    Samurai Pizza Cats

Earlier in the year, I ordered Season 1 on DVD through Amazon.com. I watched the first four episodes and then stopped, until this past week. I must've been really bored (you can't just watch Daria all day, can you? ...maybe you can...)

I remembered this show being absurd and silly when I first saw it. Watching it again, the feeling hasn't changed. It has the propensity to be extremely clever at times, and really stupid at other times. Or at least the english dub does; I have no idea what the original was like. Apparently they sent this show across the Pacific with no script-just the animation-so the dubbing team had to come up with their own script. It has to deal with the pitfalls of being dubbed in the 90's and aimed at an American children's audience, and a lot of the original jokes probably wouldn't work too well over here, so that doesn't help.

Overall, I do appreciate it for what it is. It has its moments, and it's a good dosage of nostalgia for me. Although sometimes I think I am probably not a very harsh critic when it comes to my childhood cartoons. I would say it ranks below Ducktales, Gummi Bears, or Talespin, but ahead of the abominations that were: Any Super Mario Bros. cartoon; Captain N: The Game Master; or the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Hell, it probably ranks above the Saturday Morning Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show.

    What do you think? Anyhoo...

I remember partially catching Samurai Pizza Cats on the way into school while I was in middle school. I never got to watch the full thing, but I remember liking it either way. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to find the Japanese version and the original story line. If it really is true that the American dubs were all made up, I am definitely going to have to check out both the dub and sub of it.

PS. I loved those shows you called "abominations." I would personally call them corny or campy. I love it. Certain bad shows can just be so funny sometimes. I can still watch some of it now and laugh. "Well, excuuuuse me, Princess."

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. This past Summer, my friends and I sat around and watched Captain N for several episodes one night, and we were all laughing at how innacurate and cheesy it was. And I can watch some of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, but there are many episodes of that that I see now where it's just too much; they reused the same voice sound clip too many times, they animated the scene too cheaply, the joke they used was far too corny, or what have you. Heh. Maybe I just need to watch them in the right context, though; before I watched the Super Mario Bros. cartoon again, I'd been watching Ducktales, which to me stands the test of time. So I put unfair expectations on DIC to measure up to the quality of classic Disney, I suppose.

On topic: Some day, I will kidnap everyone in the Evil Bad Guys, tie them up in a basement, and force them all to watch my Season 1 of Samurai Pizza Cats all the way through. We will get so tired of it by then; I think it's more of a show to watch in small doses, like an episode or two at a time. Anyhoo...
