Last book you read worth mentioning

Th weather's been crap lately and so there's little else for me to do but pick up reading again and as i'd exhausted my libraries supply of decective thrillers i went for this one called Death Force.
When i picked it up i thought i would be about some hardened ex SAS who single-handedly takes on and defeats the entire of Afganistan but i was pleasantly suprised(ish) by what it actually about.

Ok, this hardened ex SAS () called Steve needs money to buy his uncles vintage car dealership so he goes to this guy (i forgot his name) who runs Death Force and he is set with the task of recruting nine other mercenaries who are masters of their trade and arnt afraid to die etc. Thy're set to Afganistan to rob a drug lord's fortress and will each receive $3million from the total amount they steal. However things dont go to plan as one guy is shot, another captured by the Taliban and they have to run for the Pakistani border.
Overall a pretty good book and the author seemed to know a good deal about military histrory or at least did his research. And each of the nine mercenaries were from a different military, IRA,Spesnaz, Gurkah so some of them were enemies at one point.

This should probably - and most likely will be - moved to the Literature section of the forums since it deals with... literature.

Anyhuma, the last book I read worth mentioning. I would suggest the Way of the Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It is the first book of projected ten in his Stormlight Archvie epic. It is a Shardworld book; for those who don't know what that is: the Shardworld novels all take place within the same universe called the Cosmere. Most of Sanderson's original work: Elantris, Warbreaker, Stormlight Archive, & Mistborn are all Shardworld tales. They are not integrally tied together but there are common factors in each book, like a character by the name of Hoid and how some of the magic is similar.

The Way of Kings has one main character, Kaladin, and quite a few supporting characters that take the "screen time". There is a war going on between two groups that has been going on for 5-6 years now. An atheist scholar is researching about the past trying to find the truth. The lore of this world is quite interesting and the magic is good too. I won't go too much into detail since I don't want to spoil anything for potential readers. I will say that once again, Brandon Sanderson has left me wanting the next book in the series to come out. Just as he did with the first two books he wrote in the Wheel of Time.

The other good book I read recently was The Unincorporated Man. It is a book that takes place 300-400 years in the future after the Grand Collapse where humanity fell because of the VR plague (Virtual Reality). Anyways the government is really limited as the Libertarians took over, and their disdain for government shows in the book. A good capture by the authors. The government is not alone in policing or the court system during this time as private business can do so as well. Judges are graded for fairness which caused the public judges to actually be better at their jobs. Humanity has spread to outer limits of the Oort Cloud but the government is headed in Geneva. The most interesting thing about this future society is that when any person is born they are incorporated. At birth they get 100,000 shares. 5,000 shares automatically go to the government which can neither increase or decrease the amount they get and 20,000 shares to the parents. To pay for stuff that they don't have the money for they give up some shares. When they lose 51% majority they effectively lose control of their life. So while this world has a pretty capitalistic economy this gives it a twist of socialism. Though instead of working for society, people work for their shareholders. So it is like a twisted form of capitalism - Share-holder socialistic - capitalism. It is possible to buy back majority so all is not lost. Plus with the advancements in technology/healthcare they have defeated aging and most death if they can get to the body quick enough to revive or if they body hasn't been too badly damaged.

The story is that a man before the Grand Collapse is found frozen. He is not incorporated, hence the title, and it is about his life waking up in this new society and trying to protect his freedom from incorporation which he sees as slavery. A very good book as I could not put it down. I had to finish it even though I knew I had work early in the morning and would only get 4 hours of sleep.

Hmm, this very well may be my first Literature post.

Anyway, I do belive the last book I've read that I really liked was the timeless classic story of survival "Lord of the Flies".

It was a slow building story that leads to much later action and adventure. I'm not going to go into too much detail for I don't want to spoil it, but if you like survival stories I highly recomend this one!

The ending was somewhat anti-climactic for me...
    Spoiler:
and i wonder how Jack didn't get in trouble for trying to kill everyone but meh, still a good story.

