    Arhgghhhh viruses!

I am scanning my computer atm because i think i have a virus and it brings back memories of when my old PC was screwed and covered in them. So i was wondering:

1)What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?
2)What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?
3)And Finally how bad were the effects of these viruses?

1)It has to be between the Trojan horse dropper .zlob which brought in virus after virus even when you clean them up and whats worse is when you remove it, it uses system restore/the registry to resurrect itself. Which REALLY sucks i can tell you. Or the worm we got which went through our whole networks screwing with everything.
2)Including Tracking Cookies about 250, 150 odd of them were tracking cookies but thats still a hell of a lot of malicious software. And on an off note my uncle had over a 1000 MALICIOUS software which amazed me.
3)Well the worm dropped quite a few nasty Trojans onto my PC which advertised child pornography and bestiality which isn't the best thing to have pop up with your parents there. And the zlob brought in every type of virus thought to man which wasn't nice! Daddy managed to remove the worm with out wiping my PC but the zlob we had to re-install windows over the top of it.

I look forward to your responses and stories.

Nothing, actually, which would answer all three of your questions. The worst I've ever had is a couple of pieces of Adware, back before I understood more about computers, and I cleaned those up really nicely by just going into the add/remove programs and killing the programs I didn't install. Through a combination of luck and security paranoia (and changing over my laptop to Linux), I've managed to avoid any actual viruses..

For those of you who may be less safe, let me make a few recommendations:

First and foremost, don't use Internet Explorer unless you absolutely have to (there are a few poorly written programs and websites that still require IE, but they're going the way of 624 KB RAM computers. It's made some improvements, but it still has some gaping security vulnerabilities, especially compared to other browsers. I use and recommend firefox, but more accurately, I recommend =not= IE.

Secondly, be careful about your websites. Sites that let you inject your own scripts (yes, MySpace, I'm talking about you) are really cool and awesome. You can force everyone who comes to your page to listen to that one song you really love. But someone much more sinister can force it to run pieces of code that can put adverse things on your computer. Using MySpace itself, for instance, can be fine, but be careful about whose pages you go to. Even if you know the person, they could have gone somewhere and gotten infected. Constant vigilance, as Professor Moody would say in Goblet of Fire .

Thirdly, if you do use Firefox, get a couple of lovely little addons called NoScript and AdBlock Plus. AdBlock is relatively self explanatory and less important, but it's really useful for browsing the Internet quickly. NoScript, on the other hand, will, by default, turn off things like JavaScript on any page that you visit. Which means right after you install it, most web pages look really weird, but whenever you visit a page that has scripts running, it'll show you a list of the sources of all scripts on that page, and you can choose which ones you want to allow. So, for instance, you can allow scripts from thefinalfantasy.net, but block that one from ilogyourkeys.com if it had somehow managed to worm its way into an advertisement.

Fourthly, if you do get infected, there's a lot of pretty decent software at helping remove as much of it as you can. I've always used Spybot: Search and Destroy, although i'm sure there's better stuff now. If you notice something, go after the problem right away: sitting around will only make it worse.

Or just switch to Linux ^_^.

1)What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?
    No idea what it was called, but this thing brought like... a screen of asian writting which was on top of everything we need - made viewing things quite hard. We got it because my damn stupid brother was downloading PSP games from some site that actually looks a lot like TFF... >>;

I had a something on my laptop a few weeks ago, and I sent it to two of my friends by accident. That took a long time figuring out the best way to get rid of it. My Norton noticed it was there, but for some reason wasn't killing the ****er. Can't remember what we did, but my friend was over and showed me how they fixed it on theirs. That took pretty much a whole day - 3 hours when they came over after I failed to fix it myself. That stopped me from sending my courswork - I'm now missing a grade. XD

2)What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?
In the process of dealing with the above one... we kinda hit loads more. I'm talking between 100-200 different types of everything that could go wrong. And because my mum is really messy with her files on her PC, it took 9 hours to scan and remove everything.

Week later we were in PC World because the computer failed to start up. Funny, it was on my mums birthday, so they fixed it for free. But what they did took 4 hours to do. XD

3)And Finally how bad were the effects of these viruses?
Nothing too bad. I mean, we deleted those games (yeah, who'd want them now?) and... that was it. Everything was back to how it was.

Oh, and my laptop being a bugger stopped me from getting a grade. So... MEH.

I think the only reason i get viruses is through menas of downlaoding games form the interwebz but entity the reason norton wouldn't kill it is because Norton actaully sucks. AVG FTW and everything Shan'do Spike was all the advice i would give, oh and avoid warerz at all times!

1)What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?

No idea what it was called, but it made three random websites appear every thirty seconds or so. These websites often didn't close like normal (the X in the corner) as well, or didn't respond, so by the end of an hour session on the computer, there'd be about 500 websites open. It was really annoying.

2)What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?

Well into the hundreds. About 400-500.

3)And Finally how bad were the effects of these viruses?

Like I said previously, they made popups occur every half a minute. It slowed down the computer, made playing games impossible and was generally evil.

What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?

No idea what it was called, but it disabled my administrative controls and half of my desktop. It would rewrite my system restore and I couldn't access most of my controls. (Like I said before.) Then a screen would pop up saying, "You compter has virus!!! Fix now!" with that exact spelling and grammar. I was like, "No shit! You think I don't know?!" I reformatted my laptop and quit downloading from torrents. (Never do that! It's illegal and you get a TON of viruses and spyware.)

What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?

I have had at least 150 tracking cookies at one time, also with two Trojans. They were put into my AVG Virus Vault, and I removed them all. Nothing too bad. I'm alot more careful since that last incident.

And Finally how bad were the effects of these viruses?

They didn't do anything too bad...other than cause me a bunch of worry and a ton of showers. (I take a bunch of showers when I'm nervous. Weird, huh? ) I'm just glad nothing bad happened!

1)What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?
I don't even know what it was. Probably a trojan from all the porn I like to watch.

2)What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?
Haha... 'contracted.' I think it was just one.

3)And Finally how bad were the effects of these viruses?
Well, whatever it was, it made it impossible to access the desktop or the task bar so I tried a few tricks, but... I ended up just having to do a complete wipe. Luckily, most of the stuff I erased (that I cared about) was backed up on my external hard drive. I lost some photos and probably some music, but... nothing too painful.
    Curious?

What is the Worst Virus You Have Got?
Not a clue about the name. I actually think it might have been a rootkit or something. Whatever it was it was crafty little shit.

What is the Most Amount of Viruses you have 'contracted' at a single time?
    I'm guessing three. Separate incident.

How bad were the effects of these viruses?
The thing was a monster. I was always so paranoid about security so how I got infected I'll never know. How it managed to completely foil my ridiculously tricked out security suite's every effort at removal is even more baffling. It took a hard drive wipe to get rid of it. The PC equivalent of "I say we take off, and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

Though perhaps the most far reaching effect was that the incident prompted me to switch to Linux. I've never looked back and never been a happier computer user. Thanks, virus!

    EDIT: w00t!!! Hundredth post!!!
