well i just finished playing ffvii another time through and im bout to start on ffviii again and as 7 was coming to a close i realized something. for all the people that ive seen say that the materia system is so much clearer an cleaner then the junction system..... ridiculous i say. towards the endo of my playthrough i had so damn much materia it was a little ridiculous to find it all and some of it seemed pretty useless to boot, though i still wanted to master it just for braggin rights. dont get me wrong i love ffvii but to say materia is so much better then junctioning is false.....imo haha. now im sure im gonna piss people off but hopefully not too many considering the forum im in atm haha

No I would say the materia system is definitely better because you have to pick and choose which materia you equip and raise and despite it being a lot more of a grind than simply drawing what you want at a certain level in VIII it is several times more rewarding( aka because of the master system where you get another of the same materia with no experience it means you can have several characters equipped with "Knights of the Round" which is just plain awesome). And also you don't have to set aside several turns in battle to draw the requisite magic which is sort of a pain in the arse. I'm not saying the junction system doesn't have its merits I just don't think its as balanced.

idk i think materia is overpowered in 7 even without kotr however i do really like how materia effect eachother in linked slots.but it just seems like i can blast anything away even with just ultima with mp absorb while i eat a bag of chips and make fun of my fiance for watching old reruns of the nanny. haha no seriously shes watching it right now. but anyways i dont have anything that powerful in ff8 other than summons and im def not sitting through those animations over and over. maybe im just a nut because not that long ago i loved materia more then anything ill change my mind next week haha. thanks for posting

I don't think you're carzy but:

Imo, Materia system is better than Junctioning. It's much simpler and all you really have to do is decide which materia you want to level and fight, end. None of the materia are useless unless you're using them wrong. I admit there are some I didn't really bother with like "steal as well" but that's about it, everything is there when you need it. You have much more freedom with materia and you can literally kick everything's ass by hardly doing anything if you use the right combinations. Besides leveling for bragging rights You probably had too many materia because you didn't plan out what you wanted to level. Otherwise you end up blindly rotating through the same types of materia and end up with too many you don't use. Also, getting all the materia is rewarding especially the blue support materia, so if you're missing any that could be a problem.

Junctioning was so unorganized because everything depends on the amount of magic you have. You're obligated to draw everything along the way, even if it's shit magic like "sleep" because it may raise a stat that you need when junctioned. I remember, the first time I played through, I had a hard time deciding what to change when I got stuck at the boss at Lunatic Pandora because there really wasn't much I could do, so I sat there playing with different magic combinations that didn't really help any. If anything I think I may have been under leveled. Anyway, even though there's some things I do like about it, overall junctioning is messy.

I don't think you're crazy not in the slightest, i found junctioning i lot easier to understand but i can't verify why i do.. i think maybe because i played 8 loads of times and then played 7 when i was younger so i probably just got used to it playing it at such a young age.

While VIII is my favourite and I like the Junction system, it has its flaws. I for one don't like how when you use the junctioned magic, that stat will go down. Then you have to draw the magic again, which is either done by draw point or setting aside a turn in battle.

Materia has its flaws too, such as the unholy amount of leftovers you have when you master others. You can sell it, but that takes up time and is an annoyance.

But while this topic is about which one was better than the other, I feel that I cannot make that comparison. They are two different systems, and are not hugely similar.

yeah the whole drawin magic thing has always driven me crazy for reasons i mentioned in another thread but the materia thing i had issue with was like you said i set out to master as many different materia as i could and i just ended up with way too much crap i honestly didnt need and not being able to use certain weapons like the ultimate weapons for no growth was a bummer because i always feel like i should have as much materia growing at all times that is possible. oh and another thing im obviously not too fond of is using periods and structuring my sentences properly haha sorry guys but thanks for all the great replys everyone postin on this site has been real nice and thats underated these days haha

Well the only problem I have with the Junction system is this, you can only have 4 status defenses but also you can't wear accessories to protect you aginst others, however the way that you can junction elements to attack and defense is great where as in 7 you have to use a linked materia slot for each element you want to attack with or be protected against, a double edged sword I like both systems anyway I don't understand why people can hate one maybe they should have preferences but to hate one I think is slightly too stronger word.