The last book I read worth mentioning...hmm. I tend to go on kicks. For a while, I will be total gamer, and the only thing I will read is the text in games. Then, I will read actual books. But anyway...

I really enjoy the classics, mainly Charles Dickens; "Oliver Twist" and "Great Expectations" in particular. I am fascinated with the way he writes. He has a way to submerge me into the story. The first time I read "Oliver Twist" I did not eat for a whole weekend. I was consuming every word. Mom and Dad threatened to take away my library card if I didn't go to sleep. His words were extremely intoxicating.

The last book I read worth mentioning is the book I had to read for school. Its called "To Kill a mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Don't know if you guys have heard of it but I started reading it and its pretty good I have to admit. Its set in a time when there was a lot of racial inequality against African Americans. Its about a white lawyer trying to defend an African American of criminal charges.

Do read it guys if you get the chance

I have never heard of such a book, though it sounds very interesting. I might have to give it a read one day. Thank you for mentioning it.

The last good book I have read worth mentioning would be the literary classic The Dragon and the George. It stars and a George. Or rather, a dragon who is SIMULTANEOUSLY a George. He embarks on an epic quest to rescue his betrothed, Gesundheit. To get to her, he must fight some evil dark guys, like an ogre, a dragon, and a nameless sir knight.

Re: Last book you read worth mentioning

I've read both and they are facinating stories, but for me, To kill a Mockingbird was alittle hard to follow...

Needless to say I enjoyed both of them, especially the mystique surounding "Boo Radly" from To Kill a Mockingbird.

I've also recently read a book called "And Then There Were None" (Also sometimes called "Ten little indians") This one was a great story! It's a mystery/supence kind of book that has a story very similar to the movies series of "House on Haunted Hill" 'cept only this time, there are no ghosts involved in the killing of these people. Hahaha, still, an epic book, I've seen the movies that went with Lord of the Flies and And Then There Were None and I enjoyed both but keep in mind they are very old films. (Black and White, Terrible music, ect)

Re: Last book you read worth mentioning

The last book I had read was by Cassandra Clare, who is the author of the mortal instruments series, it is actually the prequel to the series that I had read. But I'm going to tell you about both(just a little about mortal instruments). Before I tell you what book it is about. I'll tell you what kind of book it is. the prequel book is called 'the infernal devices: The Clockwork Angel' this book and 'the Mortal Instruments' series are fantasy. It has Angels, Demons, Shadowhunters (Angelic warriors), wizards, vampires (not the sparkly kind), werewolves...just about every single mythical creature in it.
the book ' The clockwork Angel' is set in the 1878 England; where American New Yorker girl named Tess Gray goes to visit her brother. Only to find out that he is being held captive. Very early in the book we find out that she's a downworlder (a person who has demon blood in them as well as normal blood, for example werewolves and vamires) and has a special ability to shapeshift into another person. The book is filled with enough action to keep you wondering what will happen next and it's a fast pasing book once you're into it. It will leave you quesitoning on things that haven't been answered yet and will be left wanting more. (wow I didn't do too bad, considering I only read the book once or twice in the past.)
her 'Mortal Instruments' book series are set in present day New York and the main character is a shadowhunter...and they are also filled with the same amount of instense action...but I suggest that you start with 'the clockwork Angel' first, becuase in the book they explain everything so clearly that I had to reread 'the mortal instruments' books again to clear up the confusion I had in those books...since the prequel didn't come out until the third book was finished and was out...Anyways, if you're into this kind of thing...you'll love these books; becuase I know I do.

The last book I've read was Hurdy Gurdy Man; The Autobiography of Donovan.

I'm beyond just a fan of his. It would be closer to an obsession

For those of you who don't know him, he sang 'Sunshine Superman' and 'Mellow Yellow'.

