    Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    I hear people talk about this 'thirst' all the time. Like in films, book and general life. I suppose to a certain extent I do have one. I like to know how things work and I always read the backstory of games and such.

    A good example would be when I was watching Heroes and I read the online web comics to fill in gaps. I just like to know what's going on. In everyday life I also read up alot on English language. I don't study it anymore but I really feel a need to know, particulaly if a gap in my knowledge comes to my attention. I also like to know new words, even if I never use them. Just so I know the meaning I guess.

    Anybody else have the 'thirst'?

    I suppose it doesn't have to be academic, just a need to know. Like in Dragon Age- I read all the damned codex's even though they were mind-numbingly boring.

    Haha, same here. ^^;
    Also, I read a lot of the books I found in Oblivion. I just found them interesting. ^^;

    When it comes to video games, I do a lot of research into a story or back story when I've finished a game. I just find it interesting.

    My favourite topics to read up on is Mythology, the paranormal and the Ancient Egyptians. Throughout my schooling, I was really passionate about those topics and Religious Education (which everyone found boring for some reason ). Because no one else seemed to share the same love for it as me, I was left to read up about it alone most of the time. I've got a book called Visionaries and Mystics, which I always end up reading parts of multiple times because I just enjoy hearing about it.

    I think, despite him not really being around much, I've picked that up from my dad. He has the same interests. ^^;

    I did that, too. Some of them were genuinely awesome, though. Not like some of the pointless monster ones in DA. I like the ones that tell you about the Deadra. They were cool. Mind you I thought the Daedra were far more interesting than any god in Oblivion.

    I like the Greek Mythology. The Roman ones are cool too. I like hearing about teh battles of the gods and such. Icarus' story is a favourite of mine actually. Why is it that the, generally, have way better mythology than us? No fair.

    I suppose we do have the... *cough*... World tree... XD

    I am really interested in ancient mythology, though. I hae a book on all the old greek legends and myths. It's cool. Their gods are amazing.v

    Re: Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    I have a thirst for "useless" knowledge... The kind that would only really be applicable in a game of trivial pursuit or something. I own a few books called "The Bathroom Reader", and they're full of info about urban legends, dumb criminals, the history of everyday items, and other stuff. There's all kind of cool and interesting info in those books.

    Ever since I was introduced to the TV Tropes site, I'll sometimes head over there when I don't have anything planned for the day, and just read up on various info on movies, tv shows and games. ^^; It's easy to spend HOURS there just reading and clicking through more topics without even realizing how long you've been there. Cracked is another site that I've spent hours just reading up on various topics, all for the interest of acquiring more useless knowledge to fill my brain.

    I'm the same way as Dodie. I love useless and practical knowledge, but moreso things that I can apply in my life. Occasionally, when I'm bored, I'll do research on characters from books, games or tv, but that's few and far between, and usually only to clarify things on episodes I might have missed.

    I must get my hands on that book. Dumb criminal are my thing. Are there more like it? Where did you get it from? I'd go into the programmes I watch but that isn't the point of this discussion. I also like reading and watching stuff about 'good' criminals, if you'll accept the contradiction. People like serial killers and stuff. Morbid but interesting.

    Speaking of websites with useless knowledge; I find myself on Wiki ALOT. Not even looking up anything good. Sometimes it's just to see who was the voice in what anime or game. Or, like Pete said, I look up characters and look at a bio or whatever...

    Oh and Dodie... Looking up stuff for TP is a good thing. I play drinking games based around those questions and It's hard. Mind you it is one from 1996.

    I just pick up my copies from a local bookstore (in the humor section), but I'm sure you can order them online. And yeah, there's a TON of these books. It's a series that has been going on since 1988, and they usually publish an edition once a year. ^^ Here's a link to the official site you can check out if you want.

    Re: Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    I thirst for vengeance, and for power, and vengeance, and power... It's a never-ending cycle, really.

    Like Dodie, I visit tvtropes a lot, and like you, I visit Wikipedia sometimes (used to be a lot more before I found out about tvtropes, though.) I thirst for knowing what other people think of things. Mostly things that I like or hate, though; not so much things that I'm indifferent to. I'll also go to the imdb message board for a movie I've just watched to see if anyone's talked about it, although it's hard to sift through the trolls over there who like to say that every movie is the worst movie ever made.

