I just recently started playing this game again. I put about 30 hours into it already in disc 1, just playing damn cards and grinding some ap early. So I'm coming to the end of disc 1, when the whole plot to

Spoiler: assassinate edea comes along.

Well, starting with the scene introducing her, all of a sudden the cutscene starts to get unbearably laggy, but it will pull through and after making it to the mini sequence where you acknowledge what is happening with Squall and Irvine, it reverts back to

Spoiler: the sorceress who gives her speech and kills what's his name

then it tries to turn back into a cutscene and the camera angle shoots upwards towards the sky showing the crowd and fireworks, and it is here, where the game freezes. Well not the entire game, the music still plays constantly, almost as if to taunt me, lol.

I just purchased it brand new from a friend of mine (well obviously not brand new, but still plastic wrapped) and there is not a scratch on it. It played immaculately up until this point, and it saddens me because I know I'm so close to being on the next disc and moving on. I've tried several times to replay and get past this point, but it just locks up and the music laughs away at me.

Has anyone had a similar experience with a brand new copy of the game?
It's not the system either as it does the same thing between my PSX and PS2. I'm tempted to try it on PS3, but i'd have to replay it all over again, which if I rushed probably wouldn't take too long, but I'm thinking that I should just get a digital copy from the PSN. Not worth it considering I just dropped $40 on it, but I guess if it's what I have to do, it's what I have to do. Back to playing VI and Tactics for now lol

Mine isn't a new copy, but that's the exact point where mine freezes as well.

It also freezes at the opening FMV. I had a save point after that point, though. Got to the beginning of the parade and it freezes. Soooo close to disc 2. ; ;

There is some sort of memory swap you can do with the PS3. My brother did it when our PSP analog stick broke. I couldn't play through the disc 1 event with

SPOILER!!:

President Deling's train when Squall has to input the codes.

So with my old memory, I played through the event on the PS3 (good analog stick), saved, and afterwards put the new memory back on the PSP. So now I'm past that point. But I had the PSN download and the PS1 game discs. Lucky me.

My English copy of Final Fantasy VIII won't go past the opening FMV. :,( Luckilly I understand written French well enough to enjoy it on my French copy I bought on a whim on a day trip to France. However, I suspect the system. Every single copy of Final Fantasy X I bought to replace the one I lost pauses at the same point despite getting one of them resurfaced (this is something to consider; your local Gamestop or Blockbuster might be able to do it for you). I can get a 'new' PS2 fairly cheap from a second hand games shop which might make my games work.

I'm gonna do the same as my friend; buy a PS3 and get the digital downloads. My copy of VII is dodgy, too.

Anyway, see if you can't get the disc resurfaced. It might work.

sou8nds like the laser is dying in your ps1 like mine did.

Get a cd case, and wedge it underneat the 2 lifts underneath the ps1 so the its sitting diagonally. I have tested this time and time again with many different games and found that it actually makes the games work. Dont ask me the science behind it, because I honestly dont know. Also, dont ask me how i figured this out, because I dont remember. It was something to do with my bashing on it and swinging it around but yeah, let me know.