Re: Last book you read worth mentioning

I have just started reading a book called Drylor The First Artifact. It is an Action/Fantasy book created by Ryan Tomasella. So far it is actually damn good, it is a story about a man that suffers amnesia and struggles to regain his memory. As his memory starts to come back to him he realizes that his brother is an evil S.o.b and he makes it his mission to stop him.

It seems like a fairly generic story line but the author makes it his own. There are tons of twists and turns in the story (mainly when the main character thinks he remembers something from his past he realizes that it was only an illusion that his brother wanted him to think was true.) I must say I am really impressed with this book, then again I read almost anything that involved sword and sorcery. Below is what the back of the book reads:

When a man wakes up inside a cage that is being carried through
an underground city, he has no idea where he is or what has
happened to him. As Von, a victim of amnesia, is taken to a jail
cell to await his fate amongst elves, humans, dwarfs, gnomes, and
halflings, he is told he is a member of the Royal Guard of Genisus.
It is not long before he is transported to the palace where he
meets an impatient king who eventually returns him to his jail
    cell while deciding his destiny.

As Von’s memory slowly returns, he discovers that he is the only
one who can protect Drylor—a world that abandoned him—
from its greatest evil, his own brother. Through his journey to the
truth, Von meets an unlikely group of friends who are willing
to sacrifice everything to help him stop his brother Scarlet
from annihilating the only world they have ever known.

As Von’s past becomes clear and reveals his future, he soon
realizes the only way he can end his brother’s heartless
massacres is to find him and kill him.

The latest book I read? Well, I just finished A Wrinkle In Time so I'll sort of review on that.

    A Wrinkle In Time-

I must say, it was very hard to get into at the beginning but it was good, but some people just past on it because it was the first science-fiction novel. Why not just read? Just maybe you would like it, and get drowned in the sequels (Theres three of them, so not really drown but whatever). But anyways, I thought that having three mystical woman with their names starting with the letter W, was interesting and also, on the last chapter(s), there were three beasts that appeared and talked to them and took Meg in, which, I wonder, if their linked together?
But I don't feel like giving a whole page of words on a review on this book like the others, so I'll just give it a rating .
I would give this book an easy 4 out 5, because there were misspellings but you can't get every mistake.

    Love Jill!

The last thing I read that was worth reading was the Obsidian Triology by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. I love fantasy books and these three were great. The titles of the individual books are: The Outstretch Shadow, To Light a Candle, When Darkness Falls. They are set in an alternate world where magic is divided into High Magick and Wild Magick but there is a third magick thought to have been wiped out a 1000 years ago that is on the rise: Endarkend Magick (the magick gained through pain, fear, and death). The bad guys make a move to pity the two magicks of Light against each other. But little does the darker side know, a mage has been born that hasn't existed since that fated war 1000 years before: a Knight Mage. I love how the story gives and takes on both sides of the war but keeps a slightly lightened tone about the how think, making you want to cry for the loss of a character and other times making you laugh at the witty banter of the army.

    Trust Me.

    Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

I saw the 2006 film, liked it, and thought I'd give the book a read, and I was quite impressed. Having only known the film incarnations, I was surprised how different the 'real' Bond is from the representations in the movies. I would definitely recommend it.

Re: Last book you read worth mentioning

I just finished City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I intend on reading City of Ashes next, I just have to wait for my sister to send it to me

At the moment I'm reading His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. It's made up of three books, The Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. I'm nearly finished the third one I have read it before when I was younger and decided to reread it.

A movie was made called The Golden Compass. It's based on The Northern Lights. I was disappointed with it, it doesn't really stay true with the book. I'd rather watch a four hour movie than have them cut things out and change things.

Also I have read Fallen and Torment by Lauren Kate. Currently waiting for Passion to come out. Pretty sure it's out this month.

Anyway I'm not real good with explanations, never was good with the old book report lol but these books are great. I believe they were written for young adults, but some of those books are the best ones.
