The Mermaid

Just when they were to cross the half broken bridge, Arctus noticed something in the water.
”Look!”, he said and pointed down on the mist filled water. He got the other’s attention and their eyes focused on the water. All of them stood as statues, starring at the calm lake.
”We’re wasting time”, Venus said and crossed the bridge.
”Wait, I swear I saw something move!”
Frigor seemed to agree with her, but instead of rushing over the bridge he gave Arctis a smile and then gave him a soft push on his back.
”We should go”, Frigor said to him.
It didn’t take long until the group stopped again, this time they saw a figure below the surface. It looked as if it was on it’s way up.
”Told you!”, Arctus said with a wide smile on his face.
Venus hurried back on the bridge and leaned over the rope.
”Is it … ?”, Umbra said until she got interrupted by an enormous splash, which made them all soaked.
”What the … !”, Venus screamed, with her white dress all wet.
When they were finished of rubbing out all of the water in their eyes, Arctus screamed;
”It’s a mermaid!”
He was correct, not far away from them, a woman’s face peeked up from the water. She looked at them all with a fascinated look on her face. There was a moment of silence.
The mermaid’s red hair reached down to her white shoulders, and on her right side a strap of seagrass hanged.
”… Hello”, she said with the most softest voice they’ve ever heard, but the group stayed still as if they’ve just seen a ghost.
”Oh, isn’t that your language?”, she said confused. ”I must’ve read wrong …”
”Hello”, Frigor answered.
The mermaid smiled
”My name is Merma … Merma Ferventes”, she introduced herself.
”My name is Frigor, this is Arctus, Umbra and Venus”, he introduced them all.
”Do you have a … Tail?”, Arctus asked.
She laughed, and looked at him as if she said ’yes’. Then she layed on her back and lifted her green fishtail, so everyone could see. It shimmered in the colors of blue, green and red, it was a beautiful sight. After some seconds, she smoothly took it down, which created a smaller splash.
”You are the first humans I’ve ever talked too, and you seem very nice”
The shock began to leave, and they could once again talk.
”So mermaids do exist”, Arctus said, more to himself than to Merma.
She nodded, and began to slowly swim around in circles.
”Where do you live?”, Venus asked Merma.
”In the seakingdom of Alphaia”, she anwered. ”Pretty much all of the world’s mermaid’s live there, those who doesn’t, are either lost or kidnapped … ”
Frigor raised his eyebrow.
”Kidnapped, are there anything we can do to help?”
Merma shaked her head, as if she just went over the line.
”No, this is something I have to deal with myself”, Merma said with her head sunken.
”I understand”
”I’d like to know everything about you, your kind, your history … But I guess this is a bad time”, Merma said. ”Here, take this whistle, blow in it anytime and I’ll try to show up. Just be sure you’re near water!”, those were the Mermaid’s last words, she then dove into the water and slowly disappeared into the dark.
All of them looked at the whistle they’ve recently received. It was a golden shell, carved so it coud be used as a whistle.
”Neat”, Arctus said with his eyes wide opened. Suddenly, Umbra gave away a sound of pain. She falled to the ground, and started to shiver.
”What’s happening!?”, Venus screamed shocked.
”She’s having a vision”, Frigor said while holding Umbra’s arms so she wouldn’t fall into the lake.
”A vision …?”
Everyone kneed down and tried to catch words.
”Merma … Hurt …”, she shivered. ” … The Phoenix Shore …”
”Is Merma hurt?”, Arctus asked in panic. ”Wait … The Phoenix shore is where I live!”
Umbra stopped shivering and took a deep breath, she got up, with a little help from Frigor.
”Are you okay, Umbra?”, Frigor asked.
”What are you babbling about, child?”, she asked him with a wide smile.
”Well … Oh, it was nothing”, he answered. ”We just decided we’re heading for the Phoenix shore, right?”
Everyone agreed.
”To the shore then!”, Arctus yelled with his dagger raised.
”Aye, aye!”
