Aliens in FFVIII

While I was without a computer, I decided to start a new game of Final Fantasy VIII. Now, what I do to level up the characters is take a lap around the whole area before going to the town etc. to advance the story.

I think I was at the Mandy Beach, and then once in the plains somewhere. I encountered a battle, you know how you do. And then when the battle started, there was no one there to fight against. A few seconds later, this space ship comes by, it just scrolls across the screen. I try to attack it, but all it shows is the party characters.

What is this all mean? Were there any actual aliens helping with the production of the game? Do the spaceships lead to something, or someone? Help me out if you can.

It's actually a sidequest called UFO sightings, there are total of four UFO's to spot, after that you can battle one, which leads you to PuPu, a friendly monster asking certain amount of Elixirs after which he gives you his card. UFO's can be seen at these spots:

- Mandy Beach

- Winhill Bluffs

- Kashkabald Desert

- Heath Peninsula
