love being away from home learning about new things and meeting new people, along with just having a wonderful time I've got my own apartment this year with my best friend so it's gonna be a great year ha haaaaaaaa.

Oh Gen Ed courses, how lame you are! I really wish I could just study the one thing I wanted to do, like an apprentice of olden days. Man that would be sweet.

Unfortunately, I'm going to Delaware Tech, majoring in Environmental Technology. I say unfortunately because my classes started Monday, two weeks before Labor Day, which is absolutely ridiculous, and I won't have any money for books or supplies until the end of the month, so the middle of next week, which puts me behind in every single one of my classes. And of course, I'm not a minority, so I can't get financial aid.
So just like the last two years, I have to get creative to get money. I'm thinking I'll steal the Hope Diamond from the Smithsonian this year. That should cover me for the rest of my life.

I heard that diamond is yawn inducing. I didn't even bother seeing it when I was in DC. Maybe my loss though? Hmmm.
This past April I finished my Bachelor of Arts Honours degree, majoring in history at the University of Manitoba. At the moment I'm taking a year off to work before going back for my Master's. Not much you can do with a history degree unless you go all the way, so I'd best do that. Not 100% sure if I'm going back to the U of M for that or if I'll go somewhere with a better graduate program, maybe York. At any rate, I rather enjoy university, despite the massive amounts of stress it creates. There's just something about being on a campus that feels...mystical? Well, feels something anyways.
I'm gonna be entering my senior year at the University of Tampa in none other than Tampa, FL. I'm a Biology, Pre-Med major and I just finished taking my MCAT two Friday's ago and am in the process of finishing fillings out my application on the AMCAS site to submit to medical schools. It's getting hectic and has been all summer with all the studying that I've had to do in order to be ready to take the MCAT so I really didn't have a summer this year but you gotta sacrifice somethings ya know? Anyways that's what I'm doing and hope to get accepted to a medical school sometime this fall/spring before I graduate in May.
I remember a very similar topic being posted a few months ago, but I suppose for some, the situation will have changed.
In the United Kingdom, 'college' and 'university' are not the interchangable terms that they are in the states. In England, college is where you sit exams for entry into university (where you sit a degree), and in Scotland, college is an optional step towards university (used mainly by people who didn't get the right qualifications in high school, but also by those who don't need a degree but instead need another qualification).
Also there is no such thing as 'majors' and 'minors'. You go to University with only one subject of study (for the most part) and you apply directly for that course about a year before entry.
No need to do pre-med in Britain either. Medicine is a four year degree with steep entry requirements.
Entry into University is also more formal in the UK, as there is only officially one way to do it. A website called UCAS deals with all entry into University, and you can only apply for 5 courses in a single year (although you can apply only once for Oxford/Cambridge and possibly medicine). It also costs Ł15.
University and college tuition is free in Scotland as long as you're Scottish... or European and not British. Sorry England, Wales and Northern Ireland!
tl;dr - College is not college in Britain.
Next month I'll be entering my second year of my BSc (Hons) in Computer Games Design at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude you'll only be an hour-ish away from me if you went to York! Not that we go to The City very often, but if you were there I'd totally take a special trip down to see ya. Provided you don't mind me dragging Claire and P along for the ride.
I didn't go to College or University. /gasp
I got into Factory work which pays seriously well and went with it. Did it for 10 years, then met my guy, had Claire and now I'm a stay at home Mom. Once she's in school fulltime I might look into going back. Depends on what the market needs at the time is what I'll probably do.
WHEW! Someone with less posts than me!!! GO BANGLADESH! You should post up some of your art yo! I'd be happy to see it!
Yeah i would be happy i havent done anything note worthy as of yet still in my first quarter just done some still lifes and things of that nature, basic drawing but ill be sure to posts them just take it easy on the critizim
Oh Gen Ed courses, how lame you are! I really wish I could just study the one thing I wanted to do, like an apprentice of olden days. Man that would be sweet.
You can in some fields. Carpentry, stone masonry, hell even cooking. I dropped out of culinary school to apprentice under a chef. Granted, that fell through, but it was always an option.
Anyways, I'm in my final semester at St. Louis Community College, Forest Park for my Associates in Applied Science for Computer Networking. Hopefully by December I'll have a few more pieces of paper to throw with it; a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certificate and an A+ certificate (Basic Windows/Computer hardware knowledge cert)
I need to get the ball rolling on my Bachelor's, but if I continue on it'll be at Webster University here in St. Louis. They have the best transfer program for my major towards a BS in Computer Science coming out of StLCC, and "affordable" tuition. The government's going to pay for half of it, anyways.
Before my major in Comp. Networking, I was a Culinary Arts major for a year. I worked in professional kitchens for nearly 5 years, but have since closed that chapter in my life. Paying out the ass for schooling for it to teach me nothing I didn't already learn was a waste of time and money. Plus I know way too many people with degrees in Culinary that make shit money, the worst being a friend who's 60 grand in debt from Johnson and Wale's University, the 2nd top rated Culinary school in the nation, and he makes a whopping $32,000/year.
I'm only taking 1 semester of 2 Gen Ed classes, then next semester I take 1 Gen Ed class. Then after that I believe it's all my course of study after that. I have a piece of paper that explains this I think somewhere.

