Never played VIII, how does it compare?

Recently I started playing Final Fantasy games, and I'm going back to play the ones I've never played before. Final Fantasy VIII is next on my list, and I just wondered how it compares (length and difficulty wise) to IV, VII, and X. I don't like using guides my first time through RPGs and I do the side-quests I can find, but I'm not going for 100% completion my first time through.

Thank you in advance for your replies

    Final Fantasy VIII
Length wise : A Good 50 hours without bonuses
Difficulty : 5/10 expect for the last boss, then it's 10/10 xD

    Final Fantasy VII
Length : A Good 45 Hours without bonuses [straight play first time round without guide]
    Difficulty : 8/10

    Thanks for your response!

I actually thought VII was pretty easy. I blew through Jenova, Sephiroth's first form, and One-Winged Angel Sephiroth my first go-through. I think Cloud was resting at a solid level 70 when I ended it. And it took me roughly 45 hours also.

Length of this game depends solely on how you play it, the game is quite easy and you can beat it really quick even if your characters are on low levels because opponents level simultaneously with you. Doing sidequest's and collecting cards add some serious length to this game.

As I said before, this game is really easy but only if you understand how to use junction system and you obtain most important magic to junction, abilities of GF-s, also known as summon creatures are most useful especially those that raise your strength and HP. Ultimate weapon's can prove to be also useful because of devastating limit breaks they enable such as Lionhart. You can also use most of opponents weakens to your advantage via junction system enabling you to defeat some strong monsters in one blow like Behemoth for instance. Anyway, I don't think you should have any problems beating this game and I'm sura you'll enjoy playing it.

I think that this is one of the easiest Final Fantasy games, but it is certainly also one of the best. ^It is better than Final Fantasy VII in my opinion...

I think that the story is better than Final Fantasy VII. It is kind of a futuristic game, but it also has some elements that make it set more in an older time period as well. (There are futuristic space crafts, yet you ride trains all the time?) The characters are pretty well developed, and the gameplay is pretty good.

Final Fantasy VIII also has better mini-games than all of the other games you mentioned. The card game is actually fun, and there are many places that you can go to that are not part of the main storyline.

It took me longer to play Final Fantasy VIII than Final Fantasy VII. There is more extra stuff to do in Final Fantasy VIII, but playing the actual storyline may take less time than Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X.

One of the only faults is that it is too easy. All the bosses are push-overs except for Omega Weapon, and the final boss if you aren't prepared. Also you don't really get to buy many weapons, and there is no armor.

Awesome! I've heard many people say they enjoyed VIII more than any other FF game, so I hope I do too.

That sounds great. I'm one of the few that didn't enjoy blitzball in FFX, so knowing the mini-games in VIII are better is good news!

FF8 is my third favourite after 10 then 7 comes 8. Very good game still so I would reccomend it.

Re: Never played VIII, how does it compare?

Ive never played FF VIII myself but i seen my mate play and i just didnt like how it worked and the graphics even put me off even tho i love FF VII, i will play it throught at some point but when im ready. i do recommend you play IX before tho cause IX is brilliant.

Time flows without pause, in a world where I no longer exist, the future is about to change.

It's pretty solid it is, well what I've played anyway, the only thing is I stopped at disc 2 because there's a ton of sidequests so when you get there if you want to complete them all your gonna hafta pay attention. It's a few of my friends favorite game and they keep mentioning on how awesome the junction system is , so its different but then again so is every final fantasy.

Like DrewYeahh said I also recomend IX..especially if you're a fan of the older titles