    I also like to read about actors/bands/entertainers/cool people that I like. Find out what their lives have been like, read about people's interactions with them, etc. It's especially interesting when they have a message board, blog or some other thing they've written in, themselves. See how they respond to their fans. With bands at least, you can get an idea of where they're coming from with their songs sometimes (or if their songs seem genuine anymore, now that you know they're a two-faced douche bag.)

    Stuff. Anyhoo...

    Kindof a passive thirst here, I really don't care to it just seems to happen. I watch alot of documenteries, find myself reading about verious subjects. I really don't feel a need to know I just consider myself curious about things.

    It's easy to be curious in the age of google, wiki, and youtube.

    Re: Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    I thirst for knowledge, sure. I read my textbooks and take notes a lot of the time, but that's really just a means to an end. If I read the textbooks and take good notes, then I'll pass the chapter test for that class, which brings me one step closer to my ultimate goal; money.

    I appreciate learning about things that relate to me making money. I don't give a shit about Icarus or his dumbass flight, or whatever other retarded crap those uneducated ancient morons wrote about. I don't care about the back stories of characters in movies, games, or shows, because if I actually have to go and look those things up, then the storytelling capacities of those programs are probably not too great to begin with.

    And while useless trivia is fun to spout; such as that the circumference of an average sized brick is 79 cm squared, it serves no purpose. I learned the circumference of an average sized brick just to be funny. Learning it has absolutely no probability of making me money, hence it becomes wasted thought capacity that I could have instead filled with useful knowledge pertaining to my area of specialty.

    Well, a lot is two words.

    I don't know about this thirst thing. As much as Clint is being sardonic, I think it's true that most of what we know that we also consider important is a means to an end. The end is usually money.

    Sure, I'm at university to better myself, to discover who I am, to stand up for causes, and so on. But at the end of the day I want a job that pertains to what I know, and the more I know about my specialities, the more successful I will be at it.

    It's not really a thirst, but a feeding tube. I have to learn the things I am taught. In some ways that takes the spice out of learning.

    Don't get me wrong, I do learn for learning's sake, but it's most likely to be in regards to current events; I like to keep tabs on what's going on around me. I have a ridiculous number of news apps on my iPod, for instance.

    I'm studying maths and English, so I guess I DO have a thirst for that particular knowledge. ^^"
    At least I am always interested in my new courses at university and can't wait for them to start. (Except for Probability... I hate that god damn Probability >_<)

    As for non-academic interests... I don't think there are any. ^^" At least I can't think of any. My only real interests are Maths and English. First I studied them in my spare time, but then... I just studied them at university. O.o
    I feel like having no interests at all... ^^"

    Re: Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    A thirst is an overstatement. It's nice to know what is going on if, say, you are stranded in a classroom for three hours and the man in the corner of the room is talking actively about trigonometric functions. Oh? Sine is ratio y/r. Okay, so what does that mean? Let's figure this shit out straight away. I'm all ears. Wait, I gotta go. See you next week!

    It usually starts and ends like that. That is to say that I am unable to propel myself forward to search for "knowledge". I won't ignore it if it's in front of me, however. I don't hate it. I may give it my all for that one moment.

    Phil class basically left me hollow. Seeking truth for the sake of it just doesn't seem to fly with me like it used to. But if it's right there then why not take it. Especially if it's trashy truth! Gossip is great.

    If only any of this knowledge had a clear use. Seeking wouldn't be so troublesome then.

    Re: Anybody have a thirst for knowledge?

    In my high school history classes I would read my entire textbooks as soon as I got em'. I would take excellent notes over the whole entire thing. This would make the whole year go by alot easier cause I knew all the things I needed to know. Plus it was just all around fun.

    I would read alot of the books that I found in Oblivion. I just found it awesome that some of these books would go into so much detail. In fact I do this with a few games. Dragon Age codex read it all. I got on Morrowind when I was bored one day. I read through my entire journal, and this was towards the end, so there was alot.

    I still read up on quite a bit of mythology. My favorite by far has to be Norse. Everything about it draws me in. Plus Thor come on everyone f*cking loves Thor.

    Sitting here waiting for Rocky, and Che to notice me!!