On monday I will be flying out to Germany to study two semesters at the University of Nuremberg-Erlangen as part of the ERAMUS programme in Europehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erasmus_Programme). This will essentially be the third year of my "Bachelor of Commerce with German" degree at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Its by no means the worst course in the world but I wouldnt have done it had I known there would be so much goddamned math related and economic subjects.
I dont have to contribute towards paying tuition fees as well as the fact that indigenous Irish students are eligible for a 3000 euros plus maintenance grant every year, and as well as that I will be getting a 1300 euros plus mobility grant for going on the ERASMUS programme. Its not like Irish students dont earn it though. For example for my leaving cert( the British equivalent are the A levels, I dont know the American equivalent) I myself did 8 subjects, and when you consider that each subject is harder then its British A level counterpart it adds up to a lot of effort. So third level is quite manageable in comparison.
"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."
Winston S.Churchill
UMKC (University of Missouri - Kansas City) student. I'm majoring in History and working on my ROTC wonderfulness. After 7 years of the military they decided I should use my brain to become an officer. So... with them picking up the tab, I might as well stick it out it seems.
Also, the living with your best friends gets super crazy. Lots of fun, and to be honest, we didn't have too many problems in the on and off living with them. Usually pretty quickly squashed too.
Will be interesting to see what kind of major program I can get into while rockin' out my commanding people.
School system in general is somewhat different here where I live, highschool is basically a college here as you chose a profession/direction right before you enter highschool and stick with it during your time in highschool. I myself graduated as building technician, after that you have a choice to go to university where you can continue your profession or take something else.
At most university's you have to take a pre-exam to qualify, on others like mine they calculate all of your grades during your time in highschool and chose only the top 100 students every year. I'm second year of Civil Engineering, I'm afraid I'll have to retake the second year as I haven't passed enough subjects, luckily, I can take some of the subjects form the third, the final year. I also have to transfer to another college, it ain't prestige as the one I'm currently one but it's cheaper, which is exactly what I need right now, I'll still study Civil Enginering.
Currently 3/4 of the way through my second year for a BSc in Geography, though I've changed majors several times, and my degree twice. That only marginally affected the papers I was taking, however.
I've been invited to participate in an Honours programme come 2012, and I intend to go further. More and more people have degrees, and my degree isn't exactly the most marketable, so I better, in the words of the Great Jin, "go all the way".
My papers are generally concerned with human geography (population, urban sociology and form, and 'development' (of nations and people)), economics, and statistics. I've also taken politics papers, and a religious studies paper. That's the cool thing about university: there is so much to dip your toes into, and I find the whole thing challenging (challenging = fun, for me).
Ah, then that would make Alpha the Machine in my Garden. I'm an Ecologist and Horticulturist. I'm only two years away from my Doctorates. Which means, of course, teaching, becoming published, a thesis papers and a shit ton of studying.
I can't say my choices of Universities were geared towards prestige, but more towards thrift. I've had three of them, by now. Alma Maters, greek life and Uni pride are cute sentiments that I get to see the undergrads wear on their sleeves.
I am so close these days, to the academic finishing line that I can't help feel a little sad. I really feel more qualified as a professional student than any occupation that my degree will secure.
yay to be back for labor day break! I'm already exhausted lol. Having a blast, but exhausted. Technically I have class tomorrow, but its "History of Dinosaurs", and we all know what happened to them.
