News Post Duty Finder Dev Commentary

Square Enix has released a new Developer Commentary video for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This video focuses on one of the new features for the game, the Duty Finder. The purpose of it is a matchmaking system for instanced events/battles. One of the more surprising things about it is the ability to play with people across servers.

The first setup they show is 4 players across different servers and platforms. They all sign up looking to do a battle. The system matches them all up together on specific criteria they set. You have to select what class/job you'll be at the start. The Duty Finder looks for players to fill the necessary roles in a party, so a tank, damage dealer and healer.

The second setup they have show that while you're waiting on a party to be found for you, the player can continue do other things. They can even go to a different location and switch class/jobs. However, when the call comes to join, the player will need to switch back to their registered class/job for the instance they signed up with.

The third setup they explain that a party member can be replaced in the middle of an instance. So if someone needs to drop, the Duty Finder can be requested to find a replacement. So long as players search have the "Join in Progress" option selected they can be called to join mid-instance.

They also explain the level sync system allows high level players to play along with friends that are lower level. So you don't have to worry about being unable to join in something and play with your friends.
